"that Pikmin 2 will be using the same engine as Mario
128
"

that sounds really bizarre. I know i should probably
have a little more faith in nintendo after all these
years... but i can't really imagine how it'll be fun to play
pikmin with lots of mario's instead of pikmin :-p

And wario... well... his gameboy-games have been pretty
good. And i'll definitely be giving wario world a try (maybe
rent it or something)... but at the moment i can't say i'm
really looking forward to it.

You pinned the tail on the donkey. The only reason sailing
would get old is if you're impatient, in which case you're
probably playing the game for the wrong reasons. I love
traversing the vast distances from island to island...
Besides, a lot of things can, and do, happen in between to
keep in interesting i.e. weather, enemies, merchants, sunken
treasure, uncharted land, etc..

Mario : I've tried the toxic river level of which you speak.
After the 30 minute trip out to the pipe I died on the
first run, forfeiting my only life and last grain of
sanity..
I vowed never to return.

what I hate about mario sunshine is that there are too many
collecting red coins and the new idea for trading blue coins
in for shines is whack as well and still having to get 100
coins which are so few and far between...I will beat the
game by beating bowser but not by actually getting 120
shines.

Preach it girlfriend! Tedious = not fun.
I thought Bowser was way too easy and the ending cinematic
was horrible.. Especially the voice acting. I don't know
what I was expecting but it wasn't that. Let's hope
Nintendo's next Mario game is more suitable to my tastes.

"The only reason sailing would get old is if you're

exactly :-)
With zelda-games you need to have a wide imagination i
think... and look at it not so much as just a game but more
of an experience!

"I love traversing the vast distances from island to
island...
"

I have a feeling i'm going to love those parts too :-)

"Has anyone else bought the game yet?"

haha! I fucking wish! :-p
I've been reading alot about it though. I get really
pissed off whenever i read complaints about the graphics.
"ooh, it's a game for the kiddies" "shit it looks like a
cartoon"... grrr... i'd like to grab them by the shoulders
and shout in their faces how wonderful these graphics are
;-) It's like "realism" has become a holy grail for
videogamers these days. Instead of fun and imagination...
thank god for nintendo eh?

"too many collecting red coins"

the red coins i don't really mind... you always know you're
looking for eight of them, and they're generally not that
hard to find.

"and the new idea for trading blue coins in for shines is
whack
"

grrr... whoever came up with the concept of blue coins
should be punished severely! What a drag :-/
Each of the levels has THIRTY blue coins to find, and then
there are also tons of them in the overworld-level. It's
like instead of having to search for a 120 shines (which is
already alot), you're searching for a 100 + 8x30 shines!
With mario64 i thought it was kind of fun that there was a
hidden star to be found here or there... but jesus christ...
searching for all these blue coins is driving me mad! And
it's really not fun... was Miyamoto looking the other
way or something when his programmers were putting this part
of the game in? He usually always makes sure his games are
always fun to play.

"I will beat the game by beating bowser but not by
actually getting 120
shines.
"

well... hehe... i said the same thing a couple of days
ago... but now i've defeated bowser (crap ending indeed :-/
I thought the fight with bowser was plenty difficult
though... except you're not really "fighting" him. I
preferred grabbing him by the tail and swinging him around
:-D). But anyway... now that i've finished the game... i
still keep coming back to find more shines... i can't help
myself :-s... i don't think i'll ever be able to rest
properly until i've found 120 shines.

lol, yeah that sounds familiar... calling that level
difficult is a joke, calling it frustrating is an
understatement ;-)

Try this though: Have you ever been in the bonus-level that
can be reached from the boat, when it's sailing underneath a
bridge... there's a hole in bottom of the bridge you can
jump through. And you end up in some sort of flipper-game
with 8 red coins to grab.

I've actually been able to grab all the red coins in
there... the shine appeared, and when i jumped for the shine
i somehow slipped and fell down the hole of doom at the
bottom of the flipper-machine...

I had to turn of my gamecube, and take lots of deep breaths
to keep myself from smashing the tv with the controller :-)

I said I'd post my thoughts, so I'll do that now (I'll try
not to give anything away). Anyway, I think that Wind Waker
is the best game of its kind that I've played.

Gameplay - the gameplay is extremely varied, from sailing to
exploring to fighting enemies to trouncing through the
dungeons and solving the dungeon puzzles (most being very
unique and building off of each other in very innovative
ways. One that comes to mind is the flower to floating
lilypad thing in one of the earlier dungeons.) Nothing ever
gets boring. There are even several minigames that I didn't
expect to find (like the Battleship-type game that is
enhanced to a greater level by containing giant squids!).

