Write a letter to hexagon sun and ask nicely. They'll post
you a CD with flacs of Acid Memories, Hooper Bay and the
'Boclite' and 'childV01ce' VSTs.

I achieved the Holy Grail of IDM (ie sounding like watered
down BOC) by making use of the excellent and free vst synth
polyiblit, set to DeepPwm and then detuned a
bit, and added a bit of overdrive. I sound like Big now.

Tired of your anime / abstract 3d / deviantart desktop
wallpaper? Have a Grinning Ape Official Desktop (1024 x 768 only at the
moment).

Yep, it's on the music70 site. They may or may not send you
the afformentioned flacs and ficitonal Vsts, nor can they,
"guarantee an immediate reply, but you will receive
something eventually."

Fixed Grinning Ape Official Desktop Linkage.

I like how the ape is not at all grinning. gives the whole
project a hint of sadness, underneath all the happy choonz
runs a melancholy current.

Grinning Ape continues apace, unabated, with the foetid,
sepulchral ambience that is Sunken Square.

Or hoot, is that Top of the Pops beamed live from inside
Windscale? Yes, it's Grinning Ape performing British Home Stores

I cannot help but notice the pessimism in tracks such as
sunken square since you have pointed this out.

British Home Stores is great in a 'breakbeat in movies' or
'commercial rave' for sky channel selection screens sort of
way. I don't like the volume twiddling in places, but the
acid line in there is lovely as are the drums.

offline obara from Utrecht on 2005-07-29 08:13 [#01678317]

the drumloop for "british home stores" is very popular, i
used it in a remix once : just for comparison

That tracks rather good in a dirty way, I like the "uh-huhs"
I think you make better use of that drumloop than me, but
then did you take advantage of turning all the nobs up to 11
like me, no, no you diidn't.

Thanks to Ceri JC who, so far, has been Grinning Ape's most
avid supporter having listened to all of the tracks, and
bestowed encouragement and words of wisdom, what a gent!

Is your location, '5 go mad in dorset' based on the comic
book parody of the famous five books that featured in the
classic humorous comic 'Oink'?
About Oink.

Obara: The lead that sounds like a TS404 in that track is
great. Nice work. Good use of reverb too.

I figured it was from The Comic Strip Presents series of TV
show from the early 80s.

You're both right, though Marlowe is corrector, it is from
The Comic Strip Presents ... Enid Blyton parody "Five go mad in Dorset".

Last week I took delivery of the frankly astonishing
9 DVD box set complete collection and am currently enjoying the highs and lows
of the core players of the 80s alternative comedy scene, now
today's popular mainstays.

what?core - manifesto
I was thinking about it all, wiv my brain and stuff, and I
thought what is at all about? Is it all just japes, or is
something at the core of the what?core? I think it's born
from those articles in Future Music or something that tell
you the formula to make Hard House, or How to Sound Lo-Fi,
or 8 essential plugins to create MHTRTC again. It's all so
ghastly and anti-music. And so many tracks one finds on the
net sound so polite, or as if the artist is making tracks
that "could be on an album", designed to be signed, there's
more than a whiff of desperation. This is my idea, as an
amatuer MP3-bound non-musician music-maker.

To make tracks that don't sound as if they could be on a
proper release.

If effects levels go up to ten, or even eleven, then to use
them to their full potential. Because why else do they go up
to ten (or eleven), it's such a waste to just add a touch of
distortion.

To aim to have at least 0.5 seconds of greatness in each
track, something that has the kernel of greatness or
suggests something not hitherto done to death in musics, as
most tracks don't even have any, any redeeming features or
ambitions of greatness apart from appearing on a Wire
Magazine CD giveaway.

To be sexy and make both men and ladies dance.

or a bunch of cd-rs with semi-professional artwork.

What an excellent idea, I've alredy settled on the
cover design.

The CD-R is a mix of all of the classic Grinning Ape tracks
that have become part of the global consciousness, fused
with Ambient Ape, a kind of selection of treated field
recordings. If anybody wants one, drop me an email (see my
profile) with your address and I will send one your way,
lovingly hand crafted, and you can look forward to the day
when you are set free from the shackles of "awful, trite
musics".
