Found this website. I've only heard Fizzarum. Other
recommendations?

so do they wear those furry hats and do traditional russian
dances too?

I will make the assumption that they do, and that all
russian electronic music sounds like Tatu and not download
any!

;)

Check out Vesna. They just released a cd on n5md. Havent
heard it yet but there 7" on n5 was great. Also they are on
a 10" with Novel 23 (who might also be from russia, can't
remember) which is killer. It's on the sound silent label?
Fairly new label I believe but its well worth tracking down.
Vesna is kind of Smakish. Very cold dark beats w/ dramatic
melody lines. I personaly think they would have made a
great smak release, definitely better then the new batch of
smak artists besides 1210 if they ever come out!

check Mendelayev, very good producer! a bit like Aphex or
SolarX, but sounds very fresh. and definitely check
Syntetika, amazing ambient.

neh - i think Warm Math wasn't was good as previous EU
releases. if you check their Art-Tek album EU_SOFT, you'll
see what i mean.

Matvey - yes, there's a girl member in Syntetika;) she used
to play in Fizzarum actually!

Sepix - ambassador21 is more like Hardcore, no ? i thought
its like the belorussian version of Atari teenage riot?

Russian electronica rules, Fizzarum are amazing but also
check Ambidextrous, some of the most beautiful old school
stuff I've heard and EU are really good too.

There's something about the sound of this music that I
really love, I've not been to Russia but I've been to East
Germany a few times and that music fits the atmos perfectly.

soundguy - probably some sort of sadness in their music? i
know what you mean.

definitely. i was rocking arovane on my headphones wandering
around east berlin last summer and it fit perfectly. the
sound of decaying factories and abandoned towerblocks. it's
that beautiful melancholy, the kind of feeling i associate
with autumn.

soundguy - yeah, the Little Pretty Automatic album on worm
interface is one of my favourite records ever! also his
latest CHANEL303 on Hymen is cool , a bit different though.

Is the new Solar X more mellow, I like the really slow ones
off Little Pretty

soundguy - no , its very fast electro/beats. with his usual
granular stuff ;) there are two very melodic tracks though ,
so good.

The thing with the Russian stuff is that electronic music
equipment was quite hard to obtain in the USSR, therfore
anybody lucky enough to get their hands on some kit is bound
to get to know it inside out, I've seen some kit lists for
Fizzarum,EU and Ambidextrous and they are pretty basic, some
good stuff but not much of it.

It just goes to show that it's not what you've got, it's
what you do with it.

Oh and for all the Solar X fans you probably would really
like Gimmik, he's one of my faves, you've probably heard it
already though.

offline soundguy from London (United Kingdom) on 2004-06-03 10:31 [#01221114]

Oh and there are a couple of Russian compiliations compiled
by EU, RU Electronic 1 &2, worth picking up if you see them
for a good price but not amazing, they are good starting
points to get into other Russian stuff though.

also must mention New Composers, probably for fans of more
classical ambient, but very very good. especially the album
ASTRA. i think even on Orb's UFO you can see New composers
in credits ;)

offline timtom on 2004-06-04 15:11 [#01223282]
Points: 141 Status: Lurker

soundguy - yeah , i guess you are right about equipment. as
far as i know (and can hear) Ambidextrous doesn't use
hardware, just software. and unfortunately the software use
is very noticable in his stuff, good melodies though .

i know Gimmik of course, and also like his other project
"Abfahrt Hinwil" together with Chris Cunningham (Toytronic),
very good electronica/ambient. the latest Gimmik album is
very nice as well (Back to basics), i like that guitar track
;) and if you like SolarX you must check Mendelayev!! i
think his beats/attitude to rhythm is kind of similar. and
great melodies too.

yeah , those RuElectronic CDs on Lo rec are nice, but the
second is probably better, especially tracks of Alexandroid
and SCSI-9. i think Alexandroid just released their new
album on Lo, must buy it, most of Alexandroid stuff is very
good.

definetly agreed with you Soundguy...that was the worst
thing that happened to russian electronic scene.
lack of money and really xpencive equipment,so no wonder
that we didn't hear from dem earlier.
anyhow,i find russian electronic music very good and
inspiring.
no matter if it's simple, but it has that special sound for
me.

so for now how many artists are there

fizzarum
vesna
syntetika
eu
novel 23
alexandroid
mendelayev

+ some others that are hard to find on slsk

EU was good but got boring and very repetative very quickly.
"warm math" is awful.

qrter - i guess the best from EU was the album on Art-tek
(EU-SOFT) and Pause2 7" and Reframing Mini album.

plaster - i'm sure you can find some of them in shops, or
online shops at least. your list contains the main russian
artists probably, could only add also Lazyfish and Sleepy
town manufacture.

"reframing" is indeed good and I think "stereo" is pretty
good too, also on Pause2.

nikakoi, although i've been informed that hes georgian, not
russian. still, pretty good idm-ish music from that area of

heh heh, how- p2p file sharing?

If you like fizzarum, try crunch's "1". They're similar but
not russian. Unless being made by russians is your only
criteria for what constitues good music. I'm not sure if I
used the word criteria correctly.