Graphics - The graphics are pretty much flawless. The
cartoon look does actually make it easier to get into the
game as was stated when that decision was made. When I
first started playing I was a little disappointed by the
look of the first island - it looked a little too big and
empty and I hoped the rest of the game wouldn't be like
that. It wasn't. Going back to the first island after
playing a while, the island looked small in comparison to
the other places in the game and I didn't notice it being as
empty. Also, there are no seams in the graphics that are in
many other games. Everything moves flawlessly and smoothly
together and it looks just like a cartoon. The enemies are
impressive, especially the bosses; the explosions are
great; and the animation of everything else is exactly what
it needs to be.

Control - the control is good while walking around, in
combat, and while sailing. The only real problem I had was
with the camera control (and that was in a few boss battles
when the camera kept trying to look at the boss), but it
does seem to be the best of any game so far. The control is
handled very well in combat with Z-targeting as in OOT, and
the counter-attacks are nicely done. All of the scripted
events (such as feeding the fish and mice) work much more
smoothly than I had expected, and I've never h

All of the scripted events (such as feeding the fish and
mice) work much more smoothly than I had expected, and I've
never had it not work correctly. Also, just something I
noticed: When you go into first person view, looking down
actually moves the view slightly forward and then down, as
if Link was actually moving that way, rather than just
rotating the view down as in just about every other game
I've played. Oh, and I haven't found any way at all to mess
with the game (ie. falling off of the world or getting stuck
in a rock or a
house or anything like that), so the game is very tightly
put together.

Atmosphere - The cell-shaded graphics help a lot to add to
the atmosphere of the game, as do sounds (which are all
great). The storms while on the sea as well as on land are
very nice (though those tornados are very, very annoying).
However, I haven't played a part of the game yet that's
eclipsed the atmosphere of the beginning sequence to A Link
to the Past - Waking up in the middle of the night, and
hearing storm from the inside of the house, then stepping
outside into the storm and viewing the world for the first
time... also, hearing the rain from inside the castle; it's
probably my favourite moment in a game ever. The story is
good and gives you the motivation to do things, and it also
makes things more fun to think about (like what's really
under the ocean).

Overall, the game is very good and well-worth buying a
Gamecube just to play it.

I feel you. Just hearing this story makes me want to rip
the chords out of my piano.
Fuck.
Unless I get incredibly bored I don't think I'll ever go
back and round up the rest of the sprites; I'm taking enough
pharmaceuticals as it is, I don't need to be perscribed any
more. Let me know what happens if you make it through
unscathed.

That's because he really is. If you look up when you're
carrying Medli you can actually see her like you should. If
your back is against a wall it hinders you from being able
to tilt your vision upwards too.

>Graphics

The ONLY nit I could possibly pick are some very, very,
very, VERY minor and insignificant clipping problems that
pop up from time to time. It really is nothing at all and
happens so rarely it's probably not even worth mentioning.

>Camera

Another problem that's practically nonexistant. On the rare
occurance that it does position itself behind a pillar
during battle, you're usually targeting an enemy anyway and
the next actions you take are automatic. I constantly use
the 'free camera' mode and find it works perfectly and helps
a great deal.

To reiterate, this is the best game I've ever played. If
you live in Japan or the US and you don't own it yet, you're
either very stupid or very ugly.

Agreed. I still remember the smell of the room I was
sitting in when I first played that. The memory is branded
on to my brain for the duration of my mortality.. That 32
bit orchestra soundtrack was definately the best on the
Super Nintendo. As soon as that sword drops and pierces the
Triforce at the beginning I simultaneosly shit my pants,
blast backwards through my bedroom door and get flung down
the stairs.

Righteous.

"Let me know what happens if you make it through

"

I think it's too late for that ;-) This game has scarred me
for life.

It's just too much! I've collected a 117 shines so far...
and now i'm totally lost. Blue coins are sometimes hidden in
ridiculous places (like i accidentally discovered a blue
coin appears if you spray a totally unsuspicious looking
wall in the harbor... there's really no way of knowing where
to look. Plus the game DOESN'T keep track of how many blue
coins you found per level. There might already be some level
where i already found all of 'em, but yet i keep searching
those levels since i don't know there's nothing more to
find!)

I'm really desperate, so i also looked on gamefaqs.com...
but ofcourse they only have a long list of ALL the blue
coins. And my memory isn't so great that i instantly
recognise the ones i already found. In the long run, i'll
probably have to print the entire list, and check each of
the blue-coin-locations :-/

Well, I finally beat it last thursday(Zelda). The most
climatic final battle of all time and the best ending
ever...EVER. I fucking cried for pete's sakes! The last
time I cried at the end of anything was when I was 8 and my
dad had just finished explaining how sex worked! Needless
to say my heart has become hardened and calloused in the
long years since then, but then...Zelda... Zelda brought
life back to this old scrooge. There's undeniable color in
these once grey eyes and a new-found passion for living. I
believe in mankind! I believe in the strength of love and
hope and compassion... And most of all I believe in the
Power of Wisdom and Courage united.
This world has redeemed itself to me. I can finally die a
happy man.

