my guess is, about 50 for watmm and zilty combined, and most
of those at zilty (more europeans). ->15/35, watmm/xlt? (not
counting double buys)
by the time the mostly american watmm woke up, the limited
editions were already sold out.

overall i think the tracks are way too short
they just reworked some parts of their liveset
and made them in too small tracks

what i always loved about autechre is that they have really
long tracks continually evolving. With these tracks they
stay the same a long time and there is not that much
happening wich is much different then their last three
albums

but its the best IDM available at the moment :-

Yeah. The fact that you know they won't go anywhere makes
them feel strangely repetitive, even though it's one of Ae's
less repetitive albums. Like, even though a track like
"Cipater" contains a lot of repetition, it makes for an
intense, amazing listen because it always feels like it's
going somewhere. Unlike many of the pieces on the new musics
release of Awtechre.

Apart from "Simmm", this is really rather fucking
disappointing overall. I was just listening to "The Plc"; so
there's a simple drum loop, some synth noodling, and then it
just shifts into glitch-jam mode, and ends with those
voices, leaving me feeling like I'd seen a big alcoholic
white chocolate cake only to realise it was made of white
pigeon shit as I moved closer to it.

offline Gwely Mernans from 23rd century entertainment (Canada) on 2008-02-03 19:37 [#02171427]

What a disappointment. If anything, this new album makes you
appreciate those tracks off their earlier albums you never
cared for.

Autechre aren't breaking any new grounds, they're lowering
our standards. That's right. That's goddamn fucking right.

The best track on this album is only up to par with a track
off another that I found least appealing on that release.

This is such a joke. Untilted never really hit me, but at
least it had some tangible substance that could grow on you.
I hear none of that on this and I'll have none of you saying
"oh just give it time." I know straight off if an album
needs time to grow.

And what's with the last two tracks? Usually they go out
with a bang (lentic, reniform, sublimit), and if they don't
go out with a bang, it's more of a nice calm ~fin~ feel.

The ending of Quarishit was a track as dismal and empty as
the thought they put into releasing this crap.

Sick of being polite about it, beating around the bush,
hating the tracks most others hate, loving the tracks most
others love. I think I might maybe possibly could like a few
tracks on this.

Fuck.

it's just a load of cocks out rave-o-ution jam's. A
tetrapleb with palsy could make an IDM album with higher
mana points by just repeatedly smashing his face on a
typewriter and whistling. Sean and Bob has clearly spent too
much time downloading horizon on bit torrent this time
around. modern music has advanced to 30 seconds to midnight
on the doomsday clock.

Complete agreement with Gwely Mernans. I'm usually a watmm
poster but I think the response here to Ae's latest turd has
been much freer from blind fanboyism. I don't like bashing
or dwelling on things I don't like, but really, when you
consider Ae's sterling track record, this is quite a
disappointment. The production is superb, and as Rob said in
the interview they've filled up the crevices with some nice
sloshy liquidy sounds and metallic groans and the like. But
there is very little music to be had. I've listened to it
probably 10 times but I honestly have no desire to listen to
it further. For me the standout tracks are Tankakern and
Notwo, but I still don't think I'd put either on an Ae "best
of" comp. I don't think Notwo is better than vletrmx21 as
some are saying.

So I didnt quite think Untilted was excellent. I think
Quaristice is a better album, but I think Untilted is better
in terms of song for song. Whatever that means. Anyways, I
think they could do WAY more than what they left off for
after Draft. Unfortunately, the quality of the albums seems
to have decreased as their love for Elektron has increased.
Take it for what it is worth. Regardless, Quaristice is
good, but I am certain they could do better.

For those who think it is wank dog shit, could your best be
better than their worst? Still doubt it... Needless to
say, Autechre's piss takes are lightyears beyond most
people's most dedicated effort. To be fair though, that
doesnt mean a "get out jail free card" though. I'd still
appreciate if they stepped up their game a bit.

Yeah, yeah.. it's for them and their process. I get it. If
that is the case though, why even release an album then?

If you announce a tour WITH an album or you announce a tour
WITH OUT an album, people are still going to go.

