I finally thought of ONE thing I didn't like about the
game.
When you got to a boss character in Ocarina of Time, you
were given a short animated introduction before the ugly
beast finally dropped in front of you and it's name appeared
in giant letters across your screen. Sadly, in Wind Waker
you are given neither the introduction or the identity..
I wonder why they chose to omit this? I thought it gave the
end monsters more of a personality and helped define their
place in Ganondorf's legion of evil.. When finally
vanquished you could bask in your victory knowing that
'Queen Gohma' would never rise again.
Meh.

"Try sending it to pod_child@hotmail.com"

Yeah i sent you something. Hope you're able to retrieve it.
I take it the term "pod child" is taken from something out
of The Wind Waker? :-p

"You should send your old Gamecube and Wind Waker to a
certain Finnish damsel in distress.
"

Lol yeah, it would be very good for my karma i'm sure! I
mean giving away a gamecube AND zelda-game... :-p That's the
kind of stuff that instantly guarantees you a place in
heaven when you die ;-)

"It was a platinum GBA SP far off
in the distance, waiting to be liberated from it's cardboard
box..
"

so did you get one? And are you giving your old normal GBA
to a certain Finnish damsel in distress? You know it would
be the chivalrous thing to do. ;-)

"At this point it's either Nintendo or children's
literature.
"

You're a writer? Now that's what i call a nice profession!
I'd go for the children's literature for 3 reasons:

1. you have a much bigger chance of making it.
2. getting too close to nintendo would probably make it
loose some of it's magic for you... like meeting your
hero... it's always a bit of an anti-climax. And afterwards
your hero has become a lot more normal, and alot less
"magic"
3. well i just love children's literature :-) It's so
imaginative! All these bizarre things are happening in
children's books, but it's all presented as if it were
completely normal. So the kids just think: "oh animals talk
to eachother? that's cool." I think it can really change the
way they look at the world :-) (hopefully make it a little
more beautiful. I'm trying to make a career out of
illustrating children's books :-) I remember some of those
illustrations i saw as a child so well... i just hope one
day someone in the world will feel the same way about one of
my illustrations.

I think easy rpg's are in general also more enjoyable...
because the story keeps moving at a steady pace and you get
sucked into it alot more.

(i always very vividly remember a snes-rpg called "illusion
of gaia"... i played through it in a matter of days, the
puzzles were almost a joke... so easy. But it felt more like
reading a good adventurebook than playing a videogame... i
loved it! And there's ofcourse also Paper Mario. Exactly the
same story --> very easy/very enjoyable).

However... i do feel i should get stuck on a zelda-games
atleast a couple of times ;-) Even if it does hold up the
story. Walking around helplessly trying to figure out what
to do next is just part of the zelda-experience! But.... all
in all i'm not too worried about it being too easy.

"There's no needless frustration, No pointless
chores
"

For that reason... difficult games are just fine, as long as
they don't become frustrating :-)

Oh and plllllllease tell me there are no skulltulas to be
found in the wind waker!! :-p Talk about frustrating
gameplay! Sometimes i still wake up screaming in the middle
of the night... thinking i'm hearing that skulltula-sound!

Erik - after finally reading your letter I have only two
words for you : HARD CORE
That's awesome. It's already in the bag as far as I'm
concerned. I can't think of anything more original than
that.. You NEED to get me some scans before you send it
off. I'm just about to goto bed so I'll reply to your mail
and the rest of your posts tomorrow....
p.s. If you wake up in the middle of the night and your
house is burning down you know what to go for first. Forget
your photo albums, forget your cat, forget your little
sister; you grab 'THE PROJECT' and you hurl yourself out the
nearest window. Got that?

One more thing before I join Kirby in Dreamland :

Cha-Ching! If things keep going this way I might never
leave the house again.

"so did you get one? And are you giving your old normal GBA

to a certain Finnish damsel in distress? You know it would
be the chivalrous thing to do. ;-)"

I'm on my third attempt today; preparing to embark for a
cold and distant land in search of a sole SP. It seems
they're sold out all over the country and it's becoming
increasingly difficult to find one anywhere other than
auction sites. One of Nintendo's little marketing tricks to
build demand I guess.. New shipments aren't supposed to be
coming in until early may. I don't know if that's such a
good strategy though. It seems like by that time, people
would opt to just buy the Gamecube GBA player instead. $50
cheaper and a giant screen of visibility. But what do I
know? I shouldn't question the master's decisions.
And the Finnish damsel doesn't long for a Gameboy, she lusts
for a Wind Waker ready Gamecube.. Besides, I already traded
mine in for credit at the nerd shop a while back. You on
the other hand are in a perfect position to exhibit
nonbiased love and compassion, enriching the world and all
it's inhabitants.

