never signed me.

ilkae has a new album in the works; if they don't release it
through m3rck and it's only available through their website,
please support it..

this is pretty sad.

well that's not hard to guess.. probably takes a lot of
money time from the people comprising it, and they're just
tired of it. I mean you can guess from the nature of the
teardown that it wasn't insanely lucrative.

Damn!!!
I heard the fucking rumours and I hoped they were false :(

M3rck is without any doubt my 2nd best label of the world, I
even own 4 shirts of them, how sick is that...

As things are now I own 11% of their catalogue and I hope to
make it to at least 20%.

I hope there will be a new Landau, Esem, Helios and Proem
among the upcoming 19 releases.

"We have many reasons for this" I wonder what
reasons.

ESEM has a new/upcoming and FREE MP3
release coming out on 10/13 with kahvi.org

Here's the press-release from KAHVI...

----------------------------------------------
Esem, acclaimed idm and electronica artist has
been missed lately. Nothing new appearing on
the numerous labels he's been associated with.
No reviews on websites - apparently he's
disappeared into the ether, never to be heard
from again. Silence.

Until now that is. Kahvi Collective can now excitedly
reveal that Esem has something new up his sleeve.
And this is something great ;) Yes, on October 13th,
Kahvi Collective, pioneering netlabel, will release,
completely free of charge, a new Esem album -
consisting of 13 tracks of 100% new material,
never before released and never before heard.

The tracks will be available as a stream from the
website from the 10th of October so you can whet
your appetite, and then made available on the 13th
as a podcast and ogg vorbis format direct download.

For more information as it happens, subscribe to
the Kahvi Collective RSS Feed on the website.

Hey, guys, they have at least another year to go before they
call it quits. And they still have plans to finish off 50
vinyl and 50 cd, so there is a lot of stuff still to come.

penexpers: Skam was never as good as merck.

well, a most of the music which has surprised and pleased me
recently (last few months) is from merck, so I have
respect.

in particular, merck mix 2 is fucking ridiculous, but I've
already said that.. even JAroen recommends it, oooooohh

Okay, fine, I'll admit that I don't know Merck well enough
to judge. All I know is Proem, Adam Johnson, and Ilkae.
Ilkae I like. Adam Johnson, a couple good songs but overall
I don't like. And I tried to listen to Proem but to me it
sounded generic and boring.

if you have a chance get merck mix 2. Due to how much I
liked that I also nabbed mix 3, which isn't as good, but
still nice. Note that I still most prefer things that are
primarily tonic and melodic, so I'm definitely not preaching
that this is your most 'cutting edge idm', which is such a
retarded term that it sounds like an insult, so I shouldn't
have said it.

but what I can say concretely is that that mix has lots of
different flavors of that breed of electronica, and it
doesn't get that boring. always finding new tracks I like
in it.

I'm going to make a HUGE fucking purchase from them soon,
because honestly I've had a much higher signal/noise ratio
with what of theirs I've checked out then anything in the
last -two-years- (the last such music binge being when I
found autechre.. which I sadly don't listen to very much
these days).

I will listen to the mix, do you have it on soulseek?
I'm getting into The Hafler Trio right now, it's great and
he's got a lot of material. I'll probably spend much more
time getting into than I have with autechre.

it should be visible on slsk, I've seen it there.. to double
check, it has 36 tracks, the last one being ilkae-elve.
search for merck mix and maybe that'll get all the hits

Merck brought us Machine Drum, proswell, decepticon, jimmy
edgar, ilkae, mr projectile, and landau. These are just the
ones off the top of my head. Sure a lot of their stuff is
derivative, but for the ammount of crap that most
'underground' electronic labels have produced, there is a
much higher average of gold being released by Merck.

I don't care what most people say about skam. About the only
thing they have going for them is bola.

You guys don't even get it. They were a consistent label
that released a certain kind of music for a specific
audience. Honestly, merck is the only "IDM" label that I
have been regularly happy with. They were also one of the
few labels that had the "download our music if you want, if
you like it then throw us or the artist a couple dollars".
That kind of an attitude is rare among established
underground labels. They were also one of the few that made
sure everything they put out was quality, from the art to
the music. Even if you don't like the music (which is wrong,
I don't see how people can be raving about sublight and
dissing this label - I guess the people into IDM only want
bullshit dsp antics without any soul which is why I am glad
all the vanity labels aren't lasting), you at least have to
respect the attitude.

As well, this wasn't some vanity label that some half rate
IDM icon threw together to saturate the scene like reflex,
mu, skam, sublight, what have you. This was someone
releasing music that they enjoyed.

God, I love Hobbes.

I'm no financial guru but the "download our music if you
want, if you like it then throw us or the artist a couple
dollars
" policy, if that was really the case, probably
didn't help matters.

I really want to make a joke about a full length Koch, and
how much I'd like to get my hands on it and shove it in my
ears.

Whatever. Do you think that it made people more or less
likely to downoad there music? Neither. It was just a cool
attitude. The world needs more labels like that and some of
you guys are stuck on dissing them. This scene sucks. Two of
the more noticable messageboards are stuck spending the
entire time dissing their members and eachother and waxing
intelectual about their girlfriends first names and trying
to piss of the moderators in an attempt to seem edgy. All
the fans are confused and perpetually stuck in this vicious
self indulgent 'me' phase, all the labels seem to be focused
on releasing shitty immitations of whatever albums managed
to sell 200 copies and all the artists that originally were
praised for their innovations are now just releasing the
same albums they did the year before. The soul is gone.
Whatever. If you guys want me to fuck off, then I am going
to fuck off.

Taxi- I'm actually feeling you on this one. Its one of the
most solid, well constructed labels to grace us. And
believe it or not, its not all just icey IDM shit. They
spanned enough to keep it interesting AND their packaging is
top notch. ie- Adam Johnson just for starters. As I said
elsewhere, I hope this doesnt lead to a breakcore monopoly
or anything. I really liked 98% of the stuff they released.
I cant say the same for µ, warp, reflex, skam, sublight,
neo ouija, or schematic.

anyways, merck was an era of my life that in many ways i'm

I first want to start by saying that yes that attitude is
cool. It seems welcoming and is certainly a different
approach.

But your comment about these message boards i would like to
address.

If there was an outstanding output of IDM style music it
would surely get discussed. Find the 80 trillion
analord/untilted whatever threads and you'll see

People are are in need of quality. That comes in two forms
here. Music and Us. If the music scene isnt up to quality
then that doesnt leave much to discuss.

There are only a handful of superb artists that are worth
discussion. As i learn more and grow in music i realize that
it is not specifically IDM that i should pay attention to.
In fact minimal dub and glitch (for example) hold some real
gems.

IDM can only go so far before it runs out of steam and
perhaps we will see a revival of sorts but there are only a
number of artists that are carrying this dying genre on its
shoulders.
