the first one is a pretty solid game. has puzzle elements
and perhaps even the tinyiest hint of rpg style in it. there
are certain weapons that are not effective against some
enemies and vice versa.

i thought the visuals were nice, but hey like uzim said.

still playing metroid prime 2

if anyone has payed attention to my posts in this thread,
you'll see i'm a bit of a percentage nut. well, i'm about 27
hours into the game with 92% scans and 77% items (and game
completion i think)

obviously, i'm going for 100. i've kept my online reference
(gamefaqs) to a bare minimum. i think i'll get something
like 98 or 99 then freak out and never touch the game again

I don't know, it's just not my kind of thing, the gameplay
and the graphics.

I bought "far cry". I'm a bit disappointed in the graphics,
every review raves about how INCREDIBLE the visuals are and
it just looks okay to me. haven't played much, so maybe it
kicks in after a little while.

also playing "Clive Barker's Undying" - game from 2001,
built on the good old Unreal engine. it looks incredibly
dated but FUCK am I enjoying that one! nice story and good
sounddesign - good sounddesign makes up for a lot, I now
find.

in the last weeks I've also replayed "Half-life 2" with all
the graphics pumped up (first time, on a different comp was
with everything on lowlowlow) - it still is one of the most
visually dazzling games to me. it's not so much the
lighting, but the very design of the characters and the
world itself, I think.
and yet again - the sounddesign in HL2 is just superb.

There are actually two GBA Metroid games including the one I
mentioned and Metroid Fusion. I think Super Metroid may have
been better though. Zero Mission is basically a super
enhanced remaster of the original NES Metroid.

As for XCOM, go here to grab it. It runs off of
Win98/2000/ME/XP, though if you're using a flat screen
monitor the screen is black. There should be a patch
somewhere in their discussion you can download for that
though.

Silpheed: The Lost Planet on PS2

i went searching at a couple game stores today for shooter
games (the old school flight kinds) i looked for r-type
final, gradius v, gradius III and IV, and ikaruga. came up
empty every place i looked. i did spot the above mentioned
game though for 10 dollars, and i noticed the design company
(treasure) had done work on many past shooters, including
two of the games i was looking for.

i'm playing it now and it's so so. about a 6 / 10 but i'm a
bit more satisfied than that because i was really in the
mood for this style game. it's lacking in-game upgrades
(health and weapons), has a very repetitive format to the
gameplay, and lacks any saving progress or password
feature.

on the plus side, it has a nice rise in difficulty as levels
go on.

Cool. I got the Sega CD version of Silpheed off of Emule a
while ago, pretty stylish, I love simplistic polygon fakery
for some reason. I've been thinking of buying the PS2
Silpheed from Blockbuster, it's cheap. Is the music any
good? If yes, I'll buy it, if no, I... might not buy it.

to play than prime, but not so easy at the same time. lotta

are there any gunstar heroes fans here? a remake is being

also from the makers of xcom theres a tactical strategy game
also being released for the GBA called Rebelstar.

http://gameboy.ign.com/articles/647/647451p1.html

seems to resemble advanced wars. i will be getting that too
once it comes out next week...

i love advanced wars but can never find anyone to play.
advanced wars is like GO to me for some reason, its sorta
rock-paper-scissors at times but has lots of good balance in
which you can always have a good opportunity to win.

in reply to ophecks: the silpheed soundtrack is pretty weak
imo. i've concluded that the whole game is pretty weak and i
traded it in.

in reply to anyone who wants to know what videogames i am

i found ikaruga in the town i used to live in. it's an
awesome game and i have yet to beat it.

i also traded in a bunch of games i didn't play at all and
got bombastic (devil dice 2) and suikoden III for ps2. and
some credit left over as well. bombastic is a great little
puzzle game and suikoden i'm gonna wait for a rainy day or
something to start heavily.

i also bought OPM (official playstion magazine) solely for
the demo of shadow of the colossus, which is incredible.

Well, I'm currently playing to Tekken 5 for ps2. I have all
episodes of it, I have also the original and first Tekken on
ps1 (Japanese version).

In this episode there are special features, never been on
others Tekkens, you can edit all personages, changing thier
dressed; then you can also play to old Tekken on ps2 (Tekken
1, Tekken 2 and Tekken 3).

Anyway I always liked the series, I love this new episode
too, my favourite personages are: King, Kazuya and Jin
Kazama.

Nice game, recommended for all people who love fighting
games, anyway my favourite fighting game will be always Soul
Calibour.

Finaly, after half a year I finished playing Doom 3. I was
terrified during the first half and played only a couple of
minutes a day. Recently I had to start my master's thesis at
the university, so I returned to the game and finished the
rest in 3 days.
The final boss was so goddamn easy and the skeletor with
homing missles on his shoulder's looked so stupid that I
wouldn't give this game a 10/10. How can you fear an enemy
who looks like it was thought up by a 5-year-old.
But I had my fair share of terror, thank you id Software.

been playing F.E.A.R. since yesterday.

the singleplayer demo made me go "meh" but then I read the
raving reviews so I thought "what the hell" and blew 50
euros on a game. damn it.

anyway, it's excellent lol.

