It sounds like a bunch of short glitchy jams in an Autechre
style. Nothing that special, but not crap either. If it had
been released by anybody else nobody would bat an eyelid,
but then again, it's not bad.

I think we can blame the mediocrity of this album squarely
on the MACHINEDRUM. There I sad it.

On laziness, laziness! But once one is an Intelligent
TechnoDance god, there is no need to push towards something
Great, because you are established. It's all in the name.

I like what I hear from 2 listens so far. Not analyzing the
hell out of until I get my limited edition set in the mail.
Then I'm going to lock myself in my room, copious amounts of
baby oil in easy reach, and I swear to the god I don't
believe in that if my girlfriend comes home early . . . .
well, fuck, I guess she'll probably leave me.

Can't form an opinion on the album as a whole right now, but
some of the more subdued tracks are among my favorite AE
joints yet. A few clunkers gum up the works though.

Kind of a weird experience with all these bite-sized tunes.
Some of them fail to make any impression or establish an
identity at all. Even my least favorite AE tracks from yore
all had their own individual 'tudes and made an impact,
played a role, even though it was sometimes as villain or
mere foil. Lots of Quaristice is just like, hey I'm gonna
bloopedybleep for 120 seconds then I'm outta here, c ya.

yep, there's something in that statement! (mduw & mnm +
laziness and getting caught in the routine of working like
you're used to)

the use of the same two pieces of gear will eventually lead
to reaching the point were things start to sound the same
and stop evolving.... no matter how fun it is to operate -
it gets too easy and all mduw and mnm-sketches aren't that
interesting as new music...

and of course you will get bored of being constantly at the
forefront of electronic music, and being supposed to bring
new and innovative stuff to the table everytime... To make
new and s t i l l listenable music isn't easy. They have
worked with every piece of gear you can do stuff with and
reached..... (what?)

(ae spoiled us for years with deep stuff, so these flat
sketches doesn't work as the older ae-tracks... I don't
really know what to think of this album yet, there's both
good and boring tracks - but there's a lack of deep epic
stuff that's well produced like "Ipacial Section", "Reniform
Puls" and "Cichli" to name just a few classic tracks... I
ordered the vinyl and limited edition, it's going to be very
interesting to hear the CD2-stuff...)

but hey, there's nothing wrong with the old masters reaching
their limits - the field is open for fresh new ideas! And as
I mentioned - to make new and s t i l l listenable, "good"
music* isn't easy...

(*= music that's more than pointless experiments and
sketches)

"the use of the same two pieces of gear will eventually
lead
to reaching the point were things start to sound the same

I dont get that at all? As if they only use two pieces of
gear? Why are people so hung up on the TOOLS they use
anyway? If it's so lazy and easy to reverse engineer why
don't you do it yourself?

offline avart from nomo' on 2008-02-02 04:32 [#02170747]
Points: 1764 Status: Lurker | Followup to Exaph: #02170745

I'm not hung up, but different tools leads to different
sounds & results.
No point in reverse engineering something that's already
been done and I didn't say making interesting music was
easy. That's nearly everyones problem and therefore no
surprise that even ae can't no longer surpass ae....

hahahah there's Some strange verdicts coming in eh....
Myself, I'm loving this album more and more every time I
hear it, its got tons to dig into, variety of
moods/spaces/emotions...deep trax, fun trax, the beatless
tracks are up there with the best i reckon, Notwo kills
me..
dunno why everyones so obsessed with the kit they've
used...its what comes out of the speakers and into your
brain that matters isnt it? the recording /production is
amazing...tuff, warm, heavy...lush... so much space
it's only ever gonna be as interesting to you as you are in
turn interested in it I suppose....is everyone looking
forward to the live sets?

I am indeed! Seeing them on March 4th London. Hope it's as
brilliant as the three times I saw them during their
Untilted tour... (actually, the Glade performance was pretty
bad, but that had nothing to do with them and everything to
do with the stupidly low volume they were being played at
due to some silly law. The other two were ace.)

it sucks. absolutely stagnant tracks. To get an idea what
makes music good, compare the first track (I will avoid
humiliating autechre and not say the name) to a
superficially similar track, the first track of crunch 1.

The thing I like about IDM are the 18 steps you take to hear
it:

First Listen: I think this is good, but most parts sound
difficult, random, I don't get it.
Second Listen: Ahh ok, I get track three, there's a snare on
the 3rd and the 21st.
Third listen: Shit this shit is some dark shit.
Fourth listen: Hold on this is actually really quite
simplistic, and I hate the tracks I initially liked.
Fifth listen: Spots one standout track previously completely
unheard.
Sixth track: Plays in its entirety without any new
discoveries.
Seventh listen: Massive epiphony, reasses whole album
Eighth to Eleventh listen: Plays selected favourite tracks
in isolation.
Twelth listen: Hears some detail in the background of track
14
Thirteeth listen: Hears background details in tracks 7, 9,
12, 13, 16, 20
Fourteenth listen: Hears whole structure to album, conjurs
images of wet robots fighting on planets etc
Fifteenth listen: Gets sick of it a third of the way through
and puts on earlier work by same artist
Sixteenth listen: Plays to mate who instantly says its shit
and causes grave doubts in original listeners heart
Seventeenth listen: Maybe it is shit
Eighteenth listen: New Clark out tomorrow
