There came a point at around half-way where the
flash-forwards had already sign-posted most of what was
going to happen in the rest of the film and I found my
interest evaporating.

All the acting was great, as was the screenplay, but I do
have to question the director allowing the final third to be
such a leaden affair and I don't think his structuring of
the film worked as well as he perhaps hoped.

The Last Emperor (Directors Cut) - 4/5

excelent film, though the Chinese speaking in English kind
of annoyed me.

Fog of War 4/5

Scary and informative documentary, I didn't realise how much
Japan was bombed in WWII, something like 59% of the Country
was destroyed BEFORE they dropped 2 nuclear bombs on them.
Hundreds of thousands of civilians killed. Talk about
overkill!

Dune 5/5?? you've got to be joking? I LOVE David Lynch films
but this is by far his worst, its has its merits but is far
from perfect. The book would be the only version of Dune to
get 5/5. I'd probably rate the Lynch movie 3.5/5. Have you
seen the TV series?

My Little Eye 4.5 - Interactive game on the DVD makes it
worth checking out, cool soundtrack - Flood (ex Killing
Joke) worked on it. It has a disk with deleted scenes that
add more to the story. Alan Greenspan is a producer on the
film :)

Resurrection 3.5 - DVD Serial killer..Christopher Lambert
-the detective, the director from Highlander made this
flick. Its kind of dated when you compare it to CSI.similar
to Seven in the filming techniques used.

Stuck On You - 0.5 Yuck. Saw movie for free and still wished
I had walked out in the first 5 minutes. Matt Damon is not a
comedian in the worst movie the Farrelly brothers have made.
Just dont bother watching it.

Primus - Animals should not act like People DVD with CD
unreleased tracks 5.5 Features home videos, animations,
music clips, bootlegs of live shows. The original drummer
plays on the CD.

Would love to know what you think of Happy Together - Not
had a chance to see it yet.

Hana bi though is probably my favorite film ever - Although
I didn't really appreciate it until I'd seen it a few
times... Good film to watch alone I always thought..

I've just finished Chungking Express - Good film, possibly
not quite what I was expecting - I was expecting something a
little more art-core - Nice though - Will have to watch it
again.

Best of the bunch though... And a real suprise! Was ASHES OF
TIME - Wong Kar Wai's swordplay epic...

Some of the best cinematography I've ever seen!

Utterly compelling story-line that doesn't really go
anywhere or do anything, yet still manages to touch you on
so many levels.

One of Leslie Cheungs' last movies - Mind blowingly great
actor - I often see him as a Chinese Johnny Depp, with
double the charisma and triple the talent (and I'm a big JD
fan!).

Ashes of Time blew me away - There's so many scenes I rewind
over and over again just for the editing and photography...
Great feel to the whole movie - Feels very old and very
modern at the same time..

Love the minimal soundtrack too - Sounds very old - Chinese
percussion arrangements over really strings with that sort
of synthetic analog quality.

Another film I didn't really appreciate until a second
viewing.

Have you seen Zatoichi? Its the first film i've seen
directed by Kitano and i was extremely impressed, he's one
talented director. Loved the soundtrack too. I'm going to
watch Dolls by him next, its the film he did before
Zatoichi.

Ashes Of Time i've often thought of downloading but i've
been put off by the negative reviews i've seen for it. It
seems to be a film you either love or hate, usually i like
those kind of films :) I'll probably get Ashes of Time next
though, it has lots of my favourite asian actors in it.

Still haven't watched Hana-bi, i'm busy with college work at
the moment so I can't watch many films for now.

I really loved Chungking Express, I can't wait to see WKW's
new film 2046, its been in production for years but it
should finally come out this year.

I'll let you know how Happy Together is when I see it, I've
also got 'As Tears go by' to watch, I think its the first
WKW Maggie Cheung starred in.

I found Zatoichi to be very disappointing. I concede that
much of this was because I was very tired in the cinema, so
didn't have a great deal of patience, but it did seem pretty
tedious for long stretches.

I also had dofficulty following who was who for much of the
time and gave up caring eventually.

Good fight scenes and some comedy. Takeshi himself is always
cool too, but overall I can only give this 2/5.

Hana-bi 5/5

not many films get 5/5 from me but this film is amazing, the
best film i've seen for a while... really effected me. Films
don't get much better than this.

Fantastic!

It truely is a masterpiece!

You should definetly like Ashes of Time if you liked the
minimalism and style of Hana-bi.

My friend's just brought over a copy of Zatoichi from Japan
- Am very keen to see it!

Sonatine's my other favorite Takeshi movie - And maybe Scene
by the Sea, although I've not seen that one for a while.

This Japanese movie Blue Spring looks like a must see -
Having a hard time tracking down a copy though!

The Trip - 4/5

Caught it on Film Four the other night - Probably the best
film about taking LSD ever made!

Tough to rate - I feel urged to give it a 5 - But a film
like this is impossible to rate objectively - It would seem
like 90mins of nonsense to most non drug-takers I'm sure.

and nobody even thinks of breaking some fucking window.

only the first, which was the best novel I read. I
understand it's a flawed movie, that's because they had to
compress the entire story in one movie, but I found the
Lynch's vision on the book to be how I envisioned it in my
mind. I loved the casting job on this one.

interesting article: Dune - what went wrong?

dune

I dont agree with everything there, I think Lynch made the
best film possible at the time and its by no means a bad
film. Really, who could make a good Dune film? The TV series
isn't brilliant and that runs for something like 8 hours.

5/5 makes it seem like you saw it as a perfect film, not
flawed.

I liked Lynch's version though, no-one else could have made
it that well.

I'm in the mood to re-read Dune now, I read it once when I
was younger and didn't quite 'get it'.