Once you release an album, you withgo a certain amount of
ownership.. Those songs that meant something to you, whether
it be the immediacy of process or your loving a certain
piece of gear, will certainly mean something different to
everyone else once they acquire them.

Post-structuralism.

Fact.

What I mean is, it may mean shit tons to the author, but it
becomes public its meaning changes.

I think the criticisms of the fans are valid because I feel
they are taking a non-objective and anthropological approach
to their catalogue, that they may be unwilling to pay
attention to.

Quaristice works real well on its own. In terms of their
catalogue, if their releases are supposed to be "judged"
hierarchially or cumulatively (which may be an internet
influenced tendency to look at things), this album is
inferior in some ways.

Altibzz - a track any one of us can make with a decent free
vsti.

The Plc - cygnus and futureimage collaborating for 10
minutes. worthy of being a fake leak.

IO - dying, realizing there is a hell, and one of the most
popular tortures is hearing this retarded melody that was
the lowlight of the untilted set for 1000 years. at least
once the melody was gone it was an interesting listen.

plyPhon - if made into something longer with a few shifts,
we'de be looking at a full track.

Perlence - plyPhon with a shitty melody.

SonDEremawe - what the fuck is this? sounds like the ending
of a song which lingers on and eventually dies.

Simmm - great beginning, great ending, annoying middle.

paralel Suns - any unsigned ambient artist could have done
this, they probably wouldn't even get a response back from
the demo they sent.

Steels - Pro Radii's fetus, listen, you can hear Mama
Radii's heartbeat. one word, it rhymes with abortion.

Tankakern - fantastic track.

Rale - simplistic beat with complex fx. heavy pounding
track.

Fol3 - One of Richard Devine's roboturbations that never
made it onto his discography because it was too windy.

fwzE - Fair bit of work went into the spacing of beats,
acceptable as filler.

90101-5l-l - great track.

bnc Castl - annoying garbage. a joke that you don't laugh
at. mucous plaque shat out in 2 minutes after a strong
laxative.

Theswere - decent melody, nice sounds and a toilet bowl
beat. enjoyable mood but nothing special. I started to hear
this awesome sound in it, only to realize it was my chair
creaking.

WNSN - awesome. so awesome.

chenc9 - promising start, only to lose it's zest and linger
with one of the untilted set's flaccid, lethargic
transitional moments. but wait, is that other track going to
come in?! nope.

Notwo - deep moody piece, but like Altibzz, a track any one
can make with a free vsti.

Outh9X - eerie mood, nothing special. Codec Scovill made
this, then deleted it and replaced it with something much
bet

I think people just need to face the facts. Autechre peaked
with Confield (or maybe Gantz Graf, that epic outro on
cap.iv could be their top point).

Everything since then has been good but nothing
close to Confield. Even Draft, which started this more
"playful" trend in their music, which is an album I love to
death, was a big step down from the promise of Confield.

I personally like Quaristice a LOT more than Untilted, but
then again I didn't have my hopes up so high. Really,
there's something to like on every track...

Those of you who are letting yourself get angry at this
album-- well, you can always go back and listen to Confield.
That is one album that will never age. It will never sound
dated. It will always be there for you. And since you've
already heard it, you can't overhype the shit out of it in
your mind and be disappointed like you are with Quaristice.

untilted is their most difficult album, of all their
albums.
i dont think it is playful at all.. it sounds very distant..
quaristice is 1030328932x more playful.
but id rather have them make a new untilted than
quaristice.. quari has less autechreness and more 'idm' and
personally i didnt see ae as so much idm.. they had a
completely different method.

im not sure what happened, but all the epics are gone, that
special feeling of innovation and 'depth', its mostly all
gone..
it was around chiastic slide/lp5 they started to lean
towards the confield/draft era, and then now they wildly
changed and went back into some mix of early 90s with modern
production, it sort of lacks the stuff i loved in later
albums.

my question is.. why? this /could/ have been the album where
they accumulated everything into one epic, instead its like
in places its like they didnt even make it (bnc castl ;p)