"You're a writer? Now that's what i call a nice profession!

I'd go for the children's literature for 3 reasons:"

Writer and illustrator. I'd love to see some of your work
if you by chance have any of it scanned in. Jpegs
preferably.. I'll reciprocate if you're interested. And
I'm not worried about getting too close to Nintendo and
having it lose it's gleam for me.. I'd be so thrilled to be
part of the creation of such magical worlds and atmospheres
for others that I think the feeling would only be
heightened. Shit, I hope you're the only one that reads
that.

Was Illusion of Gaia a Squaresoft game in which you played
as a blondhaired boy with a wrench? I think one of my
friends had that when I was little.. That's all I can
remember though.
I really hope they port Paper Mario to the GBA; I never got
a chance to play it on SNES but everyone that has tells me
it's amazing.

You'll be sleeping soundly soon enough. No skulltulas(or

harrowing noise wasn't it?

Under the Link icon it says :

I have three seperate games saved(the maximum amount

Must be, I can't think of anything else it would represent.

What's your favorite Gamecube game so far?

yes i know, i'm sorry... i've been kinda busy with
you-know-what ;-) "the project"

But i hope JAroen is still reading all this? I managed to
reserve (well sort of) the game after all. I finally found a
toystore that didn't have a dumb blond 15-year old
girl selling the videogames :-p

No this guy actually knew there was gonna be a bonus-disc
with Wind Waker (altough he thought ALL the previous
zelda-games would be on it, haha, now wouldn't that be
sweet?). But anyway, he wrote down my name. And incase they
would be going really fast... he'd put one aside for me.

So maybe you could try to work something like that out too?
I didn't exactly pre-order it, just made sure they wouldn't
all sell out before i could get my hands on a copy :-p

Hey thanks man! For all of your kind words in that post! :-)
It's good to know that someone as zelda-obsessed as you also
thinks this is a good idea!

I got alot of work done yesterday, and i plan on doing even
more this afternoon. So it's all coming along nicely i
think. If you happen to think of any interesting
situations/moments from one of the games, be sure to let me
know!

I'll have to see about those scans... hm... i'm thinking of
taking some pictures of it before i send it off, and i think
there are some stores that'll also put your pictures on a
CD-R. I would also just like to have some images of it for
myself to remember it by :-)... so this might be a good
opportunity to also show them to the rest of the world eh.

"

well... nintendo isn't doing that great at the moment
(sadly). It seems they do have a bit of an image-problem. So
maybe you should question their decisions ;-)

I read an interesting comment on the situation the other
day... that nintendo should either start making some more
darker and realistic games... to try and and compete with
PS2 en Xbox better.

Or (and this is my favourite option :-)), they should just
give up on trying to be one of the big 3 companies. Forget
about market-shares and aggresive marketing and all that.
Nintendo-games are unique and different, and they should
just focus on the audience that can appreciate those
qualities. So in other words they should become like apple.
They don't try to sell more apple-computers than pc's...
they just make their hardware for the people who appreciate
their stuff.

"I'd love to see some of your work

"

Fuck, i really should have a scanner :-(
(i'm sort of saving up to buy a proper computer (apple
preferably) with all the proper programs and scanners and
colorprinters and whatnot... i really miss having acces to
all that during my artschool-period.

I made a website with some work of mine back when i was in
artschool. But i'm getting really tired of it. Some of that
stuff is 4 years old... but ohwell, you can see it here i
feel my more recent work is alot better, hehe.

It's mostly written in dutch though, so if you have trouble
finding your way in there, i'll send you some jpeg's. But if
you just click everywhere you should be able to find them
anyway. I would love to see some of your work... so very
interested :-)

I think miyamoto was originally a painter, when he got given
the chance to start working on a videogame for nintendo
(which became donkey kong, as you probably already know)...
so you never know :-p

"I think one of my friends had that when I was little..
"

i don't think squaresoft made it... hm... not sure about
that though. You can find a review and lots of screenshots
here. Oddly enough it's not a very positive review
:-p I really have very fond memories of playing this game.

One of the nicest touches (such an original idea!) was when
i left a town in the game, and a while later i noticed a
strange object in my items-screen that i'd never seen
before. So when i used it, it turned out to be a letter from
one of the persons you met in the town, and it started "i
secretly put this letter with your belongings while you were
sleeping" ha! That was really cool :-)

I felt so sad when this game was over... like i was really
parting with a good friend of mine. If you ever get the
chance you really should play it! I really hope they'll port
this one to GBA!

