Quaristice: Your Verdict?

I guess I really need a machine drum then

i agree some of the tracks should be longer especially Simmm
which could easily be an 8 minute track. and i dont mean to
imply that anyone could jump on a machinedrum and sound like
autechre. their music cannot be reduced to tools, but i
guess by talking about the tools a lot makes me come off
that way.

No, it's true though. This might be a really good
advertisement for the product.

Simmm is awesome how it is, I think. I do admit that one
great thing about Autechre on previous records was that
their tracks had TIME and space to run their course.
Surripere... etc. Untilted, which I'm now even more starting
to believe to be a masterpiece with the release of this
album, also nailed in the importance of long track lengths
with these guys.

I have been listening to Quaristice nonstop for the past
week or so now. Thinking about Surripere just made me
realize that I really need to lay back and run through
Draft. Always enjoyable.

yes Surripere, Sublimit, Ipacial Section and Nuane are
probably 4 of my favorite AE tracks, mostly because of their
epic evovling quality

i agree with you. it seems to me they are through with
tracks about sound wankery and are trying to just write some
raw, solid, even accessible music. but it still sounds like
the ae we are so enamored with.

i think the 'bonus' disc may answer that. that may contain
what everyone is looking for now.

makes me laugh that people were asking for beats and
melodies and now that they got them, they want different
ones in a different context. classic.

listenable stuff.

i'm never gonna like ae i think.

Yeah so, after listening to Quaristice for a long period of
time, I've come to the conclusion that I should just stfu
and enjoy what's there.
I got into this mindset of wanting long epic tracks, but
then I figured, there's plenty of those one their earlier
releases, why not give something else a chance?
I did like this album to begin with, but then something
changed in my mind, and that's not really fair towards
anyone.

Fact is, this is a completely different album, different
context and meaning.. I realize that now. And I must say
there are some really good tracks on there, and I would also
say this is a nice change of pace in the Autechre fanboy
world.

A new ae album always fucks me up, and this time was no
different - but this is ae - and I wouldn't expect anything
less :)

So yeah, it's a very warm and nice album, and a nice look
back on their whole career..

Even though I heard the WIRE leak only once, for some reason
I remember the tracks sounded better on that. A terrible
thing to say I know, maybe low qual let my mind fill in the
gaps and real fuzzy dubby stuff it was. I know all 20 will
leave their mark on me sooner or later, (:0\) but right now
it all just flows right past. Also, bnc Castl isn't nearly
as bad as you say it is, I actually prefer it to the first
cut.

Yeah, they do tweak them quite a lot, but the sound of them
is clearly the EFM machines on the MD. The Elektron MD has
this certain sound that you can't get anywhere else, it's
very distinctive, I love it.

I'd say every album that's been released recently has been a
grower. Strange that.

mm, the "distinctive sound" is quite interesting, tweak the
knobs off or use the presets - it sounds md whatever you do
anyway...

(though I still find the both elektronboxes interesting and
the company as a whole is really "lovable" - they know what
"support" means - but I can't get away from that "cornered"
feeling reagarding the sound. unlimited, yet the same mostly
anyhow....)

Sorry, the way I put that makes the MD sound limited. It
isn't at all, It's just got such an "upper-class" sound to
it that makes it so unique from any other drum synth, and
therefore distinctive. Also, the MD isn't just a drum synth,
you can use it as:

-a 16 track 3-note-poly-per-track MIDI sequencer using the
MIDI machines

-a very powerful audio processor. With the latest upgrade
(Master FX automation control) you can do all the Ableton
Live Beat Repeat stuff in hardware.

-a MIDI controller (use the MIDI machines and get Bomes
MIDI-Key translator and you have one powerful controller:
16x6 CC knobs and 16 buttons)

For around £800 (I got mine new for that), the MD SPS-1 is
definitely worth it. Add the UW option for another £300 and
you've got a powerful sample manipulator in your hands too.

CS2x: Robert Logan with a Machinedrum, now that's an album
I'd like to hear. :D

You are probably right. I like it a lot more now, though
there are still a good handful of tracks I will probably
never like that much because I don't feel like they reach
their full potential, but they were obviously made that way
for a reason I guess. ! :-) ! :-) ! :-) :-) ! ! :-)

'All of "IDM" is dead or dying. Confield and DrukQs were so

good that they killed it all. All your superstars are dying.

Take what little comes your way now and try and enjoy it,
and remember you still have all of the old albums to fall
back on and remember the good days. '

Sir, this is just depressing and not at all true imho. I'll
agree that those albums were high points, but let's just
enjoy things as they come and not look back, eh? "Electronic
music" is a relatively young genre, and there's life in it
yet. Lots of life, oozing with computerized sex.

there are some tracks that flow right into one another

like longer developing tracks but i love how refreshing this

this music witout a doubt has been designed to listen to

turned the lights off and listened to the whole thing in the
dark. i admit some of it frightend me, at times i felt
slightly anxious, but in a good way.

I agree. When I hear something that goes down as smooth as
this on headphones I always wonder if it was partly mixed on
headphones. Pure pleasure in the cans.
