its true, lots of penalties... spain is very lucky cos we had two for us and both were very important to close the matches... and I think those werent really penalties... referees dont sign penalties like that in spanish league

Spain - Paraguay in Group B. For a long time it appeared it would be the same old story for the Iberian team with Jose Luis Chilavert and co leading by Francisco Arce’s goal after 9 minutes. But the introduction of Fernando Morientes at half time proved the catalyst with Spain scoring three goals, two by the Real Madrid striker giving him a record at international level of 16 goals in 21 games. After winning their opening two matches in a finals for the first time since 1950, Spain become the first country to have qualified for the Round of 16.
In a tournament, which is producing surprises and entertainment like never before, is it possible the perennial underachievers could finally come good? Let’s wait to see what tomorrow brings.

THE DAY REPLAYED - It took eight days but the “Group of death” finally shed blood. Nigeria have been eliminated after two consecutive defeats, while one of the tournament favourites Argentina suffered a serious wound when losing to England. The surprising result comes after defeats to other fancied teams France and Portugal and underlines the belief that the first Asian finals could be the most open and exciting ever.
Advantage England. The latest chapter in the Argentina – England FIFA World Cup™ saga was by no means a classic but like yesterday’s France - Uruguay game in Group A, the tension was palpable. With many of the same protagonists involved from the France 98 Round of 16 clash, the scene was set under the Sapporo dome for another great duel. But although there were some crunching tackles, it never turned into the pitched battle many predicted.
Beckham gained his revenge when converting a penalty on the stroke of half-time for the winning goal and, following his wonder goal four years ago, Michael Owen confirmed that he is England’s lethal weapon terrifying the Argentine defence throughout. But what may well last longer in memory is the disputed penalty where Owen fell under the challenge of Mauricio Pochettino. Although it lacks the romance of Maradona’s Hand of Goal in Mexico 86, the decision is sure to be talked about in the pubs and clubs of Buenos Aires as El Diego’s has among Englishmen. Under coach Sven-Goran Eriksson’s composed influence, England have climbed above their rivals in the group, while Argentina’s destiny is in their own hands.

we could do a game:
we can vote for the best player of the world champion in each position to make a final perfect team, for example:
for me a good team would be: (considering a 4-4-2)
kahn (gk) maldini (back left) andersson (centre) gamarra (centre) puyol (back right) de pedro (forward left) beckam (forward right) junhiño (mid centre) ljumberg (mid centre) ronaldo vieri
this is only an example, I wasnt in the mood to really think off everybody, but if we all do an ideal team like this one (4-4-2) then we chose those in each position that were voted more.... isnt it a good idea?

I see my idea didnt catch up with the MB spirit... ok I have to admit that...
but still I dont want this thread to die, cos it could be nice to post any opinion on football or about the world cup in this thread, so that at the end of the championship we would have like a clue on everything that happened... so far this thread shows all our impressions of the first matches in the competition... I think its a good thread .
so:
what do we have tomorrow??
slovenia - south africa (go slovenia) brazil - china (ronaldo will score??) italia - croacia (is italy that strong really) see you then, and enjoy the football

its a good team though I reckon its difficult to think of those players playing well in the world cup cos we tend to think of those we know are the best in the last years no matter how they are doing in the world cup...if we really thought of thids we should choose someone from denmark, senegal, usa, korea or costarica, as they are doing so well

Tolstoyed> Recoba is the only player that I don't like in your team...very selfish and over-rated

I think my team may be less strong, but I'm basing it on how players have impressed me in the games I have seen in this tournament
