What would the artist prefer?

prolly a.

would ice cream makers rather:

a. have people walk into a store, steal a tub of ice
cream, and maybe come back to the store and give the
checkout girl some money if they really liked it?

or

b. just buy the damn ice cream?

Neither...I would prefer people to buy the music and like
it. There is no long term finance in either of the other
options so pretty quickly you are going to be in a position
where you can't continue making music professionally.

Although if you make a high proportion of your earnings from
Djing and live shows then it would obviously be better for
people to download the hit for free and really like it,
because they would go and see your shows.

For me the answer is obviously the download.

But some of you probably already know my stance on
downloading VS selling rekkids.

I never want to sell music! I want to make absolutely heaps
of the best music I possibly can and then let you all hear
it for free because I love you!

it depends... if I was an artist, and I spent thousands of
dollars making an album, I would rather they buy it, and if
they didn't listen to it, well too bad... but if I spent a
lot of time and money on something, I wouldn't want people
stealing it...

however, if I just made a song on my home computer in a
couple hours, I wouldn't care!

want to buy it

i mean, just think, for decades before p2p, so many people
used to buy albums *gasp* without hearing them first. do
those millions of people feel like fools for relying on an
artist's reputation (how much they like them or how much
most people like them), a good review, or a hit single? shit
no. and i still will buy things based on good reviews or a
good reputation (certain artists i always buy their new
album). it's just part of being a music fan.

as a counterpoint to what i just said, i'm also in the same
boat as you. i end up buying 50-75% of the albums i download
because i always end up liking what i hear. the music i love
the most gets bought soonest. p2p has resulted in me buying
at least 300 albums in the last 5 years of p2p downloading.
the other 350-400 i own are things i had pre-p2p or things
i've bought based on good reviews or artist rep.

B.

Ive already accepted the fact that I will never be able to
live off my music that I will release on CDs. IDM is not a
profitable genre. Simple as that.

Of course Ill still put CDs out, because there ARE people
who will buy... but I am completely fine with people just
downloading my music and enjoying it.

IDM is profitable if you're willing to do all of the
following:
1) collaborate with a hot singer
2) score commercials
3) tour with artists/bands you can't stand
4) remix artists/bands you can't stand

yes and of those 350-400, i'd say only 10-15 ended up being
regrettable decisions

...and we thank you for that. But there are some people
(like myself) that would prefer to make it into a career
(cuz work sucks), I have bills to pay. I'd like to give
everyone music for free, but the taxcollecters want my money
for some reason.

that's nothing over a span of a few years, plus it's not
like they're bad albums, just not as good as expected.
they'll still have some good songs on them.

one good thing about p2p is it's indirectly challenging
artists, even teen pop artists, to make better albums. the
fans now have the opportunity to hear the whole album before
deciding to buy it. i think this is one of the main reasons
people like britney spears are working with more talented
producers like the neptunes, william orbit, and daft punk,
instead of just the "hit squad" who made some popular early
singles but a lot of filler on the album. same goes for
every other artist.. it's up to them to craft the "must
have" album, not just a decent album with some good songs on
it.

Well yes, but I was just refering to CD sales alone.

1. Sure, if I like her
2. Sure, if I like the commericial
3. no
4. no

"1. Sure, if I like her"

could be a him (look at BT's collabs with that guy from
n*sync, i think his name is JC Chasez)

as for #3 and #4, what about the opportunity for a little
shit-stirring?

i'd really like to hear the tracks she did with fred durst,
not because i like the guy but because he describes the
tracks he produced (like an electronic artist would produce
them) as portishead style. also, chris vrenna (aka tweaker)
co-produced and co-wrote 1 or 2 of the durst/spears tracks,
and he's a mega talent.

thats true, I would work with a guy... if I liked his sound.
But im more inclined to work with a woman. I dont know
why...

3&4.. I really doubt I would do it... i dont think the busy
touring schedual would be worth it

also i have to ask you.. what's with the LeCoeur bashing on
the other board? it's really disappointing to see. i mean
she hasn't done anything to you, hasn't even talked to you
in, what, a year? i don't mean to ruin the thread or the
