what a piece of shit album. if its legit.. im done.
finished. i am so disappointed that its increased my
depression. i was actually excited about this.. whats to be
excited about now? they're just driving nails in the coffin.
they retired years ago, anything that comes out of them now
will NOT ever be what you want it to be. they've got lazy.
and im sick of people saying it has to grow on me. i
instantly fell in love with their earlier stuff, because it
was genius. if they make something you have to try to like,
then thats the ae fanboy in you trying to justify a piece of
dogshit. fucking admit it, they spent more time, effort,
hours, blood and sweat producing surripere than probably 10
entire tracks on oversteps. i wont even listen to it again,
cause i pray to fuck this is fake. i want a blend. i want
confields alien, i want drafts futuristic cyberpunk, i want
gantz eps insane algorithms, i want ep7s squelchy static, i
want tri repetaes crack addict beats, i want lp5s fun
melodies, all in 1. am i ever going to get that from
autechre? no. its been 5 years now. 2 studio albums,
including alot of online ep quadrange shit. quari offered a
few gems, but it was never an album in my mind. it was a
period where they were dumping everything they did directly
after untilteds tour material. THEY were supposed to make up
for it with oversteps. not this melodic shit. ive heard
better melodic styles like this from unsigned artists on
random soundclick stations for christs sake. i give up on
ae. thats the end of the road now. its just unexpected..
youve got netlabel peeps now churning out the old lush
style. then you have the pioneers being lazy and releasing
it. it is like insulting ae's fanbase. im pretty damn
fucking sure they know what their fans want, ofcourse they
read up on the reception. they probably read that we want
more con-draft style, and they're like 'ugh.. that took so
long to make, that was hard.. all that effort.. too lazy.'
suck a dick autechre.

its a good and necessary shift for autechre, and if you dont
like it you are probably more of an autechre fan than you
are a fan of the concept of music as a whole, and for this
you are stupid and should die horribly within a cage of
eternal flames that burns your pitiful existence out of
known reality

are we wrong for expecting cyberpunk / complex rhythms /
lush autechre pads and synth stabs ala surripere, and are we
wrong for not liking this synth mayhem baroque stuff?

i am a fan of ae, some might even call me a fanboy, and i
will give this a chance, but sadly, i dont quite understand
what it is they are trying to do. especially on the third
track and beyond.
i think ilanders is an excellent track though.

this is the same thing as bnc Castl was to me for quari, or
fermium for untilted. they go into a weird child like synth
state and i just dont get it.
for me personally i always liked the more srs deeper stuff
like see on see, ilanders, surripere, uviol, hub, tewe.. and
in the old stuff i liked the desolate cold yet warm and lush
moods of a dystopian robot future..

this album resonates with me on some levels, but is it what
i wanted from AE? not really. i wanted more of the old
stuff. im happy they are doing what they want to do, but to
me this just isnt up to par with the old stuff.

Its ironic the album cover has a big black hole on it,
considering how bright and light the music is itself.

Sounds like an alien church in a desert covered with snow,
reflecting light everywhere.

Best Autechre experience I have had in almost 7 years.

Great job guys...

yeah i certainly don't. i guess i should go back to having
preconceived notions to how an artist should function
creatively, therefore when they release something that
sacrifices none of the qualities that make them good in the
first place, i can throw a fit and write up a long stupid
reason as to why their stylistic shift doesn't sit well with
me because if autechre doesn't fit into the mold of what i
assigned them then it's not autechre.
huaur????????????????????????

Autechre (/ɔːˈtɛkər/
aw-TEK-ər)

music that has hidden dialogue in the form of predicate
nouns, question & answer clauses and repeated motifs that
speaks to me and my ilk, like so much music that i have
bested, alone.

if you're not 'with' autechre then one of

i)you are worthwhile, anyone's while specifically who's is
anyone's guess
ii)you wouldn't claim not to be a contender
iii) you haven't heard it yet, but take our word it really
is quite tuneful

It's a good thing for artists to stick with their initial
style, and evolve it alright? I can always listen to
biosphere and be mesmerized, in awe of the beautiful
simplicity. I can listen to bad sector and feel totally
cybernetic, dopplereffekt's neo-kraftwerk space music,
bola's particular choice of sounds, the list goes on and on,
hundreds of artists. so is it really that anal of me to say
that autechre's radical shift is unpleasant? no, it's not.
so fuck off any of you that think i'm being a wad.

but AUtehcre is always about radical shifts… . within
their tracks and between albums. and actually one main
element of why their music works so well is 'breaking
expectations'. you're fooling yourself, all you need to do
is realize you have to look at this release from a different
perspective.

I'm well aware of that. I know each ae album offers
something completely new from the last. The problem is that
their recent work hasn't showed much musical effort when
you're talking about an artist that has totally brain fucked
you with complexity. It's about as weird as steve roach
suddenly doing an idm album, you've got this group of
grassroot hippies pre-ordering expecting some more nomadic
journeys into the abyss as they begin their peyote trip and
whats this? this isn't steve roach.

I think Sadist makes the most sence. Autechre are just not
very good with melodies. It's very apparent on the track
that starts around 1 hour in. Actually, all the synth tracks
that, I assume, were supposed to resemble charpsichord
improvisations sound very forced. Not unlike the output of
the more ambitious bedroom idm artists I heard and very much
like SP's bass solos.
And it's not like they were better with melody in the past,
this is actually the reason why I can't stand their
pre-Confield work. I just think that what Autechre does best
is sound sculpture and harsh experimentation still kept in
confines of entertaining music. This is why they are the
stars and not Richard Devine, who can make astonishing sound
but I never had a desire to listen to his album for the
second time.
However, there are some great moments on Oversteps, many
more than on Quaristice. Ilanders is my favourite at the
moment.

Does anybody really think that an artist should listen to
what his/her fanbase expects? I applaud if Autechre don't
give a fuck. You have the opportunity to listen to the music
before the purchase (thank the internet), so don't buy it if
you don't like it. If you see not conforming to your
expectations as spitting in your face than you better get
used to wiping it off for the rest of your life.

i really like it - it's a welcome change of pace for me. in
regards their melodies i always thought that one of ae's
strong suits are that they aren't trained musicians so their
melodies can be all over the place inferring loads of weird
chords rather than more predicable fare. it's guided by
their ears and taste rather than generic music theory rules
imo.
