[Ophecks] MGS4

I'm about to start MGS3: Subsistence, the only game in the
series I haven't finished. The new camera is supposed to
make it so much better, so I expect to enjoy it quite a bit.

Never upgrade your computer or buy a game system for one
game.

well thats exactly what i did and despite it being a
WONDERFUL game, i don't think it's worth buying a console
just for a single game unless you have lots of expendable
cash.

also to add, i bought a hdtv yesterday and i'm replaying it
again to see it unfold how it should have the first time i
played it. sexy stuff.

Yes, and my name is in the topic title so it's true, so
there

Besides, at TGS they're going to announce Metal Gear Solid
5, Ninja Raiden, Sunny's Cooking S-s-simulator, Portable Ops
3 and a remake encompassing the events of MG 1 and 2 on the
MSX.

The best reviewer in the world has unleashed his verdict on
this tremendously overhyped game which keeps causing solid
snakes to appear in the pants of the fanboys. review

A lot like RE4, but better. Which is fine by me... I just
want this game to be to RE4 what RE2 was to RE1... same
formula, beefed up and tweaked to perfection. It also
retains the outrageously bad acting and script.

I finally got myself a PS3 on the release day of MGS4. It
finally tipped me over the fence to get a PS3, and whilst I
still feel shafted not getting the option for an 80gig DUAL
SHOCK controller bundle (it didn't get a local release over
here - grrr), I can't help but be impressed with Kojima's
efforts.
I have only just completed my first run through the game on
SOLID NORMAL. I couldn't keep up with alot of the storyline
details in the earlier series, but I still got a good sense
of closure in the end.

Highlights for me
*The graphics (and I'm playing it on a CRT!)
Some amazing environments to explore
*Shadow Moses revisited, (ahh the memories)
*A new take on the snake engine, with more playthings
*I don't know if it's just my dirty mind, but a lot of the
time I got the feeling that kojima's cinematic eye is in his
pants!

Gotta love the patented perverted Kojima humor

BTW, Metal Gear Online update today, a bunch of new maps and
shit and you get to play as Meryl and Johnny. So far MGO has
been pretty disappointing for me, mainly because the map
selection is weaker than the original and had no natural
settings, but it's getting better.

its just an E3 2008 gameplay trailer on youtube.

I might get a ps3 this weekend, I want to play MGS4,
Resident Evil 5 and fingers crossed, Final Fantasy XIII if
its better than the last 3 or 4 Final Fantasy games.

Just sold my Nintendo Wii, what a disappointment that was.

what's your name on mgo? i'm gonna start playing it more.
i'm a n00b to online gaming in general so the whole thing is
a bit intimidating.

i just finished a no kill, no alert (normal difficulty) run
today. obviously i saved and it was a good amount of trial
and error. got the bandanna and stealth so i can have a ton
of fun with that. i wish i had remembered to get the 2nd
beauty's statue, so i could have the solar gun, whatever
that is.

playing through the game again and seeing even more quirks
and things of the gameplay i'd have to give it a 8.5. i feel
bad for bringing a game down for the storyline, but it is
huge part of the game, and well it's pretty bad.

i love kojima, but i don't think he understands the
effectiveness of a twist. A TWIST, not a twist for every
aspect of the story. not to mention he took away a lot of
the legend from a certain important character and put it on
a character who just isn't as cool and legendary.

revolverjgw. The MGO experience has been... awkward. It's a
great game but Konami's infrastructure is beyond pathetic. I
have a feeling this game is going to suffer the same
premature death its predecessor did because it is being
totally mismanaged. Sony has their own solid online system
and Konami has ignored it.

Look into trying Warhawk, it's the best online game on the
PS3.

Je suis finished it!

God damn!

By far the best game to come out in a while, at least from
the other recent games I've played.

Played through the entire thing in 5.1, and the sound design
does indeed work quite well. You can hear the enemies
walking around and talking to each other, hear where they
are. I wish I had a dual shock, though, to see how it would
serve as a radar.

The camo suit kind of ruined the sneaking aspect of it for
me, but then again, the long-standing tranquillizer gun has
been doing so for a while anyway (although it's great to
have it for when you get spotted, and want to keep your
no-kills record straight (though parts of the game made it
impossible for me not to kill anyone, at least on first
playthrough. Most notably the scene where Drebin drives his
tank through gecko-infested areas and you have to shoot them
while fending off the zombie soldiers. Some of the soldiers
were just in the wrong place). Next playthrough, I'll try
manual style camo. Registering all the patterns, etc, seems
like a fun artificial gameplay extension anyway.

