i think it's natural for there to be a deep cleave between
those who under-react, and those who overreact. in short
supply will be those who strike an appropriate balance

If it's real then the US was unprepared and Trump is an
idiot, but of course that can't be true so it isn't real.

it's similar to climate change. If anthropogenic climate
change is real, then we have to change our ways, but we
shouldn't have to change our ways so it isn't real.

I guess its felt like a weird cult of personality
surrounding Trump for a while now but its never been so
apparent from the mega backflip he has done on Corona, from
democratic hoax to paraphrasing "nobody could have foreseen
this"

protection against getting ill, we all need to modify our

it's left the nutters a bit flat footed, I was checking out
Infowars earlier and the articles and comments are torn
between hoax and bioweapon. They can't make a coherent
narrative out of it because of Trump's pivot.

I'm guessing eventually it will settle into "they tricked
Trump into saying it was a hoax, to make him look bad"

there is so much nonsense flying about. in the US,
representing the unicorn camp, trump buried his head in the
sand for months on the issue, burning time that could have
been used to prepare testing, supplies, whatever. now that
he's finally acknowledging it, testing has finally,
eventually, begun to sort of ramp up. big surprise, we are
now discovering many more cases... but, on the chicken
little side, i want to slap twitter for the number of chart
wizard posts, are you factoring in the sudden increase in
testing or just using the sudden increase in testing to make
something people will flip over and retweet

yes, this is it. trump has become part of their self, their
identity, and it'd be easier for them to deny their arm
existed. there have been so many shitty things done because
of trump -- racism, human rights, financial fraud, election
meddling -- and all because people really care about guns
and abortion and jesus. never mind that jesus would be
against all of this, we get to control the ladyparts and
shoot guns... short of a massive dose of DMT or something,
i'm not sure any of them could find their way over to the
other side short of a stay in a mental hospital

I still believe this virus is pretty mild, compared to the
flu.
A few stats from germany: In 2017/2018 25.000 people died of
the flu, 18 Millions were infected in germany.
I have my doubts about the dangers of this new virus. It
seems, only old people die from it. People are overracting

Japan has only 892 coronavirus infected people. Usually
people in Japan wear face masks. But hey, sure we could wear

make everyone stay home so we can ruin our economy?

I don’t want to debate this really and u never respond to
me but ill let my uninformed thought out here: those
countries with low infection rates taking extreme measures,
do so as to not get to the point that countries with high
transmissions have. It's an especially good idea for
developing countries to do this, since they don't have the
infrastructure to deal should things get worse (even
developed countries that have been hit hard don't have
adequate infrastructure). I don’t think infection rates
are a good indicator for WHEN to shut down the country.
Rather do it now than later.

Again, no expert here, but the common flu had a whole 365
days to reach its record numbers in 2018. Covid 19 only been
around for a few months now. In the interest of objectivity,
I suggest you hold that opinion for when the year is over.

And what are you complaining about? Not like you leave the
house anyway.

i appreciate monoids and portnoys recent posts,
for i am torn a bit between what measures seem to be
appropiate/neccessary. maybe rethinking it helps to shed
some light on it.
from my previous posts you see, that i believe a temporary
quarantine to flatten the curve and prepare for changes in
everyday life is important.
by now i do fear about the economic and social changes
aswell.
if we lose small busineses and privately owned restaurants,
artists what we will be left may be a corporate world or
global recession, loss of public funding, health insurance
qualities.
of course i neither want to lose my mum and her partner
and dont want to take any risks on the latter,
but there has to be a way to continue normal life soon too.

to the flu/covid comparison:
its true that by now the past years flus seem ahead in the
death toll.
we lost 25.000 elders last year and compared to corona
nobody cared. why is that so? and why is it different with
corona?
from as far as i can recall many elders seem to die of
pneunomia.
lets have a look:
344.000 heart/circulatory system
227.600 cancer
86.400 respiratory system (including the flu i guess?)

sourcelink: cause of death toplist germany

so its no. 3.
i took that as a sign that our health system is that good
that peoples hearts, brains and other vital organs last that
long, one of the only things left to kill you is a
flu/pneumonia because you cant keep up a good immune system
forever. especially if youre not able to move around any
more.

so why make all the fuss about it?
elders dieing anyway, right?
BECAUSE IT IS THE RIGHT THING TO DO.

now i did wonder why the governments now all of a sudden do
care about the elders.
my guess is that they did the numbers and (opposed to the
climate change sadly) figured out, that taking measures will
cost them less.

have absolutely no problem with lockdown. I could stay in
my house without internet for the rest of my life, and not

same here. i used to refuse office jobs entirely in favor of
remote work, until a brush with poverty changed my tune.
then i've bitched extensively on here about how much i hate
the train; my commute.

i can typically count on my mum for blunt assessments. if,
say, i was getting a bit fat, and i admitted it to most
people, they'd be all "oh, no, you're fine! you're skinny!"
whereas mum would simply say, "yes, you're getting quite
fat, are you eating too much frozen stuff?" and then proceed
to pester me about it every time i speak to her until the
issue is addressed. while there's a debate to be had about
how this effected my childhood development, as an adult, i
appreciate her unflinchingly blunt assessments.

one came a few months back: the company got bought out, and
there was talk the office might close down and make everyone
remote. i said, "that would be great, it'd would save me a
bunch of money and i wouldn't have to take the train
anymore, and i'd have more time, and..."

then she cuts me off: "ohhhh, no. i hope not. you seem much
better since you're around people more."

aaand, fuck, she's totally right.

so, i feel great on lockdown; perhaps you do too. but that
doesn't mean it's completely healthy and fine

oh, ditto. as a master-class homebody i work out in my

walking to replace the cardio walking to and from train
stations would give me. but not everyone is this way, and
gyms shutting down actually makes me worry about some of my

and, yes, my job. my sector is not immediately impacted by
the virus shutdown, but it will be soon enough. it's
something everyone needs, but, if shit is crazy, people will
wait on buying for up to a few months. it's a publicly
