while i understand the motive of closing all the colleges, i
see driveways overflowing with cars and yeah people will
promptly drive, fly all over for this. damned if you do,
damned if you don't. seems like it's creating real havoc for
students

ouch

“They are desperate,” said Ellen Olsen, who has been
a nanny for more than 11 years and co-manages a Facebook
group that connects parents, nannies and sitters in
Maryland. “We’ve seen a lot of parents posting, ‘Hey,
schools are closed, but I still have to work.’"

“One pastor said half of his church is ready to lick the
floor, to prove there’s no actual virus,” said King,
lead pastor at Second Baptist church in Conway, Ark.

[...]

“In your more politically conservative regions, closing is
not interpreted as caring for you. It’s interpreted as
liberalism, or buying into the hype,” said King, whose
church draws about 1,100 worshipers on a typical Sunday.

bye bye

i don't usually pay too much attention to the markets, but i
have to admit, marketwatch has been fascinating as of
late. if you click over to "futures," you'll note a straight
drop followed by flatline. they limit it to about a 5% loss
before they shut it off to "reduce investor panic" or
something. but, yes, perhaps it will reverse overnight...
but, get ready for the DJIA to plunge 1000pts on opening;
likely keep going. lowering interest rates, as much as trump
loves the headline, is really just to keep a domino effect
in liquidity.... or, at least, that's as far as i understand
it

All shops and restaurants, clubs, cafes etc shut form today
here and at least until the 19th of April. Only certain
shops for food will be open. No cinemas no gatherings, and
over 65s to stay at home. A week ago the country was so
chill and now I feel this tension whenever I go out. Guy
started raging at a guy at the supermarket because he
coughed without covering himself. No TP, no rice or pasta,
eggs and meat. Yet shops, distributors and the government
have made t clear not to panic buy as there will be enough
for everyone. McDonald’s only serve through a little
window and people have to wait outside, not even being
allowed to sit down at the tables outside. Starting to feel
like we’re in a film.

the train system just cheerily announced everything will run
on a "reduced schedule in the interest of health and
safety." this, i suspect, is bullshit. the train was
contracted out to a private conglomerate who has, at every
turn, attempted to squeeze more $$ out of passengers, and
now they are seeing a vast reduction in ticket fares and are
simply reducing trains to reduce their losses. the trains
were pretty empty last week, and, well, that was a relief,
not being jammed together like usual. anyone still stuck
taking the train will probably jammed together because
they've cut service in half. in the interest of health and
safety

counting my blessings that i can work from home.

My office has just announced it's shutting as of now and for
everyone to work from home. There is a suspected case here
and of course it was the cunt that sits behind me. He's off
and apparently has called to say friendsof his have it. The
Chinese girl that sits in front of him is furious, which is
kind of funny. Oh well. As long as there's booze in the
house... They say it gets darkest before dawn. Which is a
fallacy.

yes, dipped out to the store again and shelves seemed
increasingly empty. the TP/paper towels section was cleared
the fuck out, as was a lot of the canned-goods section. the
freezer section was more haphazard: a lonely five boxes of
hotpockets, the kinds people wanted least, next to a vast
selection of stouffer's frozen whatever. i wager they got a
delivery of that next morning; i'll check again tomorrow and
see what the shifts are.

meanwhile, the community center around the corner apparently
decided "never mind, fuck it" and their parking lot is
populated with cars, again. less than usual, but still. i
hadn't really thought about it before, but i guess people
work there and they can't really work from home
