There are several reasons I chose not to use a soulseek
server. First of all, source code is not available - if nir
tires of working on the server and does not release the
code, it dies. Second, only a Windows client is available -
opennap has clients on all platforms. Third, opennap clients
are more mature and advanced. My opennap client has some
really nice features that soulseek lacks like swarmed
uploads and per-user bandwidth limits.

yeah, agreed, I was wondering about this at the
weekend...probably best if you try & keep the aphextwin.nu
name out of it; especially with all the recent hassles in
the file sharing world...

I guess that anytime you use the aphextwin.nu name for
anything outside the site, you should talk it thru with Phob
first...basically out of poiliteness and also to ensure his
name isn't linked to things inadvertantly...

exactly: since the big crackdown on filesharing has
seemingly begun, perhaps some extra-carefulness should be
applied.

aphextwin.nu has nothing to do with this project.
please, change the project name. i rather not associate this
site with mp3 trading.

It was not my intent to associate this server with
www.aphextwin.nu. The project doesn't have a "name" as
such.

There is a chat room inside the side called "#aphextwin.nu"
(just like soulseek), I will rename it to #aphextwin. The
server itself is called "nutronic" which was just a
temporary name but I will change that as well.

If anyone got this impression I apologize.

it's not a huge problem...but you've always gotta keep in
mind that when this site's name is use externally then it
looks like Phobia is involved...

But major props for seting this up, Inverted....

yeah, it's nothing personal... it's just me being a control
freak... ;-)

i'm always willing to take responsibilities - as long as i'm
actually involved... which I'm not really in this particular
case.

edna is a good idea.

I've set up a similar thing with Apache::MP3. This allows
me to stream my mp3 collection anywhere in the world while I
am travelling. Also I stream over the wireless network at
home to a few old laptops connected to regular home stereo
receivers - instant music pratically anywhere! It's great
stuff.

yours?

offline Inverted Whale from United States Minor Outlying Islands on 2002-06-24 15:06 [#00283186]

Yes, I run an apache web server there. apache::mp3 does seem
to do one cool thing that edna does not - it can downsample
your mp3s so they fit comfortably over a modem. This comes
in handy sometimes.

streaming royalties. :)

Well the chat/file sharing server has been up for a week,
it's time for a little update.

Everything is running as expected - but the main problem has
been that we cannot get enough users on the server to have
any sort of interesting exchange. There have been plenty of
files, though - at one point we had over 200 GB shared.

So where we go from here is really up to everyone with
accounts. We're still taking new people, send me an email if
you want to join up. If anyone has any interesting
suggestions for the direction we want to take, let me know.

Some people have complained about the winmx client, and I
have made some changes to the server to better accomodate
it. Here's a list of other clients you might try:

Java:
Xnap

Windows:
File Navigator
Audiognome

Mac:
iSwipe

Linux/Unix:
lopster
nap

hey - this sounds really cool...even tho i don't understand
it all & am pretty new to much of this, i'd still like to
get involved.
only thing is....i'm hooked up to a LAN and i don't know how
the firewall will affect this - or if it matters?

lemme know, if u can, what the story is.... :¬)

If you remember the original Napster, that's pretty much
what this server is.

As far as firewalls go, it's the same with opennap as with
most file sharing protocols - if you are behind a firewall,
you cannot share with other people behind firewalls.

If you control your firewall, you can usually forward
packets directly through it to your computer on the inside.
This way your computer on the inside of the firewall appears
like it is a real peer on the Internet. This is what I do.

I think you'd get a lot more users if you made the server
public, but that might not be an option for you. if you want
to go that way, I'd be happy to publish the server info on
the soulseek login message as an alternate gathering place
for IDM fans.

I'm not ready to take the server public at the present time.
It might be an option sometime in the future. Thanks for the
offer, I may take you up at that time...

If there are any Mac fans that have signed up for the
opennap server but could not find good client program,
Rapster works for the most part. It allows chat and
download, but not upload. It is abandoned by the authors but
is still usable.

Download Here

Setup:

In General Preferences:

Login: in your email
Password: in your email
check save password
leave email blank
uncheck look for best server before connect

Network:

Default: enter the hostname in my email, minus the ":8888"
at the end
Port: 8888
set connection speed

Set "Files" and "Messages" prefs as necessary.

Hope this helps...
