***SPOILERS***

I agree on some points.

the linearity of the storyline is pretty annoying -
something like Deus Ex could still tell an enticing story
AND let you do what you wanted to do. it would've made this
game absolutely enormous. the "on-rails" thing just gets
ridiculous at times, seeing how the designers go at great
lengths to lead you down one, specific path. on the other
hand, at times it has also helped to know that there is only
one possible solution.

I didn't think the game was too short at all. it felt just
right. I hate singleplayer campaigns that go on and on and
on and on - I lose interest and stop playing.
I also feel that this can be easily remedied: play the game
in short bursts. I played over the last two weeks, never
longer than 2 hours at a time. that way you can really take
the time to inspect the gameworld too.

I agree on not feeling the mission was urgent. that annoyed
me too - I would be playing a level and then suddenly think
to myself that I couldn't even remember why I was
doing this or where was going. not good.

about the "not being able to go prone" thing, I really
couldn't care less.

what really annoyed me in HL2 was Gordon Freeman's silence.
I mean, people have said it verges on the ridiculous - they
are wrong, it IS very ridiculous. I think about 50% of the
main ingame characters make quips about Freeman's
non-verbosity and it just feels insane. this person is a
non-entity and it also contributes to the feeling of
non-urgency, he hardly seems to care about anything.

there wasn't much of a storyline in HL1 and there wasn't
much of a storyline in this part. but this gameworld was a
1.000.000x more believable. that to me is the most
impressive thing about this game, how real it all felt to
me.

point.

the end sucked. boo. reminded me of matrix 2.

people keep talking about how much the game scared them. i
have to say it didn't scare me at all. doom 3, however,
scared the shit out of me at first until you got used to it
all.

it would creep me out, simply because the gameworld is very
lively.

some guy gathered all the information about the HL-story he
could, through newspaper clippings that appear in HL2 and he
combined that with speculations and came up with a possible
HL2 timeline - which includes a lot of SPOILERS
and would tell a completely different story about what the
Combine actually are than I at least would have expected!

well, if it is actually correct, I would've liked that too,
yes.

it would've given the thing more backbone and would have
given you an actual feeling of urgency while playing, I
think.

yeah. somebody made a comment that during levels you wern't
really sure what you were doing - nod, i had that, too.

i think there's a lot of detail in the game that i missed
the first time around; might play it again. like i have
time, though - should be working (i say this as i post on
forums).

I deliberately played the game at "easy" - that gave me a
lot of time to actually look around me.

and even then I missed a lot of it. :)

Is the game any different on harder difficulty settings (I
played on easy, too) - that would intice me to play it
again, actually. Trying to spot g-man might, too.

Ok, well.

The intro really gripped me. I mean, really made me
excited.

They spent so much time on the intro and opening city.

Fantastico.

Then, we move on. I'm having fun and shit, although it's
still very, very linear...bleh.

Get on that airboat. Ok, this is kinda OK I guess, nothing
too fancy but I'm having fun with it.

Ok, I'm still on the airboat.

Ok, I'm still on the airboat.

Ok, when in the hell is this airboat shit over??

Finally gets over and I'm glad....ONLY TO BE PUT INTO A DUNE
BUGGY THAT NEVER ENDS.

I swear, the real things I look down on this game are, are
the damn dune buggy and airboat. It lasted so long I got
tired of playing the game and started just flying through it
to see just when the hell I can stop riding that thing. Way
way way too long for me and most ppl I talk to.

Gravity gun? Oh yes...self-explanator
awesomenesstotalgoodfunweeeee :)

The little "tricks" or puzzles? Eh, a few of them made me
go "kewl" and the rest were like "wow you are showing off
the physics engine work, ok ... durr"

Overall about 8/10.

Short, blah .. seriously, I'm getting sick of short games..
And I only play 1-2 hours a night (usually play 2-3 nights a
week!)

I like to take my time, play on hard, and go through
everything slowly and really take the game in.

Well, oh well. The graphics were decent for the most part.
Suited the games perspective and environment really well.

Weapons? Sad sad sad choices and lack of weapons.

Multiplay? I'm sorry, but HL1-MP blew away a lot of games
at the time. I had so much fun with the crossbow, and now
I'm left with nothing, NOTHING! Don't try and tell me CS:S
is HL2's multiplayer, cause that's bogus absolute shit! I
couldn't believe how pissed I got when I found out no MP in
HL2. And that console hack shit is NOT true multiplayer.
Oh well,

8/10 - enjoyed it :)

Ahh, forgot to mention. Storyline was absolute shit. I
felt like the game was really relying on physics to get me
immersed in the game, rather than storyline.

