A) Someone is buying the record but don't listen to it!

B) Someone is getting the tracks off Soulseek and love it!

That would depend on the arrtist.

fuckers who make music just for money would say A)
artists that are dedicated to making music and want to let
others enjoy their stuff too would say B) if of course they
still have enough money to live :)

hard to choose. but personally i would choose B).

afx says in interviews that he dosent care who dose or
dosent listen to his tunes but im guessing deep down inside
he would choose B)

I don't think any arrtist would be happy to make NO money,
but I think some people who do it because they love doing it
would be happy just to make a living frrom it and just be
glad that people listen to what they make.

Don?t know - but I hope B., cause money shouldn?t be the
reason for making music. Then again, it?s a bit hard to be
"professional" if no money at all comes from your music.
Tricky.
(...and again B. could lead to A. and even more listening!)

its a mixture of both. if no one buys it, then the labels
will no longer release it. so someone has to spend money on
it. it is always nice though when someone really likes the
music no matter what.

offline deepspace9mm from filth on 2003-08-07 16:51 [#00813695]

Exactly. I don't make music as much as paint / make visual
art but the object isn't to make money, although it's nice
so that you can spend the proceeds on making more art :-)

Telling artists to stop making music or making art unless
they're getting money is like telling someone to stop
breathing.

Do you believe her reasons for selling her music again, or,

B, just. This is why I offer songs on my website and such.
At the same time, I'd not say no to some of A in the long
run. It happens to everyone. But I'd rather have more Bs
than As, I suppose.

it's silly; so many fans of other artists have a legitimate
complaint over not ENOUGH material. for bjork, the fans can
simply say "no." collectors--people who MUST OWN
EVERYTHING--need serious help anyway, so if they're mad at
bjork for releasing so much stuff, they have their own
problems to worry about. i only wish some of my other
favorite artists (radiohead, RDJ, NIN, godspeed, mogwai, dj
shadow, tool) were as prolific as bjork's been lately.

i'm more inclined to believe what she says than disbelieve
it, but i wouldn't agree with her blindly. it seems likely
but there could be other issues at hand, ie: supporting her
new baby, funding her new album, etc. whether her motives
are pure or not, it's totally true that no one HAS to own
every little thing. i have 2 bjork dvd's and i plan to buy
just 3 or 4 more; i don't buy import singles, etc.

this seems a lot more noble to me than an artist releasing
another greatest hits collection (and so many bands and
singers have done this), although that's something a lot of
artists have no control over (label decision). or releasing
a sub-par live album.

Thats just stupid, imo.

i have a stack of cd's i've bought and not listened to. a
lot of these when i ordered them i had much more free time.
some i just wanted to take advantage of the sale price.
others i've been waiting till i've had time to really focus
on it during my first listen. i have 700 cd's and too many
of them i haven't heard enough of. but i know i'll have them
for years (barring any theft, fire, etc.) and someday
appreciate them to the extent they deserve.

i also have like 2 gigs of mp3's i've downloaded but not
listened to. what can i say, i seek out lots of music and i
don't have time for everything.

I'd probably say A, cos otherwise you'd have to get a
regular job and not be able to devote so much time to making
music.
I think a lot of successful artists make music mainly for
themselves - Not to listen to, just as a need to create...
I'd definetly go with A, although it'd be nice if other
well-known producers liked my stuff.

there hasn't been any 'hits' though since the last 'greatest
hits' was released. It is a commercial venture and that's
it. I'm not saying she hasn't got her personal reasons but
I don't think they're noble, it's related to the topic,
sell or give?

i was talking about other bands releasing a best-of set two
or more times.. look at classic rock bands for good examples
of this. this is a counterargument to what bjork is doing,
which is releasing something new (though not a new studio
album or EP.. speaking of which, why doesn't she do proper
EP's? that would be well wicked) that fans can pick up if
they want to. some bands (even the clash have been guilty of
this) try to push the same product over and over. so, it may
be all "products" instead of "art", but it's still a cool
thing to have and i support bjork for doing it. i didn't buy
greatest hits or family tree since most of the material was
already in my collection (FT not so much, but it was too
expensive and impractical), but i'll most likely get the
live boxed set unless it gets bad reviews.

i just can't believe peepz (musicians) would not wanna be
paid for their work. i mean is 10-12 dollars really that
much for something you love?

i think the artist would prefer choice A, and hopefully it
won'd sit around for long
