man if your calling this music IDM to begin with, I don't even know why i'm argueing with you.
skodt - the Q guy has some good opinions, but when he started going off and trying to belittle us with his "name calling" and trying to front himself as richard devine he lost all of my respect to begin with.

WHAT ABOUT MIX CD'S? And I don't mean dj mixes. . . just cd's you make with a whole bunch of different artists and songs. I download all of that material.
And dj's don't have much to worry about, at least. It's quite awkward to go about downloading a dj mix, and I've never done it.
Ever since I got my cd burner last year in April I've only downloaded and burned 6 albums, and they're not all from the same artist or anything; they are ones that I cannot find on stores and cost way too much to buy online.
And occasionally I do burn dj mixes that I find at the library that I would not normally spend money on (Paul Oakenfold anyone?), but like I said, that's because I would never waste my hard-earned money on anything like that anyway.
Some dj's and artists, like John Digweed and Aphex Twin, I will never burn material from, although both are already very rich and do not even need income from cd's/dj mix cds anymore. . .

"man if your calling this music IDM to begin with, I don't even know why i'm argueing with you."
What do you mean? I was just saying that they don't have much Intelligent Dance Music (a popular term given to music such as Aphex Twin, Squarepusher, Bogdan Raczynski, and others).

Can't compare what John Digweed,Paul Oakenfold and the rest of the "Trance/extacy gang" does...They just spin music, that's it...When RDJ is Djing, then, that's another story,he does a bunch of his stuff, and friends like []pusher,AE,etc.....They're way different in what they do........

deathsmith: everyone makes mixed cds man. or tapes, whatever. don' t think it hurts things and that's the point. d/ling album's is what we are speaking of here. also, it doesn't matter how rich someone is, you treat them with as much respect as any individual.
narkotic: he did fall off the boat a little there, but as someone stated, if you back a dog into a corner it's gonna bite. most people weren't listening to the essence of his statement, and he kept trying, but after a bit he did get kind mangy.
most people would have responded in a like fashion. i think people understand now, it's too bad it had to come off as a quarrel though.

small labels are run for enthusiasts at litttle profit - majors are run by big corporations most small labels have 50 50 deals 50 for the artist 50 for the label so ...the drop in sales from cd burning /file sharing fucks wit h the small labels more - everyone is talking about the artists here but artists are supported by labels - and the guys who run the labels ain't multi million fat cats

I think this whole topic got blown way out of proportion! Downloading is good, because it gives people a chance to hear the music.
Routintely downloading things just because one doesn't want to purchase them, however, is a bit dishonest, but still not wrong.

as far as computers go, i'm not around them except at work, with video editing and checking e-mails. i don't claim to know a lot about them what i do know usaully makes them crash, repeatedly, ok they scare me alright, i'm like a monkey trying to use a toaster oven.
i will say that i do not download a lot of music of the net for the reasons some of you have been giving, it's illegal plain and simple. artists are already exploited by the record companies, now you the comsumer wants to shxt on his chest? come on, you say that you buy the CD after you've downloaded the songs to see if you like the artist, bull! not to say i haven't downloaded stuff before, i have one mix CD which defineatly doesn't sound as good as a real CD, but those of you who do this crap all the time are common criminals!

from planet mu
File sharing seems rather bad for small labels but then electronic music labels are some of the most downloaded on the internet – even though home taping didn’t kill music this seems like something different –
Well, our sales are down... I'm sure Rephlex and Warp's are too. It must be at least 50% due to downloading mp3s, it might not be - who can tell?
It could just be there are less people buying cds generally and electronic music is just unsexy. But the low sales mean we can't release much vinyl anymore because it loses money unless we sell over, say 1500 for a 12" or 3000 for an album (2LP) just for that format - and not many releases sell that much these days. I was talking to my man Mark Melton (who used to work for GPR in early 90s, you know - Black Dog, Beaumont Hannant, Luke Slater etc.) and he was saying that whatever album he released in 92-95 was guaranteed to sell 10,000 - 15,000 minimum or at least 5000 - 7000 for a 12" single and when they started to sell only 3000 for one of their 12"s they were in trouble... so when the UK gets true file sharing capabilities (beyond 40 mins on a phone for an mp3 at 128k) then we'll all be in trouble.

how do U feel about piracy in general,.do U feel the same way about audio-software hacks as U do about Mp3z?
I bet 99.9% of the underpayed artists use hacks which they didn't pay for. Cheating softwarehouses out of money,.etc etc blah blah.
