Ravensholm was very, very cool.
the gravity gun proves yet again that the physics engine is the real star of this game.

yeah but it also kinda sucks knowing that they can pinpoint your location after you kill one of them,
the only thing that could make this game any better is if they implemented a 'sneaking/hide in shadows' option.

(1/2) So I beat HL2 singleplayer... after only 2 days. The period up until playing this game was the worst period of my life, as the game took about 8 hours to finally install due to Steam being the giant retarded piece of shit that it is. Luckily I felt a lot better once I started playing the game. I was incredibly impressed with the graphics/physics/gameplay (I mean, who isn't?) but, rather than talk about all the great things that everyone has mentioned a hundred times, I'd like to talk about the things I didn't enjoy from my 2nd dose of Gordon Freeman. Once I realized how ridiculously short the single player campaign is, and how unrewarding the ending is, I stopped seeing stars from the amazing graphics and physics and started to think about the actual shortcomings of the game. I sincerely feel like something big was missing from this game. The storyline didn't grip me at all like the first one did. I'm not sure why, but I never really felt like the mission I was on was extremely vital, or even urgent. I don't know, but to me it seems Valve relied on visuals rather than storyline to hook the player this time around. Also, the fact that you STILL cannot go prone, or shoulder (aim down the sight) the weapons is a major flaw in my opinion. If any of you have played Call of Duty or Chrome among a few others, you also probably have noticed how strange it feels to play a shooter that doesn't allow you to aim down the gun like you're actually planning on hitting your target. I mean, honestly, no person with any experience firing weapons runs around hip-shooting all the time; it's just far too inaccurate. While this may seem like nitpicking, I feel that for a game that was trying so hard to emulate the real world, the simple ability to not lie down to take cover or shoulder guns makes the environment still seem unnatural, almost forced.

(2/2) In that same respect, I was also disappointed by the game's almost total lack of open-ended level design; for the majority of the game, there was only one way to go or one way to compelte a certain objective. That did not sit right with me at all. With the physics in the game being what they are, where is the ability to destroy/change the terrain????? I want to blow holes in walls to get around the CP defenses rather than just charge them head on every friggin time. One of the things I was so impressed about from seeing the demo movies was how much all of the NPC's seemed to react to everything Gordon does. For example, stare at Alyx for too long and she'll call you on it. However, every attempt I made at this in game, the NPC's would just take 10 steps in the opposite direction and utter an almost frightened "sorry Gordon." Yet again, I felt as though the environment wasn't very receptive to the player, which detracted slightly from the game experience. All in all, Half-life 2 is a great game; hell it's the best game I've played in a long time, but for how fucking long I had to wait (6 years since the release of Half-life), I really thing Valve could have, SHOULD have done more. I don't think making the single player last longer than 2 days is too much to ask for, either. My Rating: 8/10

I'd like to take a minute to explain why I think the storyline is a piece of dogshit. The plot of the original Halflife centered on a warp between two dimensions being created and lifeforms being sucked through to earth, while the the science team tries to undo the damage they have done, and the government special forces try to cover up the entire thing, which includes aiming their sights at Gordon Freeman. At the end of the game when you kill the Nihilanth and the G-man takes you on the train ride and tells you you'll be working for him from now on, it sucks for you a bit, but the game still feels complete. This time around, it seems that killing the "mastermind" of the alien invasion has done absolutely jack shit and now the "Combine" are in control. Not only are none of the alien attackers (besides headcrabs which I don't consider invaders because they were just lifeforms that got sucked through like everything else) enemies in Half life 2, only one of them, the Vortigaunts is still around, and somehow they now speak perfect English rather than alien grunts and are on YOUR SIDE. **SPOILER** What's worse, even once you beat the game, you never even get to find out who the "Benefactors" of the Combine are, how they are still in power even after you killed the Nihilanth and about 400,000 bad aliens in the first installment, where the Combine came from, or why their technology is so markedly different from the Alien technology on Xen in the first game. And if all that wasn't bad enough, Dr Breen is the only character you can be certain is a bad guy, but Valve doesn't even have the fucking decency to let you see him die, as time is frozen by the ever-annoying G-man just as his protective-orb thing is about to plummet to the ground....

