so do they wear those furry hats and do traditional russian dances too?
I will make the assumption that they do, and that all russian electronic music sounds like Tatu and not download any!

Check out Vesna. They just released a cd on n5md. Havent heard it yet but there 7" on n5 was great. Also they are on a 10" with Novel 23 (who might also be from russia, can't remember) which is killer. It's on the sound silent label? Fairly new label I believe but its well worth tracking down. Vesna is kind of Smakish. Very cold dark beats w/ dramatic melody lines. I personaly think they would have made a great smak release, definitely better then the new batch of smak artists besides 1210 if they ever come out!

Russian electronica rules, Fizzarum are amazing but also check Ambidextrous, some of the most beautiful old school stuff I've heard and EU are really good too.
There's something about the sound of this music that I really love, I've not been to Russia but I've been to East Germany a few times and that music fits the atmos perfectly.

definitely. i was rocking arovane on my headphones wandering around east berlin last summer and it fit perfectly. the sound of decaying factories and abandoned towerblocks. it's that beautiful melancholy, the kind of feeling i associate with autumn.

The thing with the Russian stuff is that electronic music equipment was quite hard to obtain in the USSR, therfore anybody lucky enough to get their hands on some kit is bound to get to know it inside out, I've seen some kit lists for Fizzarum,EU and Ambidextrous and they are pretty basic, some good stuff but not much of it.
It just goes to show that it's not what you've got, it's what you do with it.
Oh and for all the Solar X fans you probably would really like Gimmik, he's one of my faves, you've probably heard it already though.

Oh and there are a couple of Russian compiliations compiled by EU, RU Electronic 1 &2, worth picking up if you see them for a good price but not amazing, they are good starting points to get into other Russian stuff though.

soundguy - yeah , i guess you are right about equipment. as far as i know (and can hear) Ambidextrous doesn't use hardware, just software. and unfortunately the software use is very noticable in his stuff, good melodies though .
i know Gimmik of course, and also like his other project "Abfahrt Hinwil" together with Chris Cunningham (Toytronic), very good electronica/ambient. the latest Gimmik album is very nice as well (Back to basics), i like that guitar track ;) and if you like SolarX you must check Mendelayev!! i think his beats/attitude to rhythm is kind of similar. and great melodies too.

definetly agreed with you Soundguy...that was the worst thing that happened to russian electronic scene.
lack of money and really xpencive equipment,so no wonder that we didn't hear from dem earlier.
anyhow,i find russian electronic music very good and inspiring.
no matter if it's simple, but it has that special sound for me.
so for now how many artists are there
fizzarum vesna syntetika eu novel 23 alexandroid mendelayev
+ some others that are hard to find on slsk

If you like fizzarum, try crunch's "1". They're similar but not russian. Unless being made by russians is your only criteria for what constitues good music. I'm not sure if I used the word criteria correctly.
