Quaristice: Your Verdict?

amazing maze max patch:

which composes itself at the moment of its sounding
which is not merely a reproduction of a pre-fabricated
notation
which is capable of reacting on exterior influences
which exhibits infinite temporal expansion
which never repeats itself.

Amazing Maze is represented by a computer program which
generates music by manipulating sampled instrumental sounds
according to certain compositional strategies that are
carried out in different structure generators. Each
generator synthesizes its own characteristic sound world.

im sure it was used for 'bnc castl', but who cares, i
suppose it's still art, but any of us could of made that
track.

The only trouble I have with this album, and really most of
their records, is the hard time I have reconciling the
playful, inventive, complex, detailed, nimble, deft music
with the image of the two brutal, thuggish looking
individuals that create it. The type of guys you'd find in a
pub glaring at you, waiting for you to make eye contact to
use as a pretext to battering you. The type of guys giving
the shop owner grief in an off license, the sort of men you
find asleep in the bookies. It's just not right. Are the
those two blokes really Autechre?

i mean a real 808 bassdrum, in a simple 4/4/ pattern, at
90bpm. if a track is worse than that then it is bad. if it's
better than that it is good.

I don't really like it.
Paralel suns was great, Io reminded me of a cheap circus
although it had a cool creepy voice.
WNSN is the best track, but Quaristice as a whole bores me,
even during the 1st listen it bored me.
An average album with a small handful of cool moments imo.
The worst part for me is I know there's nothing beneath the
surface to discover unlike previous albums.

i've been listening back and forth between draft, confield
and quaristice, and yeah, it has begun to become apparent to
me that there is a lot "more" in the earlier albums.

all around they sound heavier(which i like), sound more
alien and not so 'idm' type.
i don't know exactly how to explain it, but it sounds like
an idm album where they mess around with effects.
i put on uviol and was amazed at the change in direction.

i dunno i guess quari doesn't sound as.. innovative or even
just 'deep' as ALL their other albums.

it's still a great idm album, with a nice shock value, but
is it a great AUTECHRE album? guess i will need to give it
more time.

some more thoughts:

1.) Quaristice is a great album. Is it their best? I'm not
sure yet. I keep going back to the barcode interview, which
obviously sheds light on the album in a somewhat
incriminating way... CX, I agree with you to a
certain degree. I won't say this is "thrown" together, as
there is a sense of immediacy to the album that is somewhat
more violent (raw?) than last albums and is quite refreshing
in a lot of ways. However, I'm not sure it's best to say
it's lacking the maturity of past albums, but certainly
seems like this album is an after thought, as opposed to a
deliberate and concentrated effort from the outset.

2.) Is the production for tracks like Simmm, fwzE, and
chenc9 different than the other songs? I almost feel like
they "wrote" these songs, while edited live arrangements in
order to make the other "songs."

3.) I'm very curious about the second disc on the lmtd.
edition version. I dont think it is within Autechre's
nature to just compile a bunch of pisstakes and throw them
into something that netted the label the equivalent of $75k
USD. I think the second disc will have a deliberate
purpose. How funny would it be if THAT was the real album
and the 20 track album was their compiled "public face",
reserving the real shit for the real fans?

Doing the math, the second disc will be 5 minutes shorter
than the actual release with almost half the number of
tracks. Ultimately, this means we are getting longer
versions of what we have heard, which is something I find
myself wishing as I listen to this version of Quaristice.
HOPEFULLY, fingers fucking crossed, chenc9 is on the second
disc and we get to hear that melody that was coming in
around 30min. of the Untilted live set.

does anyone else who owns a machine drum and monomachine
think a lot of this album feels like mono/machine drum jams?
i mean like raw jam sessions. nothing wrong with that at all
but honestly this album feels more improvised to me than
Gescom Minidisc. its pretty different for autechre, the
deliberateness seems completely absent. very free form
Quaristice is.

Jackoffer. I also noticed that these are very obviously
machinedrum and monomachine jams. Plus, Rob pretty much
confirmed it in that interview with Barcode or whatever.

And I am sure you recognize how most of the monomachine
synth sounds are being made. And the vocoder work.

Nacamat, you still haven't listened to any even though you
can legitimately obtain it?

yes i mean untilted was admittedly done a lot on machine
drum and monomachine as well, and yuou can definitly tell.
but a lot of untilted doesnt feel like jam sessions its a
very deliberate and syncopated tight album with very little
freeform aspects. This album literally feels like Sean and
Rob spent a week jamming with eachother and cut out the best
parts. They even say in these recent round of interviews
that some of the tracks were originally 1 hour long jam
sessions before they were cut down. I think the raw aspect
of this album is the main driving theme, and they seem to
have intentionally not rededited it back in the computer to
refine it.

the re-editing in the computer is imo what they did with the
raw monomachine and machinedrum beats from untitled to
'compose' the final songs

to me im hearing only deliberate composition in the strictly
ambient beatless songs and maybe Simmm and WNSN and Chenc9

and unusually this album to me sounds the most human out of
any autechre album previous to it, for the reasons i listed
above. there is a primal feel about this AE album that i
cannot explain.

Even farmersmanual would find some of Quaristice very
difficult and chaotic to listen to.

the overdriven bass does remind me of pro radii but honestly
it sounds to me like they are treading same of the same
ground as in the newest Gescom a1- d1 release.

i mean this by that it sounds like a cutup plundered acid
techno song edit to shit. instead of outright stealing an
acid song to cutup they either used pieces of their own old
songs or made a new acidy song for the purpose to cutup.

I've given it some thought, and heres a more refined verdict
on my part.

This album to me doesn't seem to have a concept or theme,
which is something every ae album has had prior, its part of
what makes autechre so great, a new flavor every few years.
This is just like a random collection.

There are alot of great tracks on here, I'd say 10 or so and
I'm not counting the drone tracks which I also like.

Tracks like sonDEremawe, Steels, Fol3 are just pointless
wastes of album time to me. Boring filler.

Steels is basically pro radii stripped naked of it's
phatness and told to walk out in the cold.
Fol3 to me is just totally uninteresting stretched windy
garbage with too much loud doppler shifting to appreciate
what might be behind it.

Nothign special about Outh9x, Notwo was great however and
should have been the true ending to a true beginning
(Altibzz).

Alot of people already expressed what a pisstake bnc Castl
is so I don't even need to get started on that joke of a
track.

IO would be so much better without that untilted liveset
clownish loop of a melody.

chenc9 should have had that fantastic 30:00 mark from the
glasgow set but failed to give some of us what we wanted.

All the rest I haven't mentioned are the truely great tracks
to me.

played Simmm, WNSN, Tankakern and Rale. the other tracks
sound very raw and like jams in comparison