(Continued) Or is it really plummeting? maybe it's making a fast though controlled decent and hes actually just going to retreat to the next Citadel and start causing problems all over again. What I'm getting at is that the problem with the story in HL2 is that the little plot it does have is too convoluted to be rewarding, for me at least. I just hope some killer single player mods are made, because the as capable as the Source engine is, it can't hide a game's lack of believable story.

The game was far too short, I think they were probably forced to get it on the market before it was finished. It was aesthetically pleasing and fun for the 2 days that it took me to finish it. I do not believe it lives up to the original though.
Certainly not "the best game ever" or whatever these junk magazines are saying.

Just finished it too. Yes, it was a short game, but as Ophecks said, longevity isn't something I expect from an FPS, and I have played much shorter. Yes, the plot was thin, the ending disappointing and there were parts that felt overscripted, but I still think the positive aspects of this game, the unbelievably realistic physics engine, the best graphics I have ever seen, the sense of complete immersion these things give you from the moment you first take a look around the first level, outweigh the negative. I still think the game marks the beginning of a new era, the Source engine is a massive achievement and I'm really looking forward to seeing what people will do with it in the future.

"“Havok has been working with Valve for almost three years to deliver breakthrough physical gameplay. Havok 2, launched at GDC 2003 incorporates all that we have learned from working with each other, particularly in the area of character control and ragdolls”, said Dr. Steven Collins CTO, Havok.
it would seem they have been working together, influencing and helping eachother along, instead of the one just using the other.

What's the multiplayer/online/steam functionality of HL2 like?
I've got a copy, and the game's fucking awesome (been playign it all weekend instead of doing work - heh, my eyes are all bloodshot), but, ahem, yes. I'll end up buying it anyway, but it'll be further justified if the online capability makes it all that much more worth it.

HL2 has no online form of itself.
they packed a reworked Counter-strike with HL2, based on the same Source engine.
it shouldn't be too long before modders have made an online version of HL2.
the plus points of HL2 on the Steam system is that patches get downloaded automatically and you can basically download the games you purchased on any computer that you install Steam on and log in under your account.
Friends is a service within Steam with which you can see if you're friends are playing any Valve game online (and you can talk to them, even if they're in-game) and where they are playing that game, etc.
so you're using the cracked HL2? apparently Gabe Newell (head honcho at Valve) has said that this cracked version is a crafty ruse by Valve to catch and ban people from playing their games:
"We're running a bit of an experiment. We're keeping track of the accounts that do this and will be shutting them off."
(from here)
this, ofcourse, sounds very improbable. how this could be technically possible eludes most of us, seeing as this crackz0red version will hardly be played online, now will it?

you can actually play HL2 online in itself, just create a server through console and have people connect to your ip - you can do deathmatch with custom maps - or even work through the actual game in a sort of cooperative sort of way.
if you check some hl2 forums or search on google, you can find the commands to start a server.
we did this at a lan last night, very fun stuff :)

Hey, I didn't say anything :-)
And that's just a rumour anyway. Valve wouldn't crack their own game, however, it is possible they're tracking popular torrents of the crack. This means they can do two things:
a) Keep track of the IP's that are downloading from the torrent
b) Keep track of the Steam usernames that try to login with a cracked HL2.
However, a is stupid because lots of ISP's use dynamic IP's, and to track down individuals this way is an incredible amount of work as they can't actually find out theirselves. b is also stupid because the proper crack disables steam completely and you never even /need/ to login.
I'm going to buy it anyway, even though I've almost finished... er, my 'friends copy'. Horribly addictive, should be doing more work instead of playing games. Eyes are bloodshot as hell /again/ - I think this is the most captivating game I've ever played.
