Umm, that's bullshit ... Dreadlocks are a sacred part of the Rastafarian relgion .. it's about respecting someone else's creed and external symbols, etc. If I was a Rastafarian, and I saw some white schmo wearing dreads, and maybe a T-Shirt espousing the smoking of mary-jane, I think I'd be pretty pissed off. The Hindus may choose NOT to partake in something, which is an entirely different loaf of bread; they're not saying "don't eat beef, because it offends us", they're saying "we're choosing not to eat beef because X, Y, and Z." Yeah, Rastafarianism has only been around since the early 1930's, and dreadlocks were around long before that. If they're required to be a symbol of Rastafarianism, then I could start a religion where one of the important sacrements is growing a mullet, therefore giving myself the right to be offended by all the people with mullets who aren't members of my cult. |
