Riots in Moscow after the game .. 1 dead, 8 injured , 3
serious ....

Apparently this was some kind of surprise result. Not to me,
Japan were unlucky not to beat Belgium, they are hosts with
home advantage, and Russia have done nothing at this level
for over 15 years. I thought Japan would win. I hope that
this is a one-off event and other audiences can take defeat
more graciously, Although its not clear whether the police
helped to incite the problems in Moscow, but they often do
:(...

sorry to slur this thread with bad news but its relevant to
the way the world reacts to the event

well one teen boy died in england after the match with
argentina and they had won ...so...its really bad news and
we should worry about this kind of reactions around football

if france qualifies they will become a possible winer, I was
thinking of argentina and france before the world cup
started, but now I think that brazil could do it... also
Italy (the other day they lost but the referee had to do a
lot there, cos italy should have won 3-2) germany maybe...
and I wish spain was the surprise.

so far the only big team that has come up to my expectations
was Brazil, and not even for their play, just for their
results

nacmat:

after the argentina-england game, it did spring to mind that
there is a possibility of a spain-england final. tho i
wouldn't be putting any money on it. in fairness, the
italians were robbed, although perhaps a draw would have
been a fair result ?? but the italians still seemed to have
a lot in them, a lot of potential that was wasted in the
match, so i still think they are a force to be reckoned with
(provided they make it through to the playoffs). it'd be
interesting to see how the sweden-argentina/england-nigeria
games go. it almost seems inconceivable, but well possible
for argentina not to make it through. korea-usa should be
quite interesting to watch, as would poland-portugal, see if
they can regain some form?

Argentina is going to be the world champion, but football
soccer is the most beautiful game in the world, i enjoy
every game in world cup, here in my country live
transmissions start at 2:30 am and ends, after 3 matches, at
9:30am, i didnt miss a match.

I agree about Italy, they are really to be considered... cos
they have such a solid defense (not last match though) and
so much quality in the front line.

england still doesnt get my vote...they have good manners
(sometimes) but I miss some players that didnt go to the
cup.

argentina and above all france have it really hard to
pass... france needs to win for over two goals against
denmark (one of my favorites so far) so they can say good
bye really too soon.

Yeah ... agree with you .. i don't realistically think
england will reach the final :) .. but who knows eh? Yeah,
shame mcmanaman isn't in - he's such a cool player to watch,
back in the day when he used to be in liverpool - hehe ..

I think argentina & italy are very strong teams, but its
down to maths now .. if they get through, i think much of
the talk before their losses will still apply ??

is italy such solid in its defense???
is argentina such a compact team???
does argentina really have good solutions in attack??

it seems with teams like that (of that calibre) it always
comes down to motivation and such psychological matters? but
if they can get through, i think they will be better teams
for it. croatia is the type of team that has the ability to
upset though (seems a lot of teams in the world cup have
this ability, senegal, usa :) .. wicked tournament to watch
tho.

KOBE, Japan (Reuters) - Injured England midfielder Owen
Hargreaves is to have a scan on Monday to determine the
extent of his shin injury, the Football Association (FA) has
said.

Hargreaves, who had to be substituted after 19 minutes of
Friday's 1-0 World Cup win over Argentina, underwent an
x-ray on Saturday which revealed no fracture of the bone.

"He will have a scan to establish the seriousness or
otherwise of the injury tomorrow," an FA spokesman said.

The outcome is vital for an England squad running short of
fully-fit midfielders after two matches in group F.

Manager Sven-Goran Eriksson had already ruled Hargreaves out
of Wednesday's final game against Nigeria, which England
need to at least draw to be sure of reaching the second
round.

That left the Swede with only four fully match-fit players
for the four places in midfield -- former standby Trevor
Sinclair, who replaced Hargreaves against Argentina, skipper
David Beckham and Nicky Butt, both just back from injuries
suffered late last season, and Paul Scholes.

Joe Cole is carrying a thigh problem which ruled him out of
Friday's victory over Argentina, while Kieron Dyer, who has
just overcome a knee injury, was kept on the substitutes'
bench at Sapporo.

