Well, it is okay, it isn't particularly awful, but there's lots of better minimal/ambient music out there. With this kind of music, if the atmosphere doesn't suck you in to begin with, there's nothing much you can do, is there? I actually even prefer their collaborations with the Hafler Trio.

due to it's length and the general boringness of the track, I'd probably say perlence subrage 3-36 is autechre's absolute worst tune ever.

to me Perlence subrange 6-36 sounds like a distant cousin to Rale with all that loud reverb going on.
or to compare it in another way...
it sounds like it's AE's take on Brian Eno's Music for Airports ambient concept. A lengthy track that is meant to be repeated ad infinitum.

I severely doubt it (cos I doubt Quadrange would be accepted
as a proper release by them) but you don't think Ae are trying to end their contract with Warp to move on to another
label or maybe even start their own?
I can see the problems Ae have with Warp, clearly they don't have enough artistic freedom, Warp obviously made them pick the most commericial tracks for Quaristice which is already being hailed as their "sell-out" album ( you can already hear all the adverts in post-production using Simmm(bitious mix) as the soundtrack) and the demands upon them to produce upwards of 50 tracks now per album most be taking its toll, I'm sure they need another label in addition to Skam and are frustrated at not being able to release what they really want to or have the chance to play 3 day long DJ sets. I think as their contract fulfilment they'll release all the Quaristice related material on one massive 18' vinyl and the accompanying deck to play it on and completely bankrupt Warp and make the Analord binder look like an underpriced bargain.

Perlence subrange 6-36 is a MAJESTIC finale to the embarressment of riches of Quaristuff, I cannot get enough of it, and for all the little snipet ambient tracks that poke their heads in then disspear, flitting into the the forest of Ae's mind(s), the fact that this epic holds its on for nearly an hour is something to be cerished, cheered, encouraged and saluted. This is the music that got me into "this sort of music" in the first place, atmosphere, haunting sounscapes, triggers for the imagination, the creation of vast fields of space, the joy of music.
If you can't just enjoy it and your sat there scratching your nascent stubble trying to work out which reverb they use, you are fucked for the rest of your musical life.

Hoyhoy,
I'm new to this forum, discovered it while trying to find info about the Quadrange release. Saw there were a couple of other folks from Norway? Anyone from Oslo?
I been really getting into ambient music lately so I love this new direction Autechre is taking. Nice to listening while doing artwork. Been a huge fan of Autechre for about 4 years now.
Subrange 6-36 (I got the MP3 version) seems to have some weird distortion at the deep bass, is this on the flac version as well? Cause it sounds like a blown speaker and sorta ruins the smooth feel of the track.

I'm sorry, but Eno totally masters that genre. You can't even compare ambient artists to his stuff, it's killer.

I'm listening on dynamic studio headphones so the sound on subrange 6-36 is probably just a part of the track. Maybe I'll get used to it, thought it does sound like bad distortion. Other then that I'm really pleased with this Quadrange release and think it's a cool way of releasing music. Maybe more bands will try this subscription style.
BTW how can I get that Blyz Castl track you guys keep ranting about? If it's a Japan release exclusive would it not be alright to post the download link directly on this forum? They can't exactly expect us to acquire a Japanese iTunes account.
Also where can I find that awesome live track? Didn't get to see them this year, stuck home in Oslo with the family. Heard the Vancouver show was a complete fiasco.
Haha I'm a lurker!

SEAN: what should we do to fill the 50 more minutes we promised on quad range?
ROB: what about that time we made a loop of perlence and let it play for an hour where you mashed keys on top through reverb?
SEAN: hey not a bad idea! but isnt that the one with some really jarring stuttering / clipping effect on the entire time?
ROB: yes but most people will either think we did it on purpose or convince themselves that it sounds good
SEAN: Gold!

The distortion/clipping is what makes things a harder listen for me. I'm glad to hear other people are getting it; I thought that maybe it was just my headphones. Whether it's deliberate or not is irrelevant; I just find it distracting and ugly sounding. :-) It does sound like the sort of distortion you get when you're getting carried away with an ambient jam and haven't watched your levels, but whatever.

I just bought a new "executive" chair and some new heaphones and I dig the shit out Perlence Subrange 6-36, I like going with the flow, I like heaing the very distant bits of detail that waft in and away as if you're lost out at sea and you just catch wind of some faraway snippet, and those meteroic markers of time you call clipping are like hot coals dropping into the vast ocean of... Subrange 6-36. Best ambient experience of Long Time.

I thought clipping would "fade" out the rest of the sound, if it was real clipping? It doesn't do that on any of the soundsystems I've been trying this out on. So it must be intended - I mean - and it seems to be under "control". It's a pretty nasty sound, I agree, but it doesn't ruin the track for me in any way. It reminds me a bit of a bass sound effect thingy they used on a remix they did for Scorn way back...."falling" was the name of the track... awesome track! So it's just a sound, knowhamsayin'...
And yes, welcome tiftof, fellow norseman! I clicked my way into your website through your profile information and I have to say that's some pretty awesome drawings and images you've done there! You should all have a look. Well, you've all seen his avatar...

I guess it's time to get the whole deal. I've waited this long because I don't like waiting for individual tracks. Now I can get them all, which is nice. All these different versions and jams need to be relistened to get the whole point of this exercise (if there is a point). It seems there's some breakdown of the very concept of album right here. And the idea of CD-releases is clearly becoming less dominant and more of a sideshow. Next, music in different chunks, in weird little online distribution models...
But I admit, the album was fine when I first heard it, and all these extra tracks make me really confused. Hard to say what to think just yet.

no no, I haven't listened to any of these bleep tracks yet, so I was just confused at the idea and concept of it. I don't think it's even possible to listen to all of it in one sitting (at LEAST there has to be a bathroom break). 140 minutes is like the operatic version of IDM. Add the whole autechre catalogue circa 2008 and you have some 4 ridiculous hours of music. There's some weird megalomania combined with a need for repetition. It's called self-erasure. It's also a form of pop art.
Actually now I know what this style is like: it's like Moby. Yes, like Moby after "Play", when he released his Play b-sides and then another album in that same style. He didn't get out of this self-iteration mode, he never did. Moby became a self-iterative loop, like a broken record. But Autechre are playing it cool by not releasing multiple albums to cover the same base. That means that in six months they'll be totally over their "Play" phase and onto something new.

Thank you fellow norseman!
I'm currently working as a concept artist at Storm studios in Oslo which is really cool. You've probably heard of Peter and the Wolf?
I think the clipping sound in Subrange 6-36 is conceptually clever as it probably comes from automating the reverb parameters, so it basically admits it's dependence of digital reverberation.
Like all Autechre the more you listen to it the more you like it. This track gives you that true ambient feeling of zoning you out. Just try listening to Tkakanren right after the whole 58 minutes of 6-36; gives you such a rush, since your heart rate has been slowed down.

So, since the final track wasn't the live set...
I wonder if their next move will be to do a pearl jam and release a soundboard for every city of the tour. Each one will contain an image of a square which represents the city.
The sets will be released on 8 track only, and will be available individually or by subscription. Only those purchasing the subscription will also receive a custom 8 track player, which will be installed with an LE version of Max/MSP and a Kaoss Pad so you can make your own custom mixes as you listen. Both groups will also receive a sticker and a frosty mug.

I've thought they've said they're not keen on releasing a live album. Make your own live album, take all the Quaristice related tracks, set Winamp to random, hire a club, set them of, record it on you phone, upload it to slsk, let Elsive convert it to Flac, job done.