A new Gamecube Zelda title is already in production at
Nintendo! Allegedly with a "darker" theme.. I wonder if
they'll keep the current graphics engine, branch off, or
reinvent it completely. Hopefully game journalists will be
treated to a sneak peek at this year's E3 and we'll get a
few screenshots and a small preview.
The suspense is unbearable!

"Let me know what happens if you make it through
unscathed.
"

You wanna know what happened? Last night i finally
collected the last of the blue coins, and traded them in for
the 120th shine sprite. As usual the game asks me if i want
to save. I click yes... and sit back to see what spectacular
reward nintendo built in the game for fully completing it.
absolutely nothing happened! I kid you not. It just
puts you back in the beginning spot (delfino plaza, infront
of the statue), and that's it. No fireworks, no extra
levels... nothing. Not even a conversation with Yoshi :-(

Then i figured maybe the ending would be improved if you
finish the game with 120 shines. And to my surprise... it
was! After the regular ending-sequence had passed... i was
treated to... a still picture of mario surrounded by all
the island-folks
... and at the bottom it said: "have a
relaxing vacation"... aaaargh! I've never been so
dissapointed in my life! Is that why i put so much hard work
into this game? :-/

I remember playing Super Mario World, and by exploring and
discovering all the secrets you were actually rewarded with
a trip to "star road", where you could play 8 bonus-levels.
It made me feel so great when i finally made it to the 8th
bonus-level, and it spelled out in coins: "you are a super
mario player!" haha. I really got the feeling i was the
first player to ever discover that hidden part of the
game... it was great :-) Those were the days.

sigh...

However... i did discover that one of the islanders when you
talk to him now says: "Could this be the end of the game? I
hope something else happens..." That was a bit strange and
suspicious... i wonder if there really is more to discover?
But after last night's dissapointment i can't really be
bothered to go back into the game and explore. Maybe some
other day.

letting the tent out? Sorry i don't know that expression ;-)
But i just read your news, and i am very excited! I've heard
the rumors, but i didn't know they had actually already
started work on it :-) GREAT news!

"Allegedly with a "darker" theme.. I wonder if they'll
keep the current graphics engine, branch off, or reinvent it
completely.
"

I'm willing to bet this game will have much more realistic
graphics. Link will probably look alot like he does in Super
Smash Bros. After all the complaints (and i've heard of
people actually not planning to buy this zelda because
of
the cartoon-graphics... idiots!)... i think nintendo
probably will make a concession towards "the people", and
produce a dark and realistic zelda that people seem to love
so much.

It will be a great game i'm sure... but i really really
really wish they would use the cartoon-graphics again. (it'd
be alot easier and cheaper to use the same engine too i
imagine... they've done it before on the N64 :-)).

But... at the moment i'm not going to get all upset about
the graphics possibly becoming boring and realistic... when
i haven't even played the wind waker yet ;-)

I think you finished it rather quickly! Maybe you are just a
better player than i am, or put more time into it. Or maybe
this zelda is easier? I know for sure all the other zelda's
haven taken me more than a couple of weeks to complete.

"a sneak peek at this year's E3 and we'll get a few

It's better that you don't my sweet, innocent Dutch friend.

>It will be a great game i'm sure... but i really really
really wish they would use the cartoon-graphics again.

Same here. No point in letting a perfectly good engine go
to waste after one title. Especially one as perfectly good
as this..
Especially when they've done it in the past. Especially
when it would be really awesome.

I think I probably have much less of a life than you do! I
played it for around 6 hours every day until I finished it.
It is a bit easier than previous Zeldas now that you mention
it - But there's also much, much more to do. There are
plenty of little side quests, treasure hunts, container
searches, and other miscellaneous things to do that aren't
at all essential to the game's completion. I also think
that the design and layout is much more smooth and polished
than any of the other previous Zelda games making going
anywhere a real treat on the eyes, and keeping you engrossed
in the game even(especially) during those long lonely nights
at sea.

"It's better that you don't my sweet, innocent Dutch
friend.
"

hehe ;-) Okay, i won't do a google on it to find out what it
means then :-p

"played it for around 6 hours every day until I finished
it.
"

lol, yeah at that rate you should be able to get through the
game really fast :-p

I won't be able to play it so often.

"But there's also much, much more to do."

