Ireland had their chances, and dominated posession in the
second half

They deserve 2 points from 2 games at least !
Now Ireland can qualify ! Lets hope Saudi are a bit better
tomorrow (though I doubt it !!)

there are problems with the basque country because just a
few idiots kill people in the name of their region´s
independence, there is no such problem with catalunya, its
true that some independentists would like to have their own
country and therefor their own team in sports, but as
nowadays thats not possible and many players in spain are
from catalunya or the basque country I think most of the
people in spain want our team to win (I am talking of the
99%)
hierro would never do such thing as he is an old friend of
all the other players even though they are from another team
during the season... dont believe everything you hear.

you know me, and you know I wouldnt mind telling you that
you are right if you were

Yes nac, I agree .. I'm just wondering why such a great
football nation can have such a disastrous history ... Have
Spain ever been past the last 8 ?
If not, that's amazingly bad for the country with the best
league/teams in the world.

Currently (Best leagues in world )=

1)Spain
2)England
3)Germany
4)Italy

.... but Italy have the best national team IMO.

spain once won the euro cup in 1964 and got to the final
losing against france in 1984.
we were 4th in the world cup in 1950
7th in mexico and 8th in USA

its true that our team hasnt come up to everyones
expectations based on the great teams we have here...but who
knows, we have always been very unlucky, and our character
is a bit loser (remember Don Quijote, this is a good example
of the spanish character) we always have to be sad cos we
play well and we lost... we use to say:

"we played like never before and we lost like always"

some people say that our teams are good cos of the foreign
players that come here and that the spanish players dont
have the responsability in their teams...and then in the
spanish team they are not used to face the responsability.

I like the quote :)

This is a famous English quote

"Football is a game of 90 minutes..
..and in the end the Germans win on penalties"

hehe... not today :D

yea we always say that too... hehe

I like the football played in spain and england, also the
football played by teams from portugal and netherlands

germany and italy are very competitive (the most) but their
style is so poor... IMO, they try to defend only...and then
they have great forwardings...

its clear that its a great method to win championships...
but I prefer watching an english or spanish match rather
than an italian one.

(italy hasnt got even one team in the 1/4 finals of the
champions league in the last two years, which means that
teams trying to play good football and not only defend, are
begining to get good results)

tomorrow:

denmark - senegal
(we will see how good senegal is)

camerun - arabia saudi
(camerun must win if they want to go on the next stage)

france - uruguay
(the match of the day, the one losing says goodbye, and if
they tie they can both say goodbye depending on the result
of the next matches)

what do you think?

my thinking is:

denmark 2 - 1 senegal

camerun 3 - 1 arabia saudi

france 2 - 1 uruguay

i just read an article about players that participate in
this world cup.
majority of them is playing in english premier league, most
surpriseing for me is that spanish league which is the
strongest imo is probably on 5 th spot with participants.
from english league there is 101 palyers
italy-78
germany-59
france-58
it doesn't say about other leagues but it must be spanish in
5 th.

yes!!! IRELAND!!!
I think it's really funny the way the score was 1-1 and all
the Irish and going mental and the Germans are totally
pissed-off.

I watched the match with 5 friends, 4 German, 1 American.
They were ALL for Germany. That last goal felt really good I
can tell you!

Time ago, I spoke about this argument with Phob.
Two things I don't like about Italian football:

1) - Too much defensive and close style of play.

2) - Too much simulations and a lot of times they're great
actors.

I prefer English football 'cos they play faster without
simulation... in England the players are strong man.
I liked the match ENGLAND - SWEDEN 'cos it was a real match
between 2 phisically strong teams without simulations.

