Yeah. Polo shirt

I've grown to like the artwork (still can't wait to see the
limited edition for real) and my

A u t e c h r e

shirt looks lush, but I gotta say I designed better artwork
with a stencil and a pen when I got bored. I really don't
know what TDR was playing at on that one...

ah i was confusing it with a turtle-neck (called polo in
norwegian)

...and in swedish (an ae polo would be a quite funny piece
of clothing!)

the album got a bit better, yesterday - as I was listening
to the LP while importing it to my PowerBook...

(the album artwork is great, only the chiastic chaotic map
is better I think)

Ok so I was a little late coming to this album. With some
of my earlier posts I was only hearing a track here and
there but I finally have had some opportunities to sit down
with this and give it a full listen.

I understand why people are frustrated with it. I mean,
Confield and Draft were so detail oriented. There was
definetly some intense composition going on with those
albums. One-hair brush kind of arrangements.

If Confield and Draft were two sides of one coin, then I
think Untilited and Quaristice are two sides of another
coin. I think they seem like they want to get back to
something a little more raw, a little more visceral and
rather than agonizing over the placement of the next snare
drum theyd rather have some fun, get some patterns going and
just jam out on them.

I can't blame them for that, really. And if I listen to
either of these albums with that in mind I enjoy it a lot
more. I can't say "man this is a lot loopier and less
layered that Confield or Draft" I have to say "If I went to
a show and heard them jamming this crap I would be all about
it."

I like it.

Quaristice 4/5
Untilted 5/5

I'm really annoyed the 2CD ver wasn't released as standard.
I now have to bother my arse to download the missing half of
the release let alone decide if I'd have been better off not
bothering in the first place.

I went and listened to Untilted again and I think it's a
much more interesting listen. I guess I just like longer
tracks which develop and have a few sections more than lots
of short tracks. I also prefer the production and detail in
their other recent stuff. It is good nice wondrous waiting
for "moments" or shifts in their music, but this dick is
sound more of a bunch of short sketches to mine ear.

probably the best electronic album of this millenium so
far.

It's so complex. If it had been made by any other artist, it
would be classifiable as junk. But we KNOW that autechre
have slaved over this. crafting every dull moment, every
jarring mis-beat.

It is WONDERFUL. God and his angels couldn't surpass this
cacophony!

It's super obsessive and silly geeky for me to ask this
again from you, but how far are Ae pushing the Elektron gear
with this release? I'll find out in a bit as I'm going to
get a machinedrum soon, but I'm just curious: some guy on
the elektron forum claimed the album sounded like demos for
one of the machines. Be as detailed and wanky as you want in
your response, I get off on that stuff. Sometimes you get
disturbingly interested in the process, you know...

just curious and i dont mean to sound like a jerk at all,
but would learning how they made the record change your
opinion about it? if they made it simply and on the fly
would that make it better or worse for you? and vice versa,
if they slaved over the placement of every single aspect,
would that make it better or worse?

offline CS2x from London (United Kingdom) on 2008-03-10 19:12 [#02183913]

I quite like some improvised jazz albums, so I don't think
knowing they made it on the fly would negatively affect my
opinion, although I can't deny that finding out certain
things does damage or enhance my enjoyment of pieces of
music, silly as that may sound. Even if the final product is
what matters, knowing that was a labour of love and was
doing some special things process-wise can add something to
the listening experience, if you're weird like me and care
about that sort of stuff. I mean (and this has nothing to
do with Ae), if I loved a piece of music, and then found out
most of it was presets lazily stuck together or ripped off
from another piece of music, I would be pretty put off,
regardless of its genre or who made it.

right on, totally understand where youre coming from and
partially agree. i love this album more because it was
birthed from the jamming on the untilted tour. i think its
brilliant of them to reinvent what they do in such a way.

Hehe it isn't at all, it's more so to redo LCC yourself on
the MD... which I've kinda done... yeah anyways.

Listening to it right now there's quite a bit, they have a
UW version so there's quite a lot of sample mangling going
on in there I think. A lot of their signature clicky sounds
and meaty hits from Untilted are Machinedrum. Anyway, the
fact that you can do Autechre on the MD isn't really a
reason for buying the MD.

Reasons:
-a 16x3 note polyphonic MIDI sequencer if you want it.
-a very powerful FX processor with automation control (BEAT
REPEAT with the delay)
-four (very powerful) drum machines really (and a sampler if
you buy the UW)
-an envelope filter (c'mon, you gotta love that!)
-a weapon (the aluminium front panel can be so sharp that
some people have cut themselves on it)

^Those are the reasons why you should get one.

i finally snagged a damn copy and just finished listening to
it for the first time. the more it went on the more i
realised how much of a huge, sprawling album this is, much
of that thanks to the many tracks. my two least favourite
autechre albums are ep7 and untilted, and quaristice somehow
manages to combine them into something really awesome. they
may not be advancing anymore but to me this sounds like
classic ae, a true return to form. A+++

As a 20th anniversary album, Quaristice does pretty damn
well ("Quaristice" = unique to this album):

Altibzz = Incunabula/Amber ambience
The PLC = Untilted tour
IO = Untilted tour
Plyphon = Draft 7.30
Perlence = Confield
Son DEremawe = LP5
Simmm = LP5/EP7
Palalel Suns = Quaristice
Steels = Tri Repetae
Tankakern = Untilted
Rale = Draft 7.30
Fol3 = Hafler Trio collab
fwzE = some Gescom stuff
90101 = Quaristice
bnc Castl = Quaristice
Theswere = Envane
WNSN = Anvil Vapre
Chenc9 = Untilted tour
Notwo = Quaristice
Outh9X = Quaristice

Quaristice is probably now the best starting point for any
newcomer to Ae, it encompasses almost every style they've
covered over their 20 years of activity. I love how I can
get every aspect of Ae's sound within 80 minutes :)

I haven't heard it is, as I only just found out about it the
other day and I haven't been able to find it in any store
here yet. But after reading some reviews, it sounds
interesting. It sounds like something I'll be more inclined
to like, which is good as I was getting very tired of where
they were going with their music.

I haven't opened my package from warp containing the 2CD
version yet.
I have played the tracks from my ripped quaristice-vinyl and
the quadrange ep flacs quite a lot. Together with the
toronto show 080412 the selections in the "ae 2008"-playlist
works quite well. Not near some of the older stuff, but
still interesting music for me.
