japan - turkey

0 -1

its a shame... again defense beat attack... (turkey did the
same as spain... I am ashamed of seeing that I dont like
what turkey did...and thats just what spain did)

it was very nice seeing japan in this world cup... their
matches were very enjoyable

i enjoyed how the japanese crowd started screaming even when
a japanese player had the ball miles away from the goal.
they are very enthusiastic, hopefully they will still be
coming to the other matches, even though their side is out

korea - Itlay

do you think the fifa wants korea to pass as they are the
only home-team left?

do you think the referee will maybe prefer korea to win??
can italy be stolen more goals today?

woofer what do you think?

i think the opposite! the fifa hired a shitty referee for
belgium-brazil in order to let brazil go through, imo.
brazil and italy are one of the few favourites and i think
the fifa will do anything to see them go through.

i don't know who the ref for the italy match is, though. is
he any good?

the referee will be byron moreno, according to worldcup.com
(the fifa site). doesn't ring a bell...

he's from ecuador...

i have a bad feeling about this for italy...

well, at least he isn't from benin or maledives or jamaica.
what rediculous policies the fifa has in assigning referees
from those football-wise insignicant countries

well a referee wants to do a good match so the fifa can
count on him, so I dont thin a referee would ever make a
mistake on purposse

except if the fifa wants him to make a mistake (for example,
why the hell did the referee disallow belgium's goal against
brazil??)

apparently this moreno referee has only been referee since
1997...

brazil 1 turkey 1

last minutes... penalty for brazil (why?..it was a fault
like 2 metres out of the penalty area)

yeah...

also in the world cup 4 years ago france were almost too
lucky... i missed the final against brzil cause i was on
vacation, but my friend and i couldn't believe it when we
learned france had beaten brazil 3-0.

france had been so lucky, winning only after penalties in
previous matches, while brazil had been playing superbly
(against holland, for example.

my guess is brazil sold the game. they had to win in 1994
and they did. they didn't need to win in 1998, so they
accepted lots of cash from france.

call me paranoid if you like, but i don't trust the fifa
(sepp blatter) at all...

2-1

korea wins.... or better said...fifa wins

I think they stole the match to italy...italy should have
won... but...

I AM SORRY WOOFER, YOU WERE THE REAL WINNERS FOR ME.

there was an offside that never existed and totti was fired
out for nothing... I am sorry cos really referees have
stolen you this world cup...

man!!! italy ruled for 80 minutes!! they gave it away!

the ref was good, but totti shouldn't have been sent off and
the offside goal wasn't offside after all. again, italy got
robbed...

but the koreans should have finished the job in the minutes
after the equalizer anyway.

woofer, i feel for you, lad :(

You're all great guys and friends...

So what I say may be unpopular BUT I have to say this >

Congratulations to Korea, they kept going despite Italy
defending defending defending so hard and frustrating them
for so long. Panucci really messed up for the equaliser, he
will have nightmares. Vieri then missed an open goal 1
minute later. As for the "Offside" it was SO tight and you
have to trust the linesman in a split second. You can't give
Italy the decision just because they were unlucky against
Croatia. THAT would be corrupt. The referee was excellent.
Italy played a dangerous game of defending after 18 minutes
and it went wrong. Tough on Italy , but to call it a FIFA
conspirasy is hysterical and makes you look slightly
pathetic .

WELL DONE KOREA !!! It is one of the most exciting finishes
ever !

Great finish equal to =

Man United v. Bayern Munich (Barcelona)
Spain v. Yugoslavia (Euro 2000)
Liverpool v. Alaves (UEFA final 2001)
England v Greece (Old Trafford)

I'm amazed ! I had money on Italy to win the world cup but I
don't care because I have just seen a truly classic game !
WOW !! :D

Bad luck woofer, I hope you don't harbour bad feelings ; I
don't think Italy played their best this time and Korea will
probably never play this well again, Its just one of those
days I guess :(

offline Netlon Sentinel from eDe (Netherlands, The) on 2002-06-18 15:39 [#00272636]
Points: 4736 Status: Lurker

strictly, korea didn't have one good chance till they
scored, and even that was a present from panucci.

