"It sounds like a bunch of short glitchy jams in an Autechre

style. Nothing that special, but not crap either. If it had

been released by anybody else nobody would bat an eyelid,
but then again, it's not bad."

hmm, I guess it's the "nothing special"-thing is a bit new
for me when listening to ae...

There's an interview with ae in the march edition of the
wire - "nothing special" that too, just boring... (barcodes
& reverbmags are a lot better!)

I kind of take that back, it was a depressed initial drunken
reaction to the album, although I still definitely don't
think it's their best. I've got that Wire interview, but I
think there's more interesting stuff on the online ones.

Listening to Autechre records was getting difficult for a
bit back there but I just had this new chip embedded in my
brain which means weird, burrowing glitchy sounds,
random-factor time signatures and super-distorted speech
software now sound like 4/4 beats and big wobbly bass drops.
Thanks to this exciting new development I can now officially
reveal Quaristice to be No.1 Party Album of the Millennium!

anyone who isn't in love with this yet will be soon. i was
pretty sure that it was shit a few weeks ago and stopped
listening to it. i mean, it was alright, but I'd played it
too much and I wasn't finding anything appealing about it.
why waste my time on this when i still haven't even finished
discovering all the intricacies on Draft, Chiastic, and so
on.

Anyway, I put it on again and it blew my head open,
completely. I experienced the same mind blowing feeling I
had when I first "got" Confield. This happened to me about
3/4ths of the way through Simmm.

Anyway, Quaristice is a trip through a world made out of
audio, and it has decayed. It gets scarier and scarier and
lonelier, you are completely isolated when you get to
Steels, and then Fol3 rapes you and you have no one to call
for help.

Excuse the above drunken nonsense, I am actually now in love
with 'Quaristice' and I can't wait for the 3rd of March

Listening to 'Rale' reminds of the feeling I got when I
first listened to 'Chiastic Slide.' Beautiful.

and the enclosed note says:

Hi there, We've sent the rest of your order. The
Autechre 'Quaristice' Special Edition will be shipped to you
in time for it's release date of March 4th..

I'd really prefer them to do as they said they would (send
everything together for the 3rd of March) instead of making
me all excited on the first sight of the package at home.

It's hilarious. And his quote was disproved, too, because
Roland said he didn't actually make those particular presets
anyway.

It certainly feels very classic in some ways. You could
tell me that some of this stuff came out around
Chiastic/LP5/EP7 and I would probably believe you.

It just has a classic feel to it, compared to some of the
later stuff. It doesn't sound just like those records they
don't even sound just like each other. I am just saying
there is a certain vibe to this record that is familiar in a
way that period of autechre feels familiar.

The first time I heard Confield, Draft, Gantz and Untilted
it was a very new and different experience each time. They
were all somewhat challenging and took different levels of
getting used to. Hearing this record for the first couple
times feels instantly familiar.

I know I'm not totally off base on this because I've heard
others say similar things.

OK, so like I said, I got my parcel from warpmart today (I
guess the release date was more of a joke, huh?), and here's
my short first-listen review:

positive!

Throughout the 20 tracks on this album, there's a whole
variety of styles and moods, highs and lows, but I'm happy
to say it doesn't feel like a patched together random mix,
not at all. In fact, from the pleasantry of Altibzz to the
mellowing-down of the last two tracks there is a definite
sense of closure, if not exactly thematic development.

It works as an album, at least for me, and even the lesser
tracks are short enough not to disturb the experience of the
whole. But I expected to be disappointed by at least a
couple tracks (based on other reviews), but no, I enjoyed
every track to some extent. Sure, a couple of tracks left me
wanting for more, but hopefully this will be corrected by
the second CD of the limited edition.

So, what I like about this album is the variety and the
format. As to the format of 20 tracks being the idea behind
this album - this is precisely what I like, in fact: it
seems that Autechre needed to try something different after
a series of albums which seemed to settle too easily into
that 8 or 9 track format. This album is a kind of a system
purifier for them. Both the ambient tracks and some of the
"goofier" tracks here simply wouldn't work on a differently
conceptualized album. So we get something quite unique
here.

Highlights for me include Simmm, Theswere, WNSN, Chenc9 and
Outh9X.

While there's nothing quite as epic as LCC or Pen Expers or
even Eggshell here, there's enough for me to be really happy
with it after the first listen. Who knows how I'll feel
after a couple of weeks or months, but for now I'll say it's
a damn good release.
