dahmer: 1/5 -- i was only interested in seeing this movie because jeffrey dahmer was from milwaukee wisconsin and i was curious about the way hollywood would depict wisGonsin...well, seems to me they didn't depict it at all. crappy movie, obviously -- not to mention i haven't had the stomach for this sort of thing since i was about 14 hotel rwanda -- 3/5 -- i'm a sappy kind of girl so of course i liked this movie and schindler's list and others like them. but the movie could definitely have been better -- i thought we were kind of thrown in with not very much background info, too. and that i didnt really know anything about what happened before seeing the movie is honestly kind of disgusting considering the magnitude of it. i dont know, worth seeing anyway. |

Extremes - 4/5 From comically gruesome to David Lynch-ian creepyness, the three directors Fruit Chan, Park Chanwook, and Takashi Miike have collaborated on a great little asian psycho horror triple feature. 3 Iron - 4/5 Though a bit pretentious, this is a very enjoyable yet unconventional love story in which the two main characters never speak to eachother on screen, save one scene when the woman utters the words "I love you." It is a Korean Bonnie and Clyde-like story. A man who routinely breaks into houses meets an abused wife who decides to run away with him. They break into houses then cook, clean, and create harmless mischief, never speaking to eachother but slowly falling in love. They eventually get caught, and the man trains himself to become like a ghost so he can escape and be with the woman again. Primer - 4/5 I really enjoyed this brief but intelligent mind-bender about time travel. I immediately watched it a second time when it finished, to try to put the puzzle together. 2046 - 3/5 Wong Kar Wai's new film about a writer (tony leung) who dates several women and writes his experiences into a novel about the future. I didn't enjoy this as much as 'Chung King Express' mostly because it is so damn long. but is is beautifully filmed in Wong Kar Wai's style, showing a cramped intimate Hong Kong of the 1960's. Japanese Story 2/5 Toni Colette playes a software programmer who is obliged to tour around the Australian desert with a Japanese businessman. They get stranded in the desert and despite their differences form a unique loving bond. But 2/3rd's of the way through the film, a quite unexpected but semi-retarded even happens and the movie changes into a weepy depressing narative about Toni Colette's character dealing with loss. A rather heavy-handed, laughable movie I cannot recommend. |

North Korea: A Day in the Life 4/5 Seoul Train 4/5 I saw these two documentaries as a double feature yesterday in the Seattle Film Festival. Both are about 50 minutes long but both are immensely interesting. The first, North Korea: A Day in the Life is a piece done by a director Pieter Fleury from the Netherlands. He was allowed by the North Korean government to follow around a few members of a family on a typical day in Pyongyang. There is no commentary at all. No Michael Moore style grandstanding. But there doesn't need to be. The message is clear. Living in North Korea is like living is some wierd Orwellian society. The children go to school where they are taught 'lessons' about the benevolance of their dear leader Kim Jong Il. The woman works in a factory where high production is viewed as the way to fight the 'battle' against outside tyranny. And they all do it with big smiles on their faces. Seoul Train shows different side of the North Korean dillema. People who are not party loyalists, living in rural North Korea are suffering from famine and poverty. The situation is so desperate, they seek to escape via an underground railroad run by activists who attempt to smuggle refugees through china, mongolia and into south korea. We get to see a couple different groups risking their lives for freedom. The tragic thing is, The Chinese government actively hunts down and captures 'illegal immigrants' and sends them back to North Korea. But defecting from North Korea is a capitol offense. Refugees that are caught and returned, are imprisoned, tortured, and executed. Pregnant women are given brutal forced abortions. China sends some 100 North Koreans back every month to their certain deaths. for more information |

mulholland drive A+ ! It did everything a good film should. It frightened me, suspended me, awed me, and confused the hell out of me. But I think I understood it. I figured out the events weren't in order thats for sure. The puzzles to Lynch's films are like riddles with the answer on the tip of your tongue, it's all there just add things up. I won't say what I think it was all about, as most of you already know and some of you would rather not know. Good film. Is Blue Velvet worth a watch? |

i'd give it a 2/5. even though she was just sitting there, looking like a doll, i think she enjoyed it in her own fucked up way (then again, i only have about 37 minutes of it). she's not that unpleasant to look at so it was mildly enjoyable. .....sorry for sharing that but you seem like a girl who does not get that easily offended. |

man on fire 3.5/5 i didn't see this until now because it's a tony scott film and when i hear the name tony scott i think sucky, but i've realized that i really shouldn't (not to mention everytime i go to rent a movie featuring denzel washington/brad pitt/johnny depp/really any famously attractive man, i get shit from my boyfriend)! he has done true romance, which is one of my favorite movies ever, and enemy of the state! and this movie was pretty cool too, even if it was kind of choppy and a lil overdone visually. and the story itself was especially interesting to me because i work with a lot of mexicans who have been telling me crazy stories about mexico city and i find that whole place to be kind of intriguing. |
