alright, i'm afraid i have another nerd gripe. but not about
electron framework; this one seems more at the core of why
windows is a steaming pile of horseshit.

open the start menu. start typing "check for updates."
click. find "advanced options," click. find the very tiny
unobvious thing buried in the resulting screen "privacy
settings." turn them off. in particular, though, "Let
windows track app launches to improve Start and search
results."

i read that, and i heard: let us send data about every app
you launch to microsoft to "improve results." so, sure, i
switch it off.

then i notice the history of the run menu is totally gone. i
have to retype everything in full, every time. i flick it
back, and the entire history comes back.

perhaps, this is nothing nefarious; it's only used
locally... but, no, it does feel like "either you send us
your shit or we'll break a convenience you depend upon
daily" and that feels 112% the microsoft way so i suspect it
is, in fact, nefarious.

lewis has become too much for me to cope with and he doesn't
call me anymore anyways, so i have been calling up other
people i haven't called in a while. one guy, known him for
years, perhaps even longer than lewis. hadn't seen him in a
while.

we're both super into music. he's had piano lessons and i
think might have even majored in music or something even i
dunno i should ask...

anyways, he DJs, but all he has for music gear is a volca
sample. so i say, bring that over, let's jam.

and wow. there was essentially zero discussion. we turned
the machines on and i started doing stuff and then he just
did stuff and i forget he's there, almost, whoops. and i
look over to see how he's doing. and he's left the volca
sample jabbering and he's off messing with the wavestation.
i think: this is great

later, at some point, he changes patches on the wavestation,
and... i did not consciously notice it at the time, but when
i played the recording back, whoa, holy shit. i can hear
exactly where he changed the patch, it's right there. and
then i can hear myself, not consciously aware of it, but
very, very clearly reacting to what he'd done. again,
lovely.

i was mostly driving; he's a good DJ but new to hardware
things. so i'd sort of dart out a warning or request here
and there -- like, hey, i'm going to do a thing here be
ready. or... i was trying to say, "that sample was great but
it's getting tiring could you mess with it i've no free
appendages with that much dexterity" but it came out like
"could you change that somehow it's getting a bit much" and
later we properly discussed it and he was like "i kinda thot
you meant changing the pitch on the sample" and i was
dfjgkldfjgd that was exactly what i wanted you to do.
if only he'd just trusted and gone for it. he quite may next
time

perhaps my favorite part, though, was once we'd kind of
warmed up a bit, we were actually doing music while
discussing doing music. i'm explaining what i'm doing with
delay this into that aux1 etc and he's asking questions

then i kind of looked at what i was doing, and said... "i
cannot believe i'm having a conversation while doing this"

still doing it

i think microsoft has effectively just gotten me kicked
off
twitter.

...

Logged into my @microsoft @windows PC only to be
assaulted by Microsoft Assistant; sign up for Microsoft
Account! Last time this happened I repeatedly mashed "Delay
updates for 7 days" until it was tapped. It still has a few
days left but this still happened. I hope whoever OK'd this
gets anal cancer

...

in any case, i attempted to log in tonight only to be
notified that Abusive Behavior and please enter your phone
number so we can start a timeout timer.

i've checked back every now and then, and, yep, it's still
like that. i'd actually kind of forgotten about it for a few
weeks, and just now, i decided to try again. maybe it's
enough of a timeout?

no, instead, fuck me, it's loads worse. i can't even get to
the login prompt anymore. it's "sign in with apple" and
"sign in with google" and then a tiny miniscule link to log
in like normal and it doesn't work. i gradually shut down
bunches of noscript and adblock but it's still not working.
i can only imagine how bad it would be now if i got to a
login screen

augh. i do need to somehow sort out how to get on there and
post a modest tweet with some contact info and sorry not
really be here no more

the apple thing recently is horrible: we are deploying a
mysterious, untested, unvetted, completely untransparant
thing to scan your phone for kiddie porn. i guess i would
cite, 3D, del naja, of massive attack fame -- coppers show
up saying his computer had downloaded kiddie porn. most
interesting to me was a list of what drugs he had in
stock... but, still, a horrendous violation of privacy upon
an extremely talented artist. in the end the charges were
dropped and the cops kind of lukewarmly apologized, as
apparently it was all horseshit and he'd done no such crime.
and if we don't like you, we can flag your iThing for
Algorithmic Raisins and have the cops show up at your door
and take all your computers. and if you're not a reasonably
famous musician with some testicular fortitude lord help u

so i tried disconnecting the google account from my fone.
everything exploded. half my contacts disappear. it
repeatedly spams me with warnings i cannot disable: your
data is not backed up

i'm not sure there's really any fixing it. but i'd
appreciate recommends for "just a music player" that has
bluetooth, hard requirement. a usb port, and perhaps even a
headphone jack. waterproof, strongly weighted, i'm out four
or five miles a day, rain or shine. but gruetoof work thru a
ziploc bag just fine. and fuck wifi don't care whatev

just, you know. leave my phone at home instead. i only want
the tunes, not the fone, so let's go back to a dedicated
device. the invasive horseshit is no longer worth the
convenience of the device convergence.

whatever it's in the mood for. it's like a squirrel
driving an eighteen-wheeler. is the squirrel driving the

the moment, and the terrain.

i care about an iterated process of self-improvement and
debugging that feeds back and accelerates until i've moved
from a trained weasel driving the eighteen-wheeler to a

i remember thinking, "at what point do i qualify as
bionic?" i was having a laugh at myself when i thought that,
but there is a guarded little pocket of excitement that, in
a year or two, it may not be a joke anymore.

