i don't know about deez chineez but i was convinced i was
being tailed home by teams of orthodox jews once. it was
really weird, they were doing front-and-follow shit like in
the wire... paranoia kicked in and i got lost trying to
shake them, was walking for hours. i was on a lot of drugs
though (natch). maybe umbro knows what the fuck was going
on, cos i don't

jews: im confus

i had a similar moment today, then laughed at myself for
getting caught up in it all. when umbro is all "25 people
dead already, jeezus" i am wondering if he is serious or
not. according to wikipedia, typhoid fever killed 150k
people in 2015 -- down from 181k in 1990.

i am about as scared of coronovirus as i am slamming my toe
into a doorframe in the dark: i don't want it, it will be
unpleasant, but in the grand scheme of things it's pretty
irrelevant

not to trivialize 25 deaths, just feel a real disconnect
between panic over this and century-old illnesses that kill
thousands on a daily basis

Anyone who mocks the virus is going to die from the virus.

(don't blame me, I don't make the rules of irony, I just
enforce them)

"Sometimes man advances so quickly that the wilderness
reappears behind him. The forest has only bent underneath
his feet; as soon as he has passed, it recovers. It is not
rare, when passing through the new states of the West, to
encounter abandoned dwellings in the middle of the woods;
often one discovers the debris of a hut in the deepest
solitude, and one is astonished to come across partial
clearings which attest at once to human power and human
inconstancy. The ancient forest is not slow to push up new
shoots among the abandoned fields, over the day-old ruins;
animals retake possession of their empire: laughing, nature
comes to cover over the vestiges of man with green branches
and flowers, and hastens to make his ephemeral traces
disappear."

Dr. Paul Offit, a pediatric infectious disease expert at
the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of
Pennsylvania, said that when someone on a plane is found to
have influenza, fellow passengers are not quarantined.
"We don't do this for the flu, and it's known to cause
30,000 deaths in the US every year," he said.

Schaffner, however, said that this virus is different from
the flu, because there are so many unknowns about how easily
it spreads. In addition, even though it appears unwarranted,
there is more public anxiety about the Wuhan coronavirus
than about the flu.

"This virus is new, mysterious, strange, and from over there
in some exotic place," he said. "The psychology here is very
different."

i do have significantly complex feelings on this. 2009-13
was probably my best run, musically. i was work-from-home
consulting and able to put around four days a week into
music. i'd already amassed a decent amount of gear from
previous jobs, and promptly tried really, really hard. i put
every spare cent i had into it, not so much purchasing gear,
but working on music on spec instead of work i was being
paid hourly for. then my obsession with music was in no
small part responsible for the end of a five-year
relationship, and i no longer had anyone to split rent with,
in addition to being an emotional wreck for months. because
of being an emotional wreck, well, i didn't exactly melt
down at work, but i definitely did a lot less well, and they
eventually decided they didn't need me anymore. so then i'm
out a job, too. then my dad begins dying of cancer. i manage
to find a really cush gig, working at home while living for
next to nothing in cape cod, and, promptly, my dad gets
worse, and by the time that ends he's gone and i'm a mess
again. two years of moving from place to place, getting
evicted, because i'm having trouble finding a proper job and
uber doesn't particularly pay the bills. and i'm gutted over
my dad. still am. i still manage to put out a bunch of stuff
via tracker, mostly for myself, but i was hoping to get a
bit more attention for that level of effort. didn't happen

i've been in my current place for about a year, now, solid
salary job for about a year and a half, and i've paid off my
credit cards, some friends, mostly just filling out the last
few $k in back taxes at this point. my commute is shit, but
the people at work are nice and they depend on me and that
is actually reasonable motivation.

it's tiring, long hours, and i don't have much time for
music. that bothers me. i've managed to buy some gear again,
but with stabbing panic, i think: i'm never going to do that
to myself again. my life has to be squared up before i can
fap around on my synths all day

anyways, i will always be writing music, but i feel like the
whole "i'm an artist and i put everything into it" is a
childish denial of economic reality. you can put everything
into it, as long as that everything includes paying the
bills, saving a bit... because, if it doesn't, eventually,
you will be fucked and worried about sleeping in your car

yeah i'm just funnin ya man. it's only because of
circumstance that i'm not sucking the corporate peenur.
though if i wasn't locked down (ish) i'd be working on music
and art all day long... it's just that i'm paying out about
1/4 of my minimal benefits to store all my worldly
possessions. books, chairs, stereo, pc, cds, vinyl etc. the
situation doesn't leave enough for a laptop and therefore
i'm just a consumer not a producer. hoping to swing it the
other way asap. fuck a job, nobody in their right mind would
cut me a paid dealie anyway

i'm hoping to volunteer for the rspca or cats protection
league soon but you have to keep it under 16 hour per week
if yr claiming benefits. once i'm under a treatment order in
the community i'll be getting a lot more cash so i'll be
able to get back into all the creative shit but i don't
romanticize the starving artist thingi. i still want to have
something to do so i don't forget how to interactwith other
humans. and cats

yes, i think this is a valid point. to work on music you
need a certain minimum of equipment, a place to keep it all,
time, and other things like food and weed. these things all
cost money, and if you fall behind on it, it rapidly
cascades. rent is due and you have to sell off gear. you
can't pay rent and now you have to find a new place to live,
and scramble for money, leaving you with no time for music.
i have this vague suspicion that, over the centuries, music
was something you did holed up at winter, when there was
nothing else to do. but, the other seasons, lots of
work preparing for winter

making tunes has a definite momentum to it. three hours of
focused music time is not the same as three separate
one-hour sessions. working on music every day, it builds.
waiting until the weekend, less so. but it all gets flushed
down the toilet if the bills aren't paid.

so, tactically -- doesn't it make more sense to stick it
out, write a bit here and there, try to arrange proper
amounts of time down the road, that will be paid for in
full?

but, yes, still sneaking into the studio regularly anyways