Anyway I liked very match last match of Italy and I think
it's one of best Italy who I never saw. Totti and Vieri are
awesome, then we've other great champions as Del Piero,
Inzaghi, Montella, Nesta, Cannavaro, Buffon, and Mr.
Trappattoni, one of the best coach in the world (and also
very nice and funny man) I like and I believe in this
Italy.

well thats a nice point..I have to think of it to see if
there is some logic explanation...

offline nacmat on 2002-06-05 17:12 [#00251056]
Points: 31271 Status: Lurker

at first it makes me think that we must have less foreign
players than the rest... cos each country has only 23
players so the rest till 101 are foreigners.

or we have less foreign players or many of our foreign
players havent gone to the world cup, this last would mean
that the best foreigners are in england... well maybe, but
that doesnt make sense, seeing the results of spanish league
teams in the last 5 years (4 times there was a spanish team
in the final of the champions league)

offline nacmat on 2002-06-05 17:16 [#00251060]

most of the players of eastern countries play in germany.

most of the africans play in france

there are lots of brazilians in spain and many of them
havent gone to the world cup.
the same with players from argentina

some from netherlands couldn go as they didnt qualify.

this could be some reasons... anyway, do you think that
means that spanish league is not as good?

offline tolstoyed from the ocean on 2002-06-05 17:45 [#00251110]
Points: 50073 Status: Moderator

spanish league is the strongest one imo, though there is
many competative teams in english premier league also.
i dont like german and french leagues too much. because i
just dont like style they are playing.
most strange imo is that italian clubs don't have any succes
in european cups, because i think they have a pretty strong
league themselfs, and they have at least 5 very strong
teams.

I think that italian teams need to reconsider their way of
playing, football consits on scoring and they turn it to the
opposite (avoid that the other team scores) its true that
they have reached the highest level under that philosophy (3
world cups) but lately their league teams dont get so far in
competition.

anyway I like this Italian team for the worl cup... vieri,
totti, inzaghi, del piero, montella, del veccio, nesta,
maldini, di livio... they are a great team, but i prefer
when they try to score than whaen they only try to defend

offline tolstoyed from the ocean on 2002-06-05 18:35 [#00251183]
Points: 50073 Status: Moderator

i think nesta and cannavaro can do defending themselfs,
while totti, montella and vieri should concentrate all their
strenght in attack. the only problem are their midfielders.

offline nacmat on 2002-06-05 18:40 [#00251191]
Points: 31271 Status: Lurker | Followup to tolstoyed: #00251183

they dont care about midfield, there they just want to do
the pressing, but they dont vreate the game in the midfield,
they go straight from defense line to attack line... their
midfielders mission is to do the pressing to get the
ball...after that no creation takes place in that area.

when I talk about creation in the midfield I am talking of
what zidane does in france, or beckam in england, veron,
ballack...

offline tolstoyed from the ocean on 2002-06-05 18:43 [#00251198]
Points: 50073 Status: Moderator

yes but the only players that are capable of doing that(i
mean totti and del piero) both play as strikers, instead in
midfield as creators like zidane and veron

thats the point.

totti could play as zidane, with vieri and inzaghi ahead...
but that would be to crazy for their way of understanding
football

tolstoyed which is your team? I mean besides slovenia.
mine is barcelona, even though I am from madrid, its hard,
above all knowing that real madrid is the best team and that
we will never reach them

well all the teams have already started the
competition...this are my first and most important
impressions:

african teams are getting really dangerous

ronaldo came back to life, and the football scene is happy
for that.

Italy and germany are much stronger than I thought .... this
means they will be there till the end.

korea is really a good team and they can do a good
competition

argentina will lead their group as the english dont seem
that can stop them.

usa showed us that we had overrated portugal.

for Nacmat and Tolstoyed:

Ok friends, about Totti and Del Piero as Zidane, I disclose
the news that in the next match against Croatia (and
probably in all the other matches) Italy will play with
Vieri and Inzaghi as strikers and Totti behind as midfield
and creator of play.

Del Piero doesn't like to be midfield and everytime he says
that he prefers to play as striker.
In Italy there's a big argue about Del Piero, striker or
midfield...

I know there is a lot of controversy in Italy with del
piero´s position... I think he is a striker like raul in
spain, this means he is not like vieri or morientes... but
he prefers playing as near from the goal as possible.
in spain raul, and even butragueño (in the old days) or
kluivert are strikers but they play behind the real striker,
and they dont score as much as vieri or batistuta ... but
they create the chances of goal.
