"and there are a similar number of stars
in the universe to brain cells in the brain "

This implies that the universe has limits. I'm not cutting
this down, but I've always thought of the universe as
endless. Not that a human mind can comprehend this, but
it's what I've thought. Also, I've always assumed that
there is only one universe.

The universe has a finite number of stars,
a finite amount of space,
but it is 'boundless'
meaning,
if you were to go straight along, if you could go fast
enough, you would come back to where you started.
SOme good lyrics from modest mouse:
"the universe is shaped exactly like the earth.
if you go straight along enough you end up where you were."

cosmic inquiries
:-)

Also, along with quantum uncertainty, it is theorized that
each possible outcome exists in it's own 'universe' and
there are an infinite number of universes in the overall
'multiverse'.
This is called the diverging world theory.
I don't know enough about quantum physics to form an
opinion, but it does make for some very interesting
consequences, see quantum immortality:

By the way, how do you make links function so they open in a
new
window?
I know it's annoying to be taken completely out of the board
by a link just to read an article.

Right click on the link, select Open in New Window.
Umm, I know what you meant. I just don't know. That's how
I do it.

other human activities that have led to war, violence,
suffering, etc:

drugs, sex, land, food, water, shelter, politics, love,
children, music, weapons, human rights and freedoms, class
systems, slavery, wealth and greed, alcohol, property,
clothing and anything else that comes into human contact.

I think singling out religion is at best unfair. The
problem is never with God but with how He is represented.
The problem is people.

My primary disagreement with superstition is that it
represents a primitive model of reality that we should
outgrow. That it leads to such barbarisms as involuntary
genital mutilation and genocide is just icing on the cake.
