agreed w/this
ilanders isn't bad it just sounds like 'so, standard autechre procedure then', they've done tracks that are similar in structure and texture in the past and probably better. the only thing that makes it more interesting to me is the sort of weirdly upbeat melodic part that comes in around minute 2 or something, which nearly sounds like a chorus line of all things and is kool for them. not a bad track just a bit bland agred 100percent.
once track 3 hits the real personality of the album comes through and it sounds a bit like plaid and the black dog being fed through autechre or something. not that exactly but sorta. whichfucking owns IMO

first of all plaid sounds absolutely nothing like arovane, arovane wouldn't know how to write a modulating chord structure if it were written out to him as an essay.
SECONdly, considering people used to say arovane ripped off autechre in paritcular amber (which is mostly not even accurate), then autechre can make pleasant sounding music if they wanted to, arovane didnt invent this concept. it sacrifices absolutely no qualities that make autechre good in the first place.
besides i think the gross misconception of autechre being futurist masters of all things technological is burned into the heads of far too many people. so much of mid-to-late 90s had this boundry pushing idealism and autechre were like the poster boys for that. and i can guarantee you it was not their intention.
i think sadist/qrdl/some other guy i forgot/ made some valid points though without just complaining that autechre had more obvious melody, the issue being whether or not that melody is any good. personally i think it's perfect and references all the right things, but this is wherepersonal taste comes in. like a b1otch.

fair enough, i agree with that sentiment actually i just think this album is very boring for an Autechre album futuristic or not. I would rate it as probably their weakest full length LP

The thing i have always liked about AE is their ability to write really dark music but manage to make it non threatening, this sort of music encurages us to work with it; that's why when you first played Untilted it was a big mess, after a while it fits together so satisfyingly .
However, I think what we are hearing in oversteps is a personal insight of 2 creative minds communicating with sound. I don't think they are trying to show off or push the evelope, but I can't complain... if you really want to hear something groundbreaking and you can't satify this by other artists, then try to make it yourself!
I wonder if that black circle is a magnified 'full stop' ?

there's a track or two which rusty sounds my ears dislike. it's some kind of strange timber i've heard in quaristice already, it's difficult to listen to. other moments are killer instead. needs more listens in order to decide on the purchase, i bought quaristice flac's blindly cos of the hype and it didn't turn out a fav. maybe Oversteps could be a 'medium' in that sense. jesus christ i'm all wet

its a good cd for what it is, in some aspects. some of the tracks sound like melodic idm from 2000 from america, and other tracks are great.
its not the cd i wanted from them, but im glad they're doing their thing.
this might be because lately ive been appreciating non melodic percussive stuff even more than i did 5 years ago..