or maybe i'll hit a wall and progress will stop. lots of
things going on in my noggin feel like that at the moment. i
squint my eyes and look down the road, and... whoa. could
that work? that's unreal. i really hope that works. if i
were evil, i'd definitely let loose the evil laugh i'm sure
i'd have down cold at this point

not bionic; not sean booth. have not perfected evil laugh
yet. took five years, more like. but the weasel trampoline
is working

i think in italic sometimes. or even bold. i
don't generally underline.

i had idea in high school: i should try to use bold and
italic HTML tags when i think! and i promptly found i
was able to do so.

in retrospect, what i was doing was hardcore laser focusing
on at the same time as totally rinsing
out the intonation that i wanted italic to be
connected to. gurning on the intonation while
focusing on

t was an idle hobby for boring classes and being stuck on
the train. it was to help me write silly stuff in HTML
better. but it became a habit. i really, i dunno, do
think... sigh

not using html tags. i, well, think the word in italic.

more interesting is when i am all: i make all the right
decisions alway^H^H usuall^H^H more often then i used to

and ^H^H is an old usenet joke that i've somehow co-opted to
edit something i'm about to write into my brain: no, wait,
stop! that's wrong

If I say something to myself in my head, and imagine I'm
typing it at the same time... well, best I can describe it
is a feeling of floating disconnected hands typing it.

I was tinkering around with it just now; thinking way too
hard about it -- thinking about things way too hard; my
favorite hobby.

It's specific enough that I said to myself... Wait, why did
I just go for the shift key, there? That's in the middle of
the sentence; it shouldn't be capitalized.

I realized that, if you read it aloud, the word I was trying
to capitalize had the strongest emphasis of Any word in the
sentence. oh! that's why. thanks brain

Utterly useless I suppose, but does delight me.

My next thot was: I need to pin down where these hands are,
a little better. It feels so vague. They're on either side
of my head. a bit below my temples. in line with my eyes.

My next thot was: It's like I'm viewing this from the
outside in, I wonder if I could find myself in there viewing
myself from the outside in viewing myself from the outside
in viewing myself self elf ffffffffff

Then I thought of that joke, hey, it's like disappearing up
your own butt, this third eye. I bet squarepusher is a
master

offline EpicMegatrax from Greatest Hits on 2021-09-10 04:41 [#02611717]
Points: 25264 Status: Regular

When it was vague -- where are these hands? -- I was
inside my head. The hand illusion felt like it was somewhere
up above; diffuse. rayleigh scattering the sunlight.

So I keep poking at it. I've never poked at this before

Then I'm outside my head; a camera behind me and rotated
clockwise/left a bit; looking at the back left of my head. I
type a bit, and, oh hey there it is, I see it now

Then I'm just sitting in a meditative pose in my farty attic
studio listening to leftfield after work because that was
novel enough that it broke my focus.

I tried to do it again just now, and, for a moment I was
actually stuck where I was before I tried to figure out
where they are. This is vague; they're somewhere. Where? But
I'd already seen where to poke before and soon enough felt
my way back there.

This time, I thought: Why back left of my head? And it's
more like shining a flashlight than it is a camera?

...and what if I try to do the other side? you know, the
back right? But for some reason I tried to shine it on the
front left, through the back right, and things were... I
dunno, oddly quiet. Alright, maybe this isn't going to
really doing anything. So I stop.

As soon as I stopped, however, my brain felt incredibly
strange for a few moments. Interesting. I think I might give
it a rest for tonight tho

I can feel the hands location, now, without going outside my
head, but i'll have to go back out to determine, like...
they're kinda shrunken down, half in my head, half out. I
can access the bits I've already seen but I have to go back
out there for the rest.

It's all an illusion generated by my brain wiring back into
itself and thank you for reading my bullshit thread.

i've always sang in the car or such, by myself; shy about
it. somewhere back in this thread is an entry from when i
was first, i suppose, properly singing. that i feel the
resonance of the note within me. deep, down there. high, up
in the forehed. from there it's kind of like playing
fretless bass; just learning to accurately jump from one
spot to another. i'm still not very good. but i feel like i
understand, somewhat.

trent reznor's songwriting paints with this so very well.
i'm on the fence about even trying to describe it. i'll just
cherry-pick, i suppose: why'd you have to leave. me. so
hiiiigh

why comes from the heart, you is down deep in the gut, have
is in the upper back, leave hits a whole range front of the
chest, me goes back down to the heart, high up in the
forehed. various methods of escape. i was just singing with
it, really, just for fun, and to practice, and i noticed it
actually seemed to have an order to it

"so" is slightly above the stomach

i suppose there is more on top of resonance. the way he
enunciates implies facial expressions. a mouth, a lip
curling up at "leave." let me get away, kind of a shrinking
motion, but also a feeling of drawing away.

he probably doesn't sit down and write like this. i figure
it's more letting emotion soak through the cheesecloth until
it works

or maybe the alien is just someone living a normal life, in
the simulation, with no knowledge they are in a simulation.
deliberately programmed. lead a full life not knowing you've
deliberately opted into this simulation. when you die, the
simulation terminates, and you wake up with a memory of a
full life on earth in the early 2020's.

i'm not sure i believe in a simulation. as a civilization
becomes technologically advanced, the amount of damage a
single individual can foment upon everyone increases
exponentially. what stops someone from using the replicator
in star trek to replicate a nuke? or, just, break it down
into components repeatedly, until you've nothing but benign
ingredients; assemble it on your own from there. probably
the example that haunts me the most is the cyclical plot of
12 Monkeys. it horrifies me. i think it's being used for
selfish fatcats in addition to the complete loss of free
will

anyways, presuming evolution has driven our existence, i'm
not sure most, if any civilizations will last long enough to
become capable of simulating Everything, because someone
will Ruin Everything before then
