The indicators of the SELECTOR switches
show you the measure number. (Refer to
RULES OF INDICATION on P.69)

Whilst the TB-303 is playing, obviously the
numbers will increase.

i've got two tracks ready, i've just got to sort out how to
get them to you ceri. i think i'll have to figure out
yousendit, my zebox membership has lapsed and both tracks
are too large for the free site (and too large to email).
i'm going to try to do at least one more track and then i'll
let you pick which one (if any!) is worthy of inclusion.

You can email them to me at the gmail address if your email
provider will let you mail large files (try zipping them if
it doesn't like MP3s).

Links to external sites are fine too, but please email them
rather than posting them here. I look forwards to hearing
your track, cheers.

Re-birth is fucking hard... because of the low-res man I
have to switch to 800x600 and I still don't see the text
labels on most of the buttons (because of the low resolution
bitmaps).

But fun in a mash-the-buttons-see-what-it-does way ;)

offline Ceri JC from Jefferson City (United States) on 2005-09-20 02:23 [#01728034]

ymenard: I do agree that they could of added a x2 res.
button, but once you're familiar with it (I fortunately got
acquainted with it when 800*600 on a 14" monitor was the
norm), it's pretty simple, conceptually, compared to most
modern software/synths. Although I do agree that the
programming is a bit fiddly, but that's part of the
emulation of the original gear and often results in some
happy mistakes when you get things slightly different to how
you intended.

plaidzebra:

I can't check at the moment (gmail is down), but I will mail
you if there's a problem.

Just had a thought, if ULing emailing tracks as mp3s is a
problem for anyone, they could try sending me the rebirth
file (rbs) to the above email addy and I can render to .wav
ready for the mix on my machine.

Cheers.

Any limitations in style, speed (bpm) or track lenght?

Nope. I'd actually really like (and will aim to use) tracks
that differ from your typical rebirth sound (ie like the
default song). Minimal techno, electro, ambient, dnb, etc.
are all possible in rebirth and submissions would be
welcomed.

If you write, say, a 20 minute track, it may be used in an
abbreviated form (Ie faded out early/prematurely mixed with
the next track). Mind you, if you write something killer
that's 10 minutes long, of course I'll use it.

BPM is only limited by rebirth, but clever doubling
up/halving can obviously extend the possible amount :)

I've received 7 or so tracks so far, a few more people have
said tracks are on the way. Despite the relatively few
submissions, they've thankfully all been of a good quality
so far. It seems the old hands at rebirth have done tracks
very quickly, whereas other people are learning to use
rebirth for the first time and taking a bit longer.

Good variety of styles so far and whilst they're obviously
using rebirht sounds, they don't sound like your typical
rebirth tracks.

i hope people will be pleasantly surprised, they'll be
expecting "bmm tss bippa wa bm tss bow wow" and instead
they'll get OMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM...

Yes, you can get quite ambienty stuff out of it with a
little work. Remember, with the right settings/fx, a 303
isn't a million miles away from a bass guitar in sound
(that's what it was made for, after all). Another tip is
that you can recreate certain effects through careful
programming (granular cut ups by changing the order of notes
for one bar, deleting every other note for a gating,
following each accented note with a standard one for a
strange delay-like effect, etc.)

I'm not saying all stereotypically re-birth sounding tracks
are bad (I've got a very good one amongst the submissions so
far), just that if people think that's all that's possible,
they lack imagination.

Yep! If they're hosted on somewhere where the link will
expire within 7 days, please check with me first. Some bloke
(didn't recognise his name from here) did that without
notifying me, I was away, by the time I got it the link had
expired and he hasn't responded to my request for him to
repost it.

Multiple tracks are welcomed and if they're good enough/fit
well with the other tracks, I've no problem with using a
couple from the same person in the compilation.

Nope, I'm quite disappointed. A lot of people promised
tracks and showed a lot of interest and then didn't deliver.
Credit to those who did, often multiple tracks and a high
quality.

how soon until you put out the vibe?

Not for a while: I'm offering a month's extension.
Partly because of the lack of submissions and partly because
I am very busy at the moment (Away all week and I crashed my
bike this morning- don't worry I'm fine, but have to spend a
lot of time fixing it).

I have to disagree with you there. Only one of the
submissions I have received so far sounds like your
archetypal Re-birth track. Yes, most people's re-birth
noodlings are boring and generic. Part of the challenge of
this vibes was for people to make interesting varied music
with a limited toolset. There are some great minimal techno
tracks and even an ambient one in what I have so far!

On another note: Perhaps part of the reason there was a slow
uptake was the difficulty associated with DLing a copy. I
will discuss with the powers that be, the possibility of
hosting a legit copy of Re-birth, if anyone can supply me
with the ISO/zip (I can't bit torrent on this machine),
please post here/email me and we will sort something out.
Many thanks.

man i had no trouble downloading rebirth, again. there are

if you want, i'll give you a ton of tracks and you can just

Go for it- I was actually considering a compilation of only
the 5 or so people who've submitted tracks so far, the
quality is good enough and the tracks are varied. Perhaps
through in a few pseudonyms Rephlex Manhunt Compilation
stylee to make it look like the work of more people that it
actually is? :)