I had no clue what was going on.

What was up with that guy with the shotgun in ravenholm?
You just get through his traps and he gives you shotty. Big
whoop. The story lacked so much it really killed me.

Damn airboat and dune buggy really got me worked up.

Rocket launcher and crossbow were plenty fun, but I really
wished there were more weapons....especially alien
ones!!!!1one

is it any different on medium/hard, apart from it being
harder (both in the sense that is the game any different, or
do you feel different playing it - i.e. tend to be more
scared, hide more, run away more, etc due to less ammo or
whatever?)

I'm playing it through on hard and the enemies do seem to
think a lot more now. They hide better and actually use
their surroundings more :D

as far as I know, besides enemies being smarter, your
weapons do relatively less damage on "hard" - so you'll
spend and need more ammo.

the reason why is because up until that point, I had only
talked about the gameplay mechanics and hadn't revealed
anything about the actual story in halfife 2.... (in my
experience a spoiler is something that spoils the storyline)

yeah, there were no alien weapons, and no sniper rifle even
though there are parts where the enemies have them... thats
just bullshit.

the crossbow sucks for sniping, unless your target isn't
even moving, because the bolt travels too damn slow to hit a
sloth from 50 yards. didn't it seem a bit ridiculous that
you can't even use the hazard suit zoom and fire at the same
time? it would have at least partly made up for the total
lack of a good sniping weapon. Throughout the entire game,
the Magnum was my sniper rifle, at least that gun kicked ass
(but you couldn't carry shit for ammo for it).

Hl2 weapons = uninspired pieces of shit with no variety.

I would call "This time around, it seems that killing the
"mastermind" of the alien invasion has done absolutely jack
shit and now the "Combine" are in control. Not only are none
of the alien attackers (besides headcrabs which I don't
consider invaders because they were just lifeforms that got
sucked through like everything else) enemies in Half life 2,
only one of them, the Vortigaunts is still around, and
somehow they now speak perfect English rather than alien
grunts and are on YOUR SIDE."
to be a pretty big
spoiler, especially in respect to your definition of
spoilers!

WARNING: SATURATED WITH SPOILERS

It's been about a month since the release of HL2. I was
completely floored the first time I played it, especially
considering it runs smoothly on my 1.8 G processor computer
(though I also have 512 MB RAM).

I beat the game 3 times, and I'm playing through it now on
the Medium difficulty setting.

The physics, dialogue, lighting, detail, and realism were
all very impressive. Story-wise, I'd say HL2 is in a broad
sense the daughter of War of the Worlds and
1984.

There were a wide variety of enemies, particularly amongst
the different types of Headcrabs and Zombies. The Combine
were never short of reinforcements, so they were worthy
opponents. As for Gunships and Striders, you were pretty
much screwed if you were without rockets.

The weapons were quite practical, albeit limited. Even
though ammo was much more scarce than in HL1, one would find
use in all of them throughout the game. In particular,
Pherapods were a cleaver idea, although they were useless
without Ant Lions in your vicinity. The Gravity Gun is
perhaps the pinnacle of the HL2 arsenal. Stacking stuff,
launching stuff as weapons, pushing stuff out of the way,
creating makeshift bridges, and disabling generators were
all in the package. In addition, it's fun in the Citadel to
throw around insurging Combine soldiers and yank the
monitors displaying Dr. Breen out of the wall after the
Gravity Gun gets supercharged by the confiscation beams
rather than get vaporized with the rest of the weapons.

So yeah, I'm sure I'll be playing HL2 again and again for a
while, along with all the neat little mods that are
released. HL2 is sure to provide an awesome experience for
those who haven't played it before, even for people who
aren't really game nerds.

Natural Selection fully using Source would be sweeter than
sweet..

"Computer Games - Are there any plans to port the
original Natural Selection mod to Half-Life 2/Source?

Charlie Cleveland - We haven't spent much time with
the SDK yet (been too busy with current NS development), but
we've started to talk about NS:Source. We're probably going
to start porting it shortly after 3.0/3.1. Instead of
taking many months to create on big version, we will
probably port just the game over first, then start redoing
artwork, maps and gameplay a piece at a time. We want to
release smaller versions more frequently, and that's why 3.1
and the first NS:S version will come relatively quickly.

We've gotten really excited about some of the new features
we could implement on Source, like the Onos charge that
sends marine ragdolls flying, aliens bashing down weldable
doors, marines arriving to their map start via dropships,
etc. Once the loose ends are tied up on 3.0/3.1, we'll get
right to work. We've been staffing up in anticipation."