after that, they deserved the win. sorry for italy, but GO
HIDDINK :)

as for the offside goal, when in doubt, the referee should
always give the attacking player the advantage. that never
happens, sadly...

offline nacmat on 2002-06-18 15:43 [#00272646]

smokehammer, I am very happy for korea, I like this kind of
surprises in football, and I also like teams that never stop
attacking (as korea) but you have to recognise that the
referee was a bit kind with korea (its normal, they are the
home-team)

Man United v. Bayern Munich (Barcelona) I saw that
game...incredible!!

Spain v. Yugoslavia (Euro 2000) I was working in a
restaurant as a waiter and all the stuff were screaming of
happiness all around the tables on the restaurant... it was
great

I wanted to face italy to get revenge from 1994, but no
doubt that in the paper korea is easier, but they have all
the fans support and they never stop running...spain will
have to play much better than with ireland if they want to
pass, but for sure they are easier than italy.

spain will have learned their lesson not to stop attacking
after they score 1-0 (which i'm sure they'll do)

and even if the score is a draw after 120 minutes, the
koreans are extremely lousy at taking penalties :)

things that worry me:

raul may not play

hierro usually commits penalties such as the one he did to
ireland on the last minute (besides less than that will the
referee need to give a penalty to korea)

koreans never stop running

they have lots of fans

they are good and fast, and our defense is slow

they make a strong preasure all over the field and spain is
not doing a great job with the ball movement around the
midfield...so they might make us loose passes

I think Spain must learn from Ireland and Italy.

Spain retreated against Ireland and let them attack in the
second half. They held on to their lead and it was so nearly
fatal.

Italy did exactly the same against Korea, and it WAS fatal.
Italy love to defend a 1 goal lead, but I really think they
should have attacked more, but they brought on defensive
midfielders for attackers (just like Spain did v. Ireland)

SO. I want to see Spain attack Korea, down the left. Down
the right. Through the middle. Not 1 or 2 players, but 4,
5, and 6. And if Spain score, they should try for more goals
and be brave. If you just try to sit back on a lead, you get
what you deserve .. an equalizer.

But who knows what next ? Spain v. Germany semi-final ? It
could even be Korea v. USA ! :D

the koreans do not score or create opportunities easily.

they do indeed never stop running, but they have been doing
so for the past 4 matches, i bet they're gonna be tired soon

if it's gonna be korea-usa i'm going to emigrate to timbuktu
;)

spain had better deliver the goods this time or korea are
going to run with it again!

the way brazil have been playing, especially against
belgium, they are going out against england, who have way
more team spirit.

as for senegal-turkey, i don't care much, they both have my
sympathy. turkey looks more solid, though

OK nacmat, here's my view>

Spain are at their best when they have the ball central in
their opponents half, with players making angled runs. A
quick one-two, a diagonal pass , a slide-pass to unlock the
defence... Raul is the most "Deft" player in the
tournament..he 'thinks' movement and knows instinctively
about space; Lineker was similar for England. So Spain
should put 5 in midfield and squeeze the game in the middle.
If it gets strung out and there is space in the middle,
Korea have lots of energy and can out-run Spain.

I honestly think Raul is the best player in that game, and
Korea know that too. But Raul MUST be supported more, he
needs Valeron to step up and assist him more. Maybe even
consider Tristan with Valeron and Raul because of the
Deportivo connection which was so good, (although not so
good recently). But Morientes will stay because he has a
good head , and understands Raul well.

It will be hard, because I think Korea are fitter and have
more running, but I have noticed that they make mistakes
with passes when there is no pressure. Spain have to be
brave and give Raul men to play off in the last third of the
pitch and they will win, but unless they are brave, then I
favour Korea.

Honest chances = Spain 55% Korea 45%

Spain knew they were lucky and won't want to make it so hard
this time.... Korea are acting already like they won the
cup, so that should play into Spains' favour.

prediction > 2-2 > penalties 4-3 to Spain :D
