there were Machinedrum preset sounds in Untilted too (i can
very easily identify some preset hihats in there)

as much as i do agree that preset raping is rather ghey, i
would never accuse autechre of such a thing. if they've used
a preset in a track, i would come to think of it as more
along the lines that they actually like that timbre rather
then just using a preset for laziness. although that of
course could be the case, but until rob or sean come forward
and say so, you'll be none the wiser as to whether they used
it because they like the sound, or if they were being lazy.

are you gonna flame in the direction of anyone who owns a
303, or an 808, or a 909 and hasn't hardware modded it so
you can do more than what the standard controls allow?

or are you gonna flame towards someone who uses a guitar
without any form of effects pedal?

am i talking bollocks?

quite possibly yesnomaybedefinitely

it really doesn't matter if it is presets or not - some md
sounds are quite similar anyway... and anyhow, one thing is
really important > no rules.

(so as long they don't start to make cheesy covers I can
live with some lazy md-sounds here and there - the massive
overflow of music is nice and raises the chance of finding
some decent tunes...)

I think he means that as Autechre had some involvement in
the physical development of the machinedrum there is the
possibility they developed the sounds they are using and
Elektron have also included them as presets on the unit.

I would also like to add that there is nothing wrong with
using presets. Most traditional instruments have only one
preset sound, it's how you arrange it that matters.

I like what Paradinas said about it.

So do you consider the use of presets as being a bit
cheesy?
No, I use presets as well, if they’re nice
(laughs). I like some cheesy sounds; I use both. I don’t
like to prefer one to the other. People who say “no
presets” can be fucking boring bastards as well as people
who just use presets. I mean I used a lot of stock D50
sounds on some of my tracks as well. If it works, use it.
It’s the musical ideas that need to be
interesting
(emphasis mine) and I think there are really
good tracks using stock D50 sounds, I’m not talking about
mine. But in terms of recognising the synths, I could
programme it as well, but I’m not prejudiced against
people who use presets (laughs).

OT: Paradinas use of D-50's "Soundtrack" Pad on "Daytime

springtime track :D )

I never said they did, I didn't even imply it. Read my post
again.

What I did imply was that I don't get why it matters that
they use presets (or not). Does every little sound they make
have to be self-made to make it special? How about using
whatever you find to make cool songs?

What Mike said :)

I think you're the one who thinks (or thought, so it seems)
the boys infallible. And reading that over and over again in
your posts is pretty annoying, yes.

Furthermore, to criticise artists for what they release or
what kind of music they make is rather silly in itself.
There is no point to it.

guys..

if someone uses presets, its their problem not yours.
in fact its anyones problem depending on who listens and how
they react.
if ae have ever used a preset (which im 99% sure they have,
i mean name one artist that hasnt used presets), then they
are at the mercy of whatever listener doesnt like presets,
and recognizes it as such.

some people strongly dislike presets, i dont really
understand why, but hey, its their opinion, and i respect
that they dont want presets in their favorite music.
im of the sort that thinks the end product is more important
than the process to make it.
when you judge a piece of music based on the skill level
involved in making it, you effectively prohibit yourself
from a good musical experience, and you care less about the
music, and more about the technicalities of things.

either way, with everything ae has done sound design wise,
and everything they have accomplished, why be so
relentlessly unforgiving if they used an md preset.. its
good stuff and i dont think they deserve that kind of
criticism, and not because they are infallible either.

sitting typing on a message board making a point that
autechre have used a preset?

i was just getting a tad defensive because someone thought i
was bullshitting about that bass drum being from MD. stupid
argument to get involved in. dont get me wrong, i dont
dislike the track because it uses that noticeable MD bass
drum, although it doesnt help either.
lupus, Im honestly surprised 3 years later people are still
hung up about my untilted switch.
i suppose 30 minutes can be defined as spending a portion of
my life, because thats literally how long it took me to
change the name of my own tracks and share them on soulseek.

What part of AE's equipment list did i 'copy' ? Is it
because i own a machinedrum, i guess only autechre is
allowed to use them anyone else who does is clearly
copying....

The use of presets is fine is some music, but if your music
is all about sound design, and doesn't have too much in the
way of harmony or melody, it's a bit boring if that sound
design isn't actually by you...

Say you use a cool preset evolving pad sound in a
non-ambient track. Fine. But if you're creating an ambient
track using a sustained note of just that sound, what
exactly have you done? In genres like that the excitment is
in the creation of beautiful new sounds.

I suppose it depends on what you're trying to do. I don't
mind how Ae use their sounds - it's their bloody music. But
it would be a tad dissappointing if they relied on presets,
because to me, their music is all about texture and sound
design.

Just my two cents. It might be drunken pish.

Maybe they use whatever sound they think is appropriate.
If the preset had the sound they wanted, they shouldn't
alter it.