"I really hope they port Paper Mario to the GBA;"

Not much chance of that ever happening mate, since it's a
N64-game :-p And of the best and prettiest one available on
the system if you ask me! It uses the N64's 3d-powers to
create a very believable world that appears to be made
entirely from cutout paper figures. It really looks quite
spectacular! When you enter a building the entire structure
just folds open to allow you to look inside. And when
figures in the game turn around to change direction... you
can actually see they are flat... very bizarre but very
beautiful! The story itself is sort of a tongue-in-cheek
version of the standard mario-story (princess gets kidnapped
by bowser). But they have some fun with that... it's the
only game that has ever made me laugh out loud. Especially
the levels where you control the princess as she tries to
escape bowser's castle are fantastic and hilarious! As much
of a must-play as majora's mask i'd say ;-)

I agree completely. I also think that this path would, in
actuality, be more profitable to them in the long run. I
see the Gamecube as an elitist system: It's true charms are
reserved for those with fertile imaginations and an
appreciation for genius. Nintendo should focus all it's
attention on internal development. Why? Here's a list of
the Gamecube games I own:
Zelda: Wind Waker
Super Mario Sunshine
Super Smash Brothers Melee
Metroid Prime
Starfox Adventures
Skies of Arcadia: Legends
Pikmin
I count 1 title created by a non-Nintendo exclusive
developer. One out of 7 $50 games that I've purchased in
the year or so since I bought a Gamecube.

I think anyone who's a nintendoholic would have to agree
that nintendos biggest asset is the ability to understand
the art of gameplay like no other...

As for the thought of paper mario being released on GBA,
that sounds great, there wasn't a local PAL release over
here for the n64 so I had to find an emulator+rom to check
it out. After playing it I couldn't believe that it didn't
get a local release. It was an rpg for the 64 that I had
allways been looking for but could never find...

"i don't think squaresoft made it... hm... not sure about

Right you are, I was thinking of Secret of Evermore. I've
never played the one of which you speak though I'll try and
keep my eyes peeled for it. Another tremendously fun game
with virtually no challenge was Legend of Mana for the
Playstation. It was the sequel to Secret of Mana for the
SNES.. Ever heard of it? The whole thing plays out like a
storybook with new pages for each chapter. You eventually
get to have your own house and garden that you can grow
different fruits and vegetables in with mixed results.
There's also a little stable where you can keep your
captured beasts and raise them to fight alongside you. All
the combat takes place in realtime from a side perspective a
la Final Fight, Streets of Rage, Double Dragon, etc. I wish
I had a decent computer so that I could download the ROM and
play it over again - Really a fantastic game.

"Not much chance of that ever happening mate, since it's a

Argh.. Right again. Though I've never played either of
them, what I meant to say was that I hope they port the
Mario RPG to GBA. Paper Mario sounds fantastic though,
wonder why I never came across it.

Just try to be more conservative; I only had 180 when I beat

Good luck, it's a really tough fight.

The end is nigh.
Why did you stop playing? You weren't bored were you?

As for me, I finally got a GBA SP today! I had to sever the
spinal cord of a small child to get it into my hands but boy
was it was worth it.. As soon as I got home I went into my
room, popped Mario Advance 3 in and turned off the lights.

Beauuuuty.
I watched the opening sequence, marveled at the panorama of
Yoshi's island and then turned it off. I'm going to save it
for bedtime. Man, "lights out" wouldn't have meant shit to
me if I had one of these when I was little.

Yes! Exactly... why don't they realise this themselves? :-p
If PS2 and Xbox are like popular music, nintendo would be
able to provide the videogame-equivalent of
underground-music.

"Nintendo should focus all it's attention on internal
development.
"

Well ehr... isn't that kind of what they're already doing?
As i see it the biggest problems lies with marketing...
nothing wrong with the games imo :-) Your list of games
looks excellent! At this moment i've only got mario sunshine
and pikmin. Next up is zelda, and after i finished that one
metroid... yup... the future looks good :-D I also think
Kirby's Airride could become really good (i've always been a
fan of kirby... since his first gameboy-adventure). I
recently learned that in that game you won't have to
press a button to race (like a gas-pedal)... the racing goes
automatically. I think you only use the controlstick and one
other button to control the entire game! Sounds like it

"I'll attempt sending you a few of mine via the temptuous
Hotmail. Hope they make it through to you unharmed..
"

I hope you didn't try already? Cause if you did, it didnt
work :-( I received nothing from you.

