the last samurai - 7/10 - note, i give it a 7 based on
outstanding cinematography, sets, costumes, action, and the
absolutely terrific japanese actors. tom cruise can go take
a leap.

solaris (1972) - 6/10 - my score would have been higher but
i was greatly bothered by the impression that the
translation job was atrocious. otherwise, my score would
have been higher.

normally I don´t like rock at all but this movie rocks!

it´s a feel good movie I guess, or it is the wine that made

Butterfly Effect 2/10
..I thought this was a bad film which they made incredibly
(and unnecessarily) harsh to distract people from noticing
the massive plot holes and the fact that despite stating the
Chaos Theory at the start the film actually has nothing to
do with it.

Eternal Sunshine 8/10
Kill Bill Vol 2 8/10

it'd be cool if you could elaborate on your opinions on this
film and on Hitchcock in general... i've always been kind of
lukewarm on the man myself... but i always ranked vertigo as
one of his better films... (the only one that i really
really like is probably rope)

hmm... so "boring" isn't bad by definition? sounds like the
kind of metaphysical debate that ought to go on at this time
of night... :P

i'd say that, personally, any movie i enjoy is not boring
(and yet, somehow i feel as though i could come up with an
exception)... something about it holds my attention,
intrigues me, makes me feel, etc.

it certainly isn't always the plot (which seems to be the
fixation of most filmgoers i know, despite the fact that
most plots have been recycled ad infinitum for
centuries...), but it is always something...

gus van sant made gerry and elephant with the intention of
being absolutely boring, and they're great movies.

if that matters. i just have a thing for beautiful
boring-ass art films.

if you can't find it locally, your best chance is just to
wait until it comes to a local art house... it made the
rounds not long ago, and i'm sure it will again soon (it is
a cult classic, after all)

i also have a thing for "boring-ass art films" :P... in fact
pretty much all of my favourite films most people would
consider boring... but they aren't boring to me (at least as
far as what i understand the word "boring" to mean), and i'm
sure they aren't boring to you either...
Gerry is so fucking gorgeous... and it isn't just that... i
thought the acting was fantastic, and the writing (however
little of it there was) was very good...

Hmm, I'm really not convinced of the merits of Hitchcock.
With the exception of Rope I have found all of his films to
be quite tedious. Loooong stretches of nothing happening
just doesn't work for me unless there's overriding artistic
merit, such as with Lynch's Eraserhead.

I can appreciate Hitchcock films in the context of their
importance to the history of cinema. Much of what he did was
ahead of it's time and he pioneered a lot of the techniques
that filmmakers use so regularly today, but as a viewer I'm
not primarily a scholar of film history, just someone who
wants to watch something entertaining and/or artistic.
Hitchock fails on both counts.

Don't Look Now 8.4/10
Dreams 8.3/10

both films were very well done visually for the most part...
Don't Look Now is definitely a pretty cool kinda
quasi-horror mystery film... it really captures a nice
vibe... for some reason it reminds me of the Ninth Gate
before it starts to suck at the very end...
Dreams shows just how insanely masterful Kurosawa was at
speaking through film towards the end of his life... every
once and a while characters or dialogue doesn't quite work,
but it's more than compensated for in the gorgeous shots and
sounds that surround these missteps...