I'm normally not the guy for 'special moves' but this game
has me doing them. you can do a slidekick if you hit
forward, right mouse button and crouch at the same time
(which still means I go "ehhh", staring at my keyboard while
I try to figure out how to pull it off), all in first
person, which looks great.

even better is a bicycle kick which has you flying through
the air and kicking someone in the face.

like I said, I normally can't be bothered doing those kind
of moves, but here I've even done a few bicycle kicks out of
sheer panic, even done them in 'slo-mo', the games name for
bullet time.

great thing about these kicks is that it just looks great
while you're doing them and feels even better.

I must say F.E.A.R. also has the best implementation of
bullet time I have experienced thus far - probably because
of all the particle shit - it's amazing to see particles
spray from walls while your bullets slam into them, or even
how the blood sprays from your enemies.

the visuals are great, even though I run it at minimal
specs. but the sound is the real winner.

I'm not too convinced by the horror aspect - it's quite
prevalent in the first parts of the game but it almost seems
like the designers kind of forget about it later on.
hopefully it'll return though.

that said, I do agree with some reviews I've read - you need
to play this one in the dark. it doesn't work as well with
daylight around you.

and yes, the AI is pretty amazing, not to say nasty at
times. it really gives you a slight high when you're able to
defeat 12 opponents in a quick but spectacular manner, even
when using slo-mo (which does make it easier ofcourse).

haven't tried out multiplayer yet, so can't say anything
about that.

Shadow of the Colossus

oh yes.

I'm about 4 and a half hours and 10 (out of 16) colossi
done.

It's a bit short, I'm afraid. In all fairness, I had the
demo so the first colossus took only a few minutes. And I
basically follow the light of the sword and look for the
next colossus, so I'm not really exploring much. I really
don't think there is anything to explore for anyway. Sure,
the game is huge, but there isn't anything to gain from
riding around on the horse while not going to a sequential
part of the game.

I still love it though. And from what I've read on gamefaqs,
on the messageboard section, there are some replay additives
once you beat the game.

I just finished F.E.A.R.. It's very short. Only a few hours
of play and I don't concider myself an experienced gamer
yet.
I must say that generally I'm not very impressed. Like qrter
said, it has a great implemetation of bullet-time/slo-mo
which makes the battles one of the (if not the) most
spectacular in history, but it lacks in almost every other
department.
The graphics engine is very good. Very realistic smoke
effects, particles and stuff. It runs pretty smooth in
800x600 with all details even on my dated system (Rad9600Pro
and AMD2500+). This said, I must say that the engine's power
was completely wasted. Unless you are in a middle of a fight
the lack of environmental detail is shocking. The dull
interiors look no better than in Max Payne, and like in Max
Payne, you see a very limited set of furniture and equipment
which is often nonsensically scattered in the rooms.
The labirynthine interiors are also an oddity. It looks like
if the main goal of the architects was to make it harder for
the regular office Joe to get out of work.

I'm also very dissapointed by the horror aspect. It's like
in a very cliched Japanese film. You have: a skinny naked
brunnete with extremely long hair (Ringu), the same girl in
the innocent incarnation ("A Tale of Two Sisters") some
robo-guys... Bleh. I could work if they were consistent with
the design. But the action is so intence and you move so
fast that when you stumble upon a horror sequence, you just
get distracted and irritated instead of scared. The
programmers didn't do a good job with event triggering
either. I often didn't notice what was supposed to be scary
because I was faced the other way. No Doom 3, I tell ya.

On the other hand, the AI makes a very good use of multiple
ways of getting from one place to another and the enemies
often attack you from behind in the middle of a fight.

Hmm, I didn't want to write a review, but this game was a
serious let down for me and it sort off erote itself. Now,
let's hope thing

I have to agree on the length of the game. I normally take
quite a while to play a game, and I finished this one in a
weekend. Half-Life 2 took me about 2 weeks, at the about the
same frequency of play. and that immediately leads to
another point I agree on - the interiors used get boring
very quickly. that was so incredible about HL2 to me - I
spent a LOT of time just looking around, watching the
beautiful design.

I can't see how you could've been disappointed by the horror
aspect if you had played the single player demo. it was
immediately apparent that this part would be a big
cliched rip off. I do however agree that the pacing was
shit. like I said before, it felt like the designers forgot
about the horror stuff and it would suddenly disappear for
levels on levels. however, some of the creepiest parts were
ofcourse the stretches where nothing happened - you
wandering around in deserted offices.

the great thing about the game were the firefights. the word
"kinetic" seems very apt - I haven't seen as lively
firefights like this in ages. this is truly were the game
scores - it might seem like a small thing, but it's just
great.

I also especially liked how the enemy would curse - this may
sound quite silly, but it was actually refreshing to
hear the enemy scream "SHIT!" and "FUCK!" when I would come
round a corner, guns-a-blazin'.

the story wasn't great, and already an add-on has been
announced, for the autumn of 2006, directly moving on from
the ending of the game.