"Every time we have an injury it happens to a midfielder,"
Eriksson said at England's Awaji Island base on Saturday.

"I hope that will stop -- otherwise we will be running out
of midfielders."

Since April, seven of the nine midfielders in the running
for a place in England's World Cup squad have been hit by
injury -- Hargreaves, Beckham, Dyer, Butt, Cole, Danny
Murphy, who was sent home from their training camp in South
Korea, and Steven Gerrard, ruled out of the finals before
the squad left home.

Only Sinclair and Scholes have stayed fully fit throughout.

while croatia weren't exactly favourites to win, they seem
to be a type of team that have the ability to beat the best
of the best. whilst not necessarily being 'the best
themselves' ??

well netherlands should be here instead of some of those
exotic nations with no football culture at all, but thats
how it works... fifa prefers it this way rather than having
the best teams in the competition....

of course I am glad those countries have the oportunity to
enjoy the party of football, and so they get into the
culture, and we all learn a lot off far away coutries...but
what I dont like is to see netherlands out of the party.

i totally second that .. *sighs* - they certainly would have
added to the 'party' ..

what are your thoughts on today's matches .. korea/usa
(this'll be a toughy), tunisia/belgium (belgium shouldn't
struggle, but who knows), portugal/poland (portugal should
win, but again, can't take anything for granted).

korea - usa:
it will be a beautifull match cos they play so fast, always
in the search of goeals, with some lacks of quality but with
a huge effort, their inmature tactics will alow us to see a
goos spectacle, but imposible to know who will win...I would
bet for korea.

belgium - tunisia:
no problem for belgium I think, but not a very "sunny"
match

portugal - poland:
I would bet for portugal, but who can trust them now? anyway
they both have to win if they want to pass so the need of
goals added to the individual quality of portugal will
surely give us a nice match too

Hello friends... well, as you know Italy lost 2-1. My
opinion? It was shame for 2 reasons:

1) Italy played a awful match... we can't play with only one
striker (Vieri) against Croatia. We had INZAGHI, DEL PIERO
and MONTELLA sit down as onlooker.

2) We had a f**kin' bad luck with the referee on the right
that remove 2 regolars goals.

We deserved to win but we played a awful match.

woofer:

I would be so angry if a referee dod that to me. its not
fair that you were denied 2 regular goals...thats too
much...(one thing is when the referee doesnt give you a
penalty, but this...this is too much for a refereee in the
world cup, they should be better)

well my friend, you have to win mexico (that will be hard)
to avoid problems, so go for it.

congratulations to japan, they have a lot of quality in the
midfield (inamoto, nakata)

portugal ... man, I think portugal is out... anyway usa have
it clear now to qualify while horea still have a hard match
against figo´s team... I still dont know what could happen,
but i think korea and usa have their right well owed to pass

The referee (from Denmark) that denied 2 regulars goals was
the same that penalized Italy against France in the final of
european championship 2000.
*** IT'S A SHAME! ***

Next Thursday we must win against MEXICO, no doubts.

woofer>

The referee in Euro 2000 final was Anders Frisk (Sweden)

The ref in Italy v Croatia was Graham Poll (England)

I think the linesman was Danish, but I'm not sure. Graham
Poll is regarded as a poor referee in England, and there is
no doubt that we have the poorest referees in the world for
some reason. Collina was outstanding v. Argentina, as he
always is, and I hope England can send some referees that
good in the future.

Yesterday I studied Mexico against Ecuador and it didn't
impress me so much, it's a good team but not invincible.
If Italy will draw or lose against Mexico, it deserve to
back home and leave World Cup, imo.
Italy should have an hard life against teams as strong as
Argentina, England, Brasil, etc.. not against Croatia and
Mexico.

Believe me, this Italy is one of the strongest who I never
saw and they could win this world cup (referee apart).

The referee hasn' much faults... the only one GUILTY is the
DANISH LINESMAN.

Yesterday yhe linesman admited his faults on TV.