:-)
Good! The little side-quests are often the best part of the
zelda games. Majora's Mask was particularly excellent in
that department. You spent so much time doing other things
than fighting through dungeons in the main quest. I loved
that! :-D

"There are plenty of little side quests, treasure hunts,
container searches,
"

I bet you need to collect 4 cointainer-pieces to receive an
extra heart again? :-/ I never really liked that. It'd be so
much more fullfilling if you could just find an entire full
heart-container. I guess nintendo just wanted more things to
discover... but finding just 1/4th of a heart is more
frustrating than rewarding imo. But the heart-containers
have been with us since link to the past, so i don't think
they'll ever go back to the way it was in the NES games. Oh
well... i can live with it.

"going anywhere a real treat on the eyes, and keeping you
engrossed in the game even(especially) during those long
lonely nights at sea.
"

damn :-p You're almost making me drool all over my keyboard.
I am sooooo looking forward to this game. Less than a month
now :-)

That's the only Zelda I've never played(excluding those
travesty cd games from some long obsolete system).. I never
had a Nintendo 64 myself and none of my friends that did
owned Majora's Mask. Is it as much as fun as Ocarina?
Argh.. I can't believe I've never played it. I'm supposed
to be an authority on these things. Oh well.. Maybe they'll
bundle it as a bonus disc with the next Zelda title.

Are you kidding? There's nothing like the feeling of
accomplishment you get when the fourth piece is finally
found!
Besides, the only time you really work hard enough to be
rewarded with a complete heart is after vanquishing a boss
character anyway. I've always liked it and I hope Nintendo
continues to implement it in future Zeldas. So nyeah.

Nintendo's games stoke the imagination. I mean, can you
imagine if we learned how to capture fairies in bottles?
Our army would be nigh unstoppable! The only thing holding
us back from world domination would be the 4 bottle limit!

"Is it as much as fun as Ocarina?"

Personally i thought it was even better. But everybody else
seems to think it was the weakest game in the zelda-series
:-p

"I can't believe I've never played it."

yes i'm also surprised to hear you haven't! Even though i
found the game cheap, it was all-in-all still rather
expensive because i had to buy one of those stupid expansion
packs to play it. But the game is sooo worth it :-D I guess
the atmosphere isn't as magical and special as in OOT
(everything feels a little more weird... like a
dream). But the concept of traveling back through time every
three days is just brilliant... and executed so perfectly.
You really get to know all the characters, and witness their
daily routine (over and over again). The game is absolutely
amazing...! At first it feels alot like OOT... but then at
some point you just start to realise the complexity. You can
just pick out any character in the game and follow them
around for a bit... it's fascinating. Like on the first day
at noon this girl goes to make dinner for her mother, which
she brings to her mother an hour later... who isn't hungry
so she just takes the food away again.

But then you travel back through time, and the next time you
experience that day you go to the mother's room first, and
you can read in her diary that she thinks her daughter's
food is so disgusting, and she's going to pretend not to be
hungry... haha... everything interacts!

Then when you follow the girl again (she works in the
hotel), you'll notice that at three o'clock sharp
(everywhere in the game are unique clocks with rotating
rings that actually work, once you've learned how to read
them you can actually tell the current time) this Goron
called Link (!) comes to check in, and the girl says: "ah mr
link, we've had you down for an afternoon-arrival".

So the next time you experience that day you come in the
hotel slightly before 3 o'clock, and since you're
called Link the girl gives you the key t

"the key t...o the room. (haha, and the goron has to
sleep outside in the rain ;-)).
The game is full of neat little touches like that.

-surrounded, I'm on here 22 hours of the day -- Why do I
never see your name in the list? Somehow you always manage
to worm in and out during those two that I'm asleep.

-pomme de terreeee, how far are you?

"I'm on here 22 hours of the day -- Why do I never see

i dunno... it must be the time-difference i guess. I had
noticed our zelda-discussions are always very slow because
we're never online at the same time :-p I always have to dig
up this thread to see what you wrote.

But yeah... a 2nd hand N64 should be pretty cheap by now.
You should definitly also play Majora's Mask if you're such
a huge zelda-fan!

That article was really interesting. I agree this game looks
very much like i always imagined miyamoto wants zelda to
look... right from the very first cel-shaded screenshots
:-)
(I've seen that very realistic early demo too... the fight
between link and ganon. Thought it looked horrible, and most
of all (like the article says) not fun!

The dutch nintendo-site put up another windwaker
quicktime-movie. Haha, it's about teasing the enemies, and
it looks so cool! Links hits an enemy, and the poor enemy
runs around in pain... oh my god... it all has so much
character! It's unbelievable.

First Ophecks and now you?! You gotta play it, george
described it very well, its very much like a dream. Grab
that up as soon as possible; you wont be disappointed
although you might realize even more how amazing the wind
waker graphics are compared to n64 heh.
