Oversteps- Initial Impressions

I've had occasion to listen to this album properly 4 times
now.
my initial impressions track by track:

01. r ess- Possibly my favorite tune all around. Love the
build up, and tension/release type explosions of sound once
the beat starts. Really down the with assortment of sounds
used to make the beat here. Great intro, way better than
altibzz.

02. ilanders- Really Good. Think I hear some sounds from pro
radii/steels in here. All elements; percussion, sawy bass,
foreground blippy melody and smooth ambience really all flow
together as one. Reminds me a bit of IV VV IV VV VIII from
Draft, but with more going on. (I would point out that the
leak seems to play this track twice in a row.)

03. known(1)- Beautiful melody to start.. mutant alien
harpsichord or something. Great harmony as it builds a
little bit. Then a high pitched dying computer alien comes
on and starts to sing. whoa. I love the broken sound, like
strange graffiti over the other elements of the track.

04. pt2ph8- I love this one too. There's something in the
melody, especially at the start, that reminds me of the
music in Monkey Island 2, which is some of my favorite shit
ever. This is the best of the beat-less tracks. Ending is
"lush," as some of the Brits like to say.

05. qplay- Melody in the beginning reminds me of the theme
song to Star Trek: Next Generation, a little. This track
might take me awhile to "get." The individual parts are good
but the whole of it hasn't quite clicked with me yet. Bass
might just be a tad bit "noisy" for my taste too. I think I
will warm up to it though.

06. see on see- Underwater harpsichord played through a
prism. It loses it's structure a bit in the middle, but it
heals nicely by the end. Good stuff.

07. Treale- Yes. Even on their special underwater alien
baroque album, ae still return to their dark mistress: the
hip hop beat. I especially like the base-melody that syncs
with the drums here. That snare that comes in eventually is
awesome. I don't know how they do it, but ae consistentl

I don't know how they do it, but ae consistently comes up
with the dopest sounding snare drums, period. It's one of
the main reasons they sound so fuckin' sick. Contender for
my favorite tune on the album, so far.

08. os veix3- Cool track. Actually reminds me of a lot of
Proem last few albums. I like the little bursts of hiss,
like a water faucet being turned on and off. Melody is nice,
a little more subdued in this track than in others.

09. O=0- This one reminds me a little of Amber in the
melody. I enjoy it but it will need more time to absorb I
think.

10. d-sho qub- Another hip hop jam. Melody almost sounds
like some weird Hawaiian jingle. Autechre jammin' with
Jamarr on the beach, with monkeys dancing- everyone's gettin
live right here. Beat is slammin'. I love the strange delay
going on under the drums. Epic space chant towards the end.
The camera takes us from the beach, slowly into the sky,
past the atmosphere into space, and out of the solar system.
Yeah girl.

11. st epreo- This is the most quaristicey track on the
album by far. I need more time with this one. Good sounds
though.

12. redfall- The metallic melody on top of everything
doesn't really hit the right spots for me, but the ambience
and everything going on in the background is killer. I
expect I will warm up to this one.

13. krYlon- This is my least favorite on the album, and I
don't really think that will. It meanders too much. There
are a few autechre tracks that do this (Bine immediately
comes to mind), and I just never really get into them. The
sounds are good, the structure just doesn't appeal to me.

14. Yuop- Good tune to end on. Sounds a little like Amber +
Quaristice melded together, until it starts to disintegrate
into broken data. Nice.

13. krYlon- This is my least favorite on the album, and I
don't really think that will *change.

i'm quite sorry to say that as a diehard autechre fan - but
i don't like it (of course assuming that the whole leak is
original).

i have to admit that it is a fine piece of art but it just
simply doesn't suit me.

it has too much atonality, weird scaling and random notes
for me personally. that's actually exactly the thing why i
still hate (or rather just don't listen to) confield.
ilanders for example has this high pitch sqeal in the back
which destroys the whole track for me. and there is
something like this in every track.

i listened to it twice and somehow i can't point out some
moment that i really like.

"it has too much atonality, weird scaling and random notes
for me personally."

I totally get that. That used to be a problem with me and
lp5, actually. I don't know what's changed, but somehow it
clicked for me and now it just works.

lp5 was tiesto compared to oversteps. it was actually my
first encounter with autechre and i loved ot from the very
beginning.

i tend to not like albums that use off-scales or other
"weird" or even algorhythmic note progression on the
melodies.

the problem is that i find these very cold, unnatural and
totally unhuman because there isn't any mood or feeling
incorporated but just pure math. and i guess the whole point
is to make it "sound right".

there is also this thing that imho the boys from autechre
aren't really that "musical" in the sense when you would
compare them to jazz-artists for example. in fact the parts
that i think they recorded "by hand" with a keyboard or
manually typing in notes tend to sound very childish and
awful. like the bassline in pro radii after the "break".

it sounds a bit forced to me. somehow back in the days they
were ok with 4 bar - melodies and everyone was happy and
fine.

Here's where my confusion starts.
Let's say you were an established artist (and you were
autechre).
You created some of the greatest album in your career, up to
lets say.. Untilted.

Would you released this after that? Would you release this
crap after making masterpieces like draft, confield, lp5,
ep7, chiastic slide, etc. Would you? Seriously.

No. I'm talking about the 1 track promo with the whole
album.
The first fake leak by altered was actually better than
this.

I haven't listened to the whole thing, just one track or
something, but to me it sounded miles better than the fake
leak. Your reaction was pretty much what I thought after
listening to parts of the fake leak (which after Quaristice
seemed plausible to me).

I would also like some confirmation on this. What makes this
new leak legit? Is it the fanboy ears of ae? Or was the leak
actually from a good source. All I read last night was omg
omg it's here *click*.

heh, maybe they were upset lot of us weren't content with

cause I'm liking quaristice more each second now. I want to

Hi Gwely. A bit before the leak turned up, see on see and
ilanders were premiered on a german radio station. So those
two are legit for sure. The rest could be fake but my fanboy
ears tell me otherwise ;p

sorry some of you guys don't like it :( Immediately I find
it more interesting than Quaristice (all versions). I can't
get enough Treale right now.
