:D!!!

Actually that could quite possibly be fun!

Also the "piles of cash" idea could and does actually work
but i thought you were serious. I will blame it on the fact
that i just woke up :P

well, i don't really believe it's a money making scheme, but
that may be a byproduct of the shutdown.

we still don't know that they are closing due to financial
problems, that's all speculation.

sure, they've got to sell whatever stock they have to pay
the bills.

vicepresident panda, can i get you a cup of coffee?

Getting a job doesn't mean you're "giving up" music. I quite
regularly manage to do 5 hours of music a day, in spite of
working full time.

Some of the most revered writers couldn't live only by the
money generated from their writing while they were alive...

I'd also like to re-iterate Plaidzebra's point "and now it
seems like a good time to point out yet again
that merck did not report that they were going to fold
because of piracy or financial problems."

if merck aren't closing due to lost sales/piracy why are
various merck artists displaying that anti-file sharing
banner. surely merck will have kept all their artists
informed of their decision?

we should do a poll about this..i'd really like to see how
many people here downloaded any merck albums?

i check out a serious amount of music, but i can say that i
bought more of their releases than i have downloaded. bought
two (samplers) and downloaded one album which sucked heavily
and sounded like everything else on those samplers.

rephlex has anti-piracy messages on their releases and they
aren't closing. back to logic class with you.

tolstoyed, to be fair it's a mixed bag on the label, and
while they definitely favor the hip hop infused sort of old
school style and the samplers did tend to heavily favor the
releases with a capital I D M, tiki obmar is an example of
a merck artist that sounded very different from what you
might expect from the label.

no idea..i never listened..just a quick hear through. i
wasn't planning on even doing this but someone here was real
persistant of how much im going to like it. i think it was
something that started on 'ed'..like edit or something.

issue. I'll have my secretary cancel my 1 o clock. I am
giving you a raise and making you my personal advisor!

cheeky! ;) the merck artists imply merck's closing due to
file sharing. it's not just an inconsequential
run-of-the-mill 'hey kids remember to buy our records not
nick em' message.

well, only 2 M3rck artists (Lackluster and Proem, their more
"famous" ones on the roster), display banners. In
actuality, they're more like splash pages. And they dont
say anything about pirating. All they say is "we warned you
this was going to happen."

I'm just curious what this "warn" was and where it occurred.

hold up, ceri. if you download an album for free that you
wouldn't have otherwise bought, that's what stealing is.
you aren't entitled to own that album. you stole it.
whether you like it or not is totally irrelevant. "well, i
don't think i like this album, so i will download it and
listen to it many times and maybe burn it, but that's not
stealing because i don't really like it." give me a fucking
break.

you guys can go on and on and try to justify your actions
however you want - i don't give a shit what you do. but as
you can see, it does affect independent musicians when you
download their music for nothing instead of buying it. this
shouldn't be so difficult to get your head around.

if the music is really good someone will surely buy it! or
at least a higher percentage compared to if something was
only 'ok'. so until artists don't reach that degree of
'goodness', either intentionaly or by chance, they shouldn't
strive to live of their music.

personaly, if i was making music, i'd be flattered if
someone would want to give it a listen..and if they would
actually want to buy it i would be very happy..but i
wouldn't hold anything against anyone getting it for free.

it's silly to think you can only live out of your music if
you don't reach the certain level of quality :)

>qrter said: you keep saying things like "once things work
>themselves out" but the thing is things won't work
themselves out >- you'll have to do it.
'''
well, i made a statement as to things working themselves
out, without also adding the 'and so will i'. i have
gotten to the place where i even more-so than ever before
realize that what im doing, reaches a point, upon which i
normally stop, even if i have a mental impression of where i
want to take it next. once it goes exactly where it needs
to go, every track, i'll have "worked myself out", and
maybe that will result in 'things (outside me) working
themselves out'. but at the same time, what i've done, will
probably in the end bear fruit. and by that i mean it being
enjoyed/heard/used by someone. if any of it comes back to
me then great.
------
>qrter: you seem to think too much in 'black and white'
terms, >it's either the one or the other. being passionate
does not
>necessarily mean spending all your time on something.
///////
to each his own. i believe being passionate about something
means you think live and breathe it, constantly. it is what
moves you, and it is what makes your tears well.

///////
>dont go through half of your life setting yourself up for
>something that may not benefit you and then all of a sudden
>you are like 29 broke and realize you need a actual job.

well i'll be there soon, 2 years to go.
but a lot could happen in 2 years.

>virginpusher:"Artist/Musician" doesnt really look that good
on a >job a aplication. I mean what contacts could a
possible >employer find? What kind of information and or
conclusion >would they come to upon seeing this.

hopefully a positive one , if they happen to be hiring me
for making music for them - which i've done for one website
introduction, soundfx/some music, which resulted in me
getting roughly 3/5 of this laptop together.

there are _very few_ possibilities out there.. but the
_very few_ will suffice. providence.

well, with all do respect, I'm not seeing any antipiracy
messages on deciptikon's page. And nautilis has always had
a personal vendetta against file sharing, so what else is
new? Quite frankly, his own interpretations on the matter
could have gotten the best of his opinions, forcing him too
jump to conclusions like us all. As pietrobot mentioned,
we'll have to wait and see what the explanatory message will
be in the coming weeks.

well, i would say that you have to be very business savvy to
make a living off of music. talent would help, yes. you're
basically right about that.

but look at that second paragraph. what "i" would do if "i"
was a musician. that's well and good, but every musician is
different. some musicians want you to download their music
and some don't want you to. you have to respect their right
to choose how they want to control their art.

they should perhaps keep it for themselves if it's that
precious :)

yeah, we're all different..

well, why wouldn't it be precious to them? it's often the
product of a lot of time, effort and emotion for them. it
belongs to them.

yep, we will see. perhaps the artists have taken their
banners down for reasons we don't yet know. who knows?

perhaps merck just decided to call it a day and no longer
fancied releasing electronic music, simple as that. perhaps
they're planning to relaunch for the breakcore massive.

respect very very much :D

clarify in the coming weeks. I wouldnt be surprised if an
article about it appears in Grooves Mag some time soon.

Leaving p2p/piracy aside.

Everyone who can make money out of their talent like
musicians, actors with sports etc, should feel very honoured
when they don't necessarily have to get a fulltime job.

If this talent\hobby doesn't make enough money to earn a
living it's sad but not disastrous.

that you love to do...

What are people's favorite Merck releases? Cause, i'm
embarrassed to admit, I don't actually know which artists
are on Merck.

well brothomstates did quite an excellent vinyl only remix
of his track on squadron cd, for the merckSA 12". he also
did, to these ears, quite a remix for the machinedrum remix
CD and later 12" called 'half the battle'.

from "fantasia live @ ekko" and its one of the best tracks
i've ever heard.