Though there are many great small details in it, I can't
help but feel that many aspects of the game are missing have
just gone missing. Most notably, all the extra things to
keep alert about from MGS3 (food, injuries, the possibility
of blowing up supply sheds, and giving soldiers bad food to
make them vomit, etc) are missing for no good reason.

When it comes to the story, it's a good one. It still
doesn't beat MGS or MGS3, but with the game being what it is
- a large trip down memory lane - it can't be expected to
best what it's referencing. Playing Shadow Moses again was a
definite high, and the timely reintroduction of the original
game music certainly stirred up nostalgic emotions.

That most of the story is told via lengthy cutscenes didn't
bother me much, but then I've always thought games shouldn't
compromise story-telling for instant gamer gratification.
The only problem I had was with the fact that some of the
game segments were too small, giving the game a sort of rail
shooter element (most notably in Prague or whatever; the
entire segment was too short, including cutscenes. Sure, it
wouldn't suit MGS to send Snake out on a series of go-fetch
"intelligence" missions within the city, but finding the
resistance members was too easy (I didn't really use any of
the items, I just walked forwards, and suddenly I found
one). That using the tranquillizer gun was the only way to
go forward (at least that's how it seemed on the first
playthrough) also kind of ruined the sneaking/spy gameplay).
The possibility of exploring more of Shadow Moses would also
have been welcome.

The constant Kojima humour and perversion also helped keep
the game floating way better than if it had taken itself
seriously all the way through. That Snake feels less stress
when sitting in the box, or that Akiba was really a hunky
loverboy were just some of the continuously amusing elements
of the game.

yeah, it's the same as all mgs games. brilliant the first
time you play it, but the incentive to go through it all
again isn't that great.

still, an amazing experience while it lasts.

Completely disagree, if anything I didn't even really play
the game correctly until my 2nd playthrough. My first was
messing around on normal with the toys, AI and tricks, my
second time was trying to do everything perfectly, no alerts
and no kills. Totally different, much better experience. Not
to mention there's 101 ways to approach every situation.

''The only problem I had was with the fact that some of the
game segments were too small''

Act 5 was a bitter disappointment for me. I come up to that
huge, mysterious place so psyched to explore it, and it's
like 3 linear rooms. Just a weaksauce way to cap the
gameplay/adventure.

I think it was the ending that pissed me off enough that I
didn't want to play it again.

I almost enjoyed Logan's Shadow on the PSP as much as I
enjoyed MGS4 which shouldn't be the case.

another problem with this game is that you have to work to
make it fun. you can complete it very easily just by running
from point A to point B. same thing applies to MGS3 but not
to 1 and 2. sneaking isn't really needed anymore only if you
want to play it that way.

Yeah, but thats just the completist attitude a lot of gamers
have. I never got into the whole "complete a game 100%
getting everything" mentality personally. Achievement and
trophy whoring does nothing for me, because I know my time
is better spent doing something else.

Saying that, I will give a game my undivided attention when
i'm playing it, but the majority of single player games I
will complete only once. The big exception was FF7 about 10
years ago, when I actually knocked up double the playtime on
the second run, mainly because there are a million and one
things you can miss in that game heh.

is it better than MGS2? no metal gear is better than 2.

I was quite disappointed with the game, story-wise. The
series had build up some great momentum from MGS2, with the
whole AI-deal (GW), the "postmodern" discussion at the end,
and the Wiseman's Commitee (especially considering they were
all dead). I wasn't too fond of some of the conclusions in
MGS3 either, and the concept of carrying an emotion into
battle, all seems a little silly. What I find basically
ruined it, is how everything is reduced into a family
affair. Why o why couldn't mr Kojima just stick with the
premises from MGS2. Snake is not "supposed" to be old, no
matter how symbolical it may be, and Raiden's not "supposed"
to be a cyborg-ninja either.

The first MGS to the PSX was a brilliant spy thriller with
some "shamanistic" influences ("Snakes don't belong in
Alaska", and all that talk), MGS2 managed to pull it off,
even though it got bit too X-men at the end. MGS3 had a
great atmosphere, and returned, in a sense, to its roots
with its spy/James Bond flirts. But I'm not so sure about
MGS4. Ah, well...

SPOILER

I liked the idea of the patriots being this metaphysical
conglomeration of collective war/political memetics, given
some form of sentience as an ethereal alien identity which
resides in the white house. Now THAT was interesting. And
with MGS4, it's just some fucking computer AI torn between
(as Aphex Acid put-) 'family affairs'.