And about my work (thnx for the compliments!), it occured to
me it might actually be easier if you gave me your
postal-address. So if you're interested i could just send
you some photocopies or photographs or something like that.
(I think it looks better that way than on a sterile
computerscreen anyway). Let me know if you're interested.
Getting acces to a scanner might be a bit difficult for me
at the moment.

"Another tremendously fun game
with virtually no challenge was Legend of Mana for the
Playstation. It was the sequel to Secret of Mana for the
SNES.. Ever heard of it?
"

No... i've played Secret of Mana for the snes (beautiful
game, enjoyed it very much. The only thing i didn't like
were the other characters following you around onscreen all
the time. They always seemed to get stuck behind a tree or
something, and i had to go back to lead them after me. They
could have made them a little more intelligent!). But never
heard of a sequel. (it kind of figures since i've never
owned a playstation).

"your own house and garden that you can grow different
fruits and vegetables in with mixed results. There's also a
little stable where you can keep your captured beasts and
raise them to fight alongside you.
"

This sounds amazing though! Wow :-D That game really must
have had alot of depth! It's a good thing zelda is coming
soon to take my mind of all the other games i still want to
play ;-)

I have a new tv now (well, 2nd hand really, but it still
works excellent). Only now do i realise how weird and blurry
my old tv had become. Everything looks so much sharper now,
texts are easier to read, details more visible etc... it's
amazing! So... i'm all set to play the Wind Waker :-)

"Paper Mario sounds fantastic though, wonder why I never
came across it.
"

Yes, it hardly got any promotion here in the netherlands.
And i never found it in a store either (until about a year
ago (the gamecube was already released) when i suddenly
discovered it in the bargain-basket somewhere :-)).
But it's like nintendo didn't really realise how much
potential this game had... strange. The manual is also in
black and white and very short and technical. Not even
nearly as playful and fun to read as some of nintendo's
other manuals. very very strange.... this game deserved much
more! They should have just promoted it as the sequel to
Mario64... they've done unusual sequels before after all
(smb2)

"hey cabbog, what's all this "project" talk in this
thread?, is it some kind of competition for
zelda/metriod?
"

nintendo of europe organised a competition where you can win
a platinum gamecube+zelda and a zelda t-shirt signed by mr.
miyamoto :-)

All you have to do is create something from the zelda-games
in real life. I refer to my entry as "the project" to avoid
people stealing my idea ;-) Whaha!

before. But i took some therapy to improve my ehr...
"lichaamshouding". It's amazing how much it helps when you
sit up straight and relax your shoulders when typing :-) I
haven't been troubled by rsi eversince!

"did you know you were listed here? "

No i did not! Hehe, that's very cool! Thanks for telling me!
I'll be sure to rub that in morton's face next time he goes
on about how much more points than me he's got ;-)

cabbog, actually I just couldnt beat the boss so I took a
break for metroid prime for a while (a little too long, i
probably forgot how to play it) but I logged a few hours
into zelda and I just re-entered the forsaken fortress with
my newly acquired master sword. that last area was
incredible! (the part where you get the sword and everything
turns to color). hopefully I'll get some playing time into
metroid today and I'll report back either with new advances
in location in zelda or metroid...sometime soon.

in metroid prime, when your at about 60% and your in the
phazon mines, there's this huge space pirate who can cloak
and all... youve gotta fight him to get a new suit or
sumthin...

yeah, im stuck on the boss in the phazon mines, I only
fought him once but it was hard. I'll give it a whirl again
today and see if I can show him who's boss.

youve gotta destroy his shoulder / knee pads with
missiles/beam combos (or drop a super morph ball bomb under
him)... dont let him get too close he'll knock you out
badly... when he teleports just switch to X-ray and shoot
him with everything you've got, hell dissapear, do it again,
hell fight you again. Dont shoot the small pirates, just
avoid their fire as theyll get killed by his attacks later
on... will take you 2-3 rounds till you beat him, its not
that difficult when you do it right

"also think Kirby's Airride could become really good (i've
always been a fan of kirby... since his first
gameboy-adventure)"

Me too. I even had Kirby Pinball.. Hal Laboratories is my
favorite Nintendo developer, they've definately got the
magic.

"I hope you didn't try already? Cause if you did, it didnt

I haven't been able to get into Hotmail lately without
crashing the browser. They will come, it will just take a
while.
