file sharing for .nu community

Is it time to create a file sharing community of our own?
The soulseek community is great, but its open nature might
be its downfall.

We're a pretty tight community of folks here, I think there
are enough people to sustain a new registration-only file
sharing server. We should discuss this before we're in panic
mode (i.e. if soulseek dies).

All we really need to get going is someone to lend bandwidth
and a server program. This isn't hard to do, I already run a
private opennap server for a few friends. The problem is
that it is technically a violation of my ISP contract. It's
ok for a few people but get 100-200 people on it and it
would be noticed. Maybe someone with a more forgiving ISP or
at university could run it. I would be willing to lend a
hand in getting the actual server running and could admin on
a regular basis if necessary.

I would say it's best to use the opennap software as the
server, it's actively developed, has good clients on all
platforms, and has a nice chat system based on irc.

But the hardest part I'd say is overcoming general apathy -
soulseek still works, why should I use yet another program?
I don't want to trade with people with private FTP and web
sites, because there is no sense of community there.

What should we do, or should we do anything?

yes, but how? And how do we avoid those nasty legal people
?!?

lol

I can do everything we need on the technical side. We'll
just need people to connect, share, and chat.

I'm not a legal expert, but by keeping the server
registration-only to known members of our community we
should be small enough to be overlooked.

we'll have to call it something like "Free Music? No free
music here ?!"

lol

i think it's great idea. let's go for it :)

one question tho: how does opennap work?

What it would run is up for debate, the opennap server is a
descendant of the original Napster server and should work
really well for our purposes. WinMX and Audiognome are the
main Windows clients, I think.

Limewire is decentralized, we would not need a server if we
decided to go that route. I wouldn't want to do that because
chat abilities aren't that great.

Originally opennap was just an extension to the irc chat
system to allow the server to index files for searching and
sharing. The chat system is pretty much the same as irc.
Soulseek users could figure it out in about 5 seconds.

If you want to see how opennap works, here's the server list. You'll
need an opennap client like WinMX.

one thing came to mind... what happens when all the people
using soulseek/kazaa/winmx etc. realize that your p2p-thing
is a lot better and everybody starts using it... it becames
what you tried to avoid in the first place...

just a thought.

you need to create some kind of security thing so that only
people from this mb can sign up

it?

They'll have to ask for an account on the system to use it.
I'm not sure what the criteria will be for letting people in
- but it certainly won't available for anybody who asks.

If you want to help - what we really need to get started is
a machine on which to host the server (preferably Linux or
*BSD, but Windows would do in a pinch) preferably outside
the USA. Bandwidth requirements are very small.

I have set up a test opennap server for us to use. If you
would like an account on this server, please email me at the
address in my profile. Let me know your aphextwin.nu
username in the email and if you want to keep that nick or
have a different one.

riaa's attention being brought to the mb)...
if it's kept as a close-knit setup then i see no reason for
anything to falter...:D

Since I have a running server at the moment, the best way to
help is to email me saying you want in, and then connect to
the server with the details I send you.

Or if your profile email address is valid, just say you'd
like an account in this thread and I'll send you the info.

Good idea... although I think the actual files shared would
probably be handed round to everyone within a few months...
as long as everyone keeps getting files from other sources
(ie soulseek, kazaa and *shock horror* actual cds) then we'd
be ok... but would it be any different to the aphex.nu room
in soulseek? Like Whale says. Unless there was a certified
REASON for using this file sharing program and not others...
but then you'd end up with jelousy and a mass of newbies
(hate that word) anyway, just like what has occured now
Audiogalaxy has closed.

I'm pissed, by the way.

I was going to suggest you set up a Hotline server where
you've got chat, news and downloads but seeing as you've
already set things up I won't bother you.

Great idea though!!! I'll just have to find a decent Mac
OpenNap program. Can anyone recommend one?

Phatbert 000: it's been a while since I messed with the Mac.
I seem to remember a program called Rapster that worked with
Opennap. There's a newer program called iSwipe that seems to
work with everything.

Netlon Sentinel: You don't have an email address in your
