Quaristice: Your Verdict?

well, im fucked in the head mate, i know.

but if you give steels a spin then listen to that ridiculous
bass drum that just randomly hits, and those totally random
sounds on top, tell me, what the fuck is that?

what the fuck kind of track is that compared to bine, uviol,
pen expers, surripere, or whatever the fuck ever you want.

i like the majority of this album, dont get me wrong, but
something is off the way i see it. im not denying in any way
that im just an idiot either, but at least i dont think this
is even near the same quality of earlier stuff.

on the other hand i feel tank, io, plc, notwo and a bunch of
others are great.
im not disappointed with the album per se, but its not as
serious or heavy or innovative as a whole.

but bnc castl and steels (at least beginning) are imo just
ridiculous.

Lupus, take your teabag out of glotch's kettle at once. He
has had more than enough caffeine before the bed-time.

Wait, they made albums after Draft?

I kid. I kid.

I guess I've grown to appreciate Untilted. It's funny
though, it seems like the conversations following the past
two albums have suggested they are coming off as a cover
band of themself. I'm not sure I agree, but it is
surprising these criticisms arose once they dramatically
changed their approach to how they were writing their music,
their tools, etc.

Back when Confield and Draft came out, it seemed the biggest
complaint was they were too abstract or too esoteric.
Nowadays, that sounds like a compliment to me. Whereas that
was an opinion put forth from our lack of knowledge
regarding what it was they were actually doing, it seems the
criticism in 2008 could actually be founded on experience
and fact.

i've got to correct my previous verdict:

quaristice = auditory orgy

i don't get why the general vibe surrounding this album
(albeit only one day after the digital release) is negative.
i'm abolutely digging the album so far.

in my opinion, it's not ae at their most innovative, but i
don't think they've ever been as creative within a single
release. the flow of the album works so well.

it's refreshing to listen to an album made up of short
tracks. for the most part, they are very direct and concise.
even though they don't last long, they're full of ideas and
keep changing constantly, as if ae was targeting an 'a.d.d.'
adience. unless you don't enjoy those two closing drone
tracks, there isn't a single element on the album that drags
on for too long.

and the fact that the tracks are so short is what makes this
album so effective; the tracks i like most, i can't get
enough of and want to listen to them as soon as they've
ended (kind of a 'roygbiv effect'). the ones i'm not liking
as much, well i don't have to skip them since they only last
a few minutes.

so far, my favorites are:

plyphon
perlence
steels
fol3
wnsn

least favorites:

sonderemawe
fwze
bnc castl

on top of that, there's still 68 minutes of 'new' material
to discover in only a month, that's just insane.

it's only been a month and already 2007 has been completely
assfucked by 2008.

if i rated every autechre release and judged it a day after
it came out and only listened to it a few times, then i'd be
a fan of shallow suckass pop music like britney, insync and
menudo.

plus, i love that these tracks came from improving whether
onstage or in the studio. thats what most bands do. they
jam, shit flows out and they turn it into a proper song.
this feels more human and organic than any realease before
because thats exactly what it is. it must have been very
refreshing for them to do what they always do but approach
it from an entirely new angle. i applaud that.

who's to say that this idea wasnt in place before the long
ass untilted tour. if that was the case, then they were
giving you a whole new insight to their process. in a sense,
you watched them create the skeleton of this record right
before your eyes night after night. what a fucking concept.

and not only do you get 20 tracks of a new record, you also
will get 11 more tracks which i am sure will be just as good
as this. so all in all, 31 tracks in my head after waiting
2.5 years? fuck me, i love it, well worth it .

At the beggining all Autechre's albums feel like a jam to
me, but I've learned to accept that. I'm sure that the
highly praised logic and fluidity that you hear in Confield
and Draft are just the effect of getting to know the album.
I don't think Autechre have ever been the masters of concept
albums or longer forms in general. I'm aware that I might be
the only one to think so, but I AM RIGHT!!!

Jeez, anyone remembers those clumsy transitions between
parts of tracks on Untilted? If they feel right and LOGICAL
to you,you really need some more jazz in your everyday diet.
They were just shorter tracks glued skillfully
together, maybe slightly modified in some aspects to better
suit one another.

And just to clarify, I'd never rate any post-Confield
release below 8/10. My preferences as to which one is the
best change, but Confield was simply the beginning of a
giant. What was before isn't worth more than the Analords to
me (at the beginning I wanted to use a comparison with
Clark, but that would be just wrong).

cx: After putting on the phones, I admit that Tankakern is
very very good.

Hmmmmm, closer listening helps to appretiate fol3 a bit.
Nothing can justify Steels though, it makes me feel more
blatantly cheated than the first half of LCC.

I'm sick of lighthearted, retro, acid, jokey, goofy, dancey
pus-ridden fuckrat tracks. There's enough, well, there's
99.9% of music for that. It's like these Intelligent Dancing
Music superstars are embarassed by the self-indulgent hyper
werid wonderments of 1999-2003. Squarepusher gave us "Hello
Everything", Aphex Twin went all acid and gave us "Analord",
BoC dived into the lands of ultra-tameness with TCH, and the
ever amazing Clark man went into straight up, fucking
majorly boring stomping rave territory.

None of which has anything to do with the new AE, which I
have not listened to enough of to say whether it is "retro",
or whatever pointless point I'm dribbling... etc.

It's time to convert to prog rock. Our men have become bored
being interesting and want to make simple analog acid wank.

i'm listening it now after reading about, can't say if its a
joke or not but its not my cup of tea, too. this album seems
quite ecleptic to my ears, simply i cannot describe with
words the moltitude of feelings i'm getting from it cos
they're pretty well mixed.. guess i'm just enjoying this
more than any stuff i've heard recently, people have
different views to see things but ya know, semplifying does
not automatically mean less good. i'm not good with words, i
think their music speak more than any.

My friends review:

"i dont get how people were so positive about it. there were
moments of such minimal whateverness.

like listen to steels. it sounds like a 20% complete song.
its dead. some bass in the background that doesnt do
anything. to me this one was one of the worst albums theyve
ever made i swear. that song sounds like it was shat out in
5 minutes.

Outh9X sounded like it could have become epic when that lush
air started coming from the background, but then the song
just went nowhere. there was like 3 minutes of nothing in
there.

WNSN was a bit catchy and more serious, but didnt do
anything special.

Notwo was just ambience but it sounded good.

chenc9 was like a mediocre tuss song.

bnc castl was catchy and could be good for like some
retarded skit, but it was still something that could shit
out in 2 minutes

Thewere was pretty good because it actually had some high
fidelity sounds and a catchy melody.

fwzE was more of that tweedly toodly woodly kiddy mood shit
which i dont like

rale was okay, but still kind of boring.

Tankekern had a cool atmosphere and was pretty good but it
was still too minimal. could have done more with it.

Steels was poop.

SonDEremawe was just whatever, short repetitive nothing.

plyPhon started sounding like it was gonna be awesome but
then just got all disjointed and whatever and didnt
progress.

IO started out like annoying discordant shit but the beats
for the last minute were good lol

i honestly think this album sounded way deader and more
minimal boring and disjointed than untilted

and i honestly cant comprehend these peoples positive
feedback. its like they must hear a completely different
song than i do, i dont even feel like im being super
critical"
