Haha, yeah.

[Smoking warning]

I think I'll have to get myself a ps3 now.. but I really
want a dual shock 3, and it doesn't seem like they're out
here yet... I guess I'll just wait. Maybe the MGS4 bundle
will come out here as well...

I can probably just get a Sony Bravia while I'm waiting so
that I'll be able to utilise 1080p from the get-go.

MGS isn't in 1080p I don't think. Still worth getting a
massive sex TV for it though.

Yeah, I know.. although the wiki page lists 1080p among the
native resolutions. Calling it native basically means it
isn't upscaled by the ps3, but it could just be some
misunderstanding as well.

I need a new TV anyway, and for the midrange LCDs, the
Bravias are supposed to be top notch.

I'm finding it very hard to find the will to progress past
areas, it's just too fun messing around with the
enemy/friendly AI, the new moves, the gear, the weapons,
playing cat and mouse with Gekkos, exploring every nook and
cranny, calling Otacon constantly to see what kind of trivia
I can learn, practicing sneaking and going on random
rampages (I know that's n00bish)... experimental players are
going to have a field day with this game. I've been playing
for almost 4 hours and I haven't reached a boss yet. At this
point I'd be halfway through MGS2. Granted I'm an unusually
slow and curious player.

There's no way the game is native 1080p, likely not even
full 720p, but the image quality is excellent. Average
texture work, but the graphics overall are crisp and smooth.
Few jaggies, decent framerate, and above all superb art
direction.

Yeah, I know.. I was amazed at the speed my mate seemed to
use going through the first areas I saw. I would've been
crawling all over that place, tazing guards, etc.

I'll probably spend lost more than 30 hours on the game...

15 hours, 3 of 5 acts completed, I need and want to get some
complaints out of my system

-Act 3 falls into MGS2 territory... more watching than
playing. Very fun (and surprisingly unique) to play, very
fun to watch, but the rhythm is noticeably off from the
perfect pace of the first two Acts. It's very short and not
much to do.

-VR Missions are a glaring omission... in the other games
they were fun even with the clunky old controls, but with
the new mechanics, they could have been incredible. MGS4-
Subsomething, please and thank you

-as usual, there's some pointless dramatic exposition that
adds nothing to the mythos and just slows things down... not
as much as MGS2, but more than MGS1 and 3... and one major
revelation in particular rubs me the wrong way... a very
important character doing something that I just find hard to
swallow given what I knew about him/her. Feels poorly
thought out by Kojima, but maybe that will change. Still 2
Acts to go, and it's already the best game ever so I'll give
it the benefit of the doubt

It's also weird how the game starts off with perhaps its
least visually impressive areas... usually games try to wow
you right away, but this one keeps getting better looking.
Act 3 was jawdropping. Which is partly why I wanted more.

Haha, you're devouring it!

Have you been outside today/since you got it?

No VR missions? I remember seeing something on the menu that
I interpreted as VR missions, or at least something like
it.. practice or shooting range, perhaps, but I can't
remember...

It's impossible to put the controller down. I'm not moving
until I beat it. Twice.

And the game has a VR Range, which is interesting for about
5 seconds. :_-(

And on that note, wow, this game has extremely explicit gun
porn, tons of fun to customize and utilize your weapons. I
confess I haven't been as stealthy as I should be... it's
hard to resist how good the gunplay feels, I killed exactly
200 people in the first Act alone. But I'm looking forward
to a pure-stealth run on a higher difficulty.

The highest award is for completeing the game with no kills
and two alarm trips. Does that seem impossible?

Kind of hard to say because of the way I've been playing,
helping out against the PMCs and experimenting with the
weapons. The game gives you plenty of options and tools I
haven't played around with, but I think it seems pretty
reasonable if you know the maps, the tricks, and have lots
of patience. I'm definitely going to try, and probably going
to fail.

There are some rail-shooting segments where it seems like it
would be tricky to beat without killing anyone. I remember
in MGS3, during the final chase you could tranquilize guys
in jeeps and flying platforms and wouldn't be penalized when
they crashed into a tree and died, probably a work-around
like that here too.

Fuck. Both IGN and gamespot just gave the game a full 10
points. Seriously. Even if at face value that sort of rating
is mildly ridiculous (although not as ridiculous as
everybody giving GTA4 a perfect score), it's still
impressive.

I think PS3 has just jumped one notch from "maybe" to "hell
yes!" in my books.

It's tough to review a game like this, that makes no
compromises whatsoever for casual players or the
uninitiated. It's not even close to being perfect, but it is
what it is, and there's not much else like it to use as a
yardstick. Some of the reviewers, like the IGN guy that
wanted to give it an 11, might be being a bit hyperbolic.
But it's hard to blame them, because he's the kind of player
this game was tailor-made for.

I beated it and I'm psyched and ready to go again on Big
Boss Hard with a new modus operandi... pure stealth. This
game has immense replay value. The care and thought they put
into the gameplay is 10+

And of course the ending is suitably melodramatic and
heavy-handed and confusing and maybe a little bit crazy by
the end. Maybe Kojima could use a more discerning editor,
but it's a lot of fun to try to make sense of, and there's a
couple of moving moments.

SPEAK OF THE DEVIL

Ok.

The Devil is the title given to the supernatural being, who,
in mainstream Christianity, Islam, and some other religions,
is believed to be a powerful, evil entity and the tempter of
humankind. The Devil is commonly associated with heretics,
infidels, and other unbelievers.

The name "Devil" derives from the Greek word diabolos, which
means "slanderer" or "accuser".[1] In mainstream
Christianity, God and the Devil are usually portrayed as
fighting over the souls of humans, with the Devil seeking to
lure people away from God and into Sheol. The Devil commands
a force of lesser evil spirits, commonly known as demons.
The Hebrew Bible (or Old Testament) does not assign this
level of personification to the devil; there, the Adversary
(Ha-satan) is a servant of God whose job it is to test
humankind.

This entity is commonly referred to by a variety of names,
including Abbadon, Angra Mainyu, Satan, Asmodai, Beelzebub,
Lucifer, Belial, and Iblis. Many other religions have a
trickster or tempter figure that is similar to the Devil.
Modern conceptions of the Devil include the concept that it
symbolizes humans' own lower nature or sinfulness.

People put the concept of the Devil to use in social and
political conflicts, claiming that their opponents are
influenced by the Devil or even willingly supporting the
Devil. The Devil has also been used to explain why others
hold beliefs that are considered to be false and ungodly.

If I bought a ps3 now, I would only have MGS4. If I buy it

So I can wait.

I should also borrow my mate's PSP to finish MGS Portable

My second time through, I realize now that the
underutilization of the codec makes my blood boil, I was
hoping to mess around with it. I'm glad the mandatory
interruptions have been cut down to almost nothing, but
there's nobody to talk to, there was no reason to take away
the optional stuff. MGS3 in particular had hours and hours
of optional codec conversations with your support team. Some
good information on the gameplay and some charming dialogues
and characterizations. This game has none of that. You can't
even call Drebin to discuss the 9 million weapons you pick
up. WTF?

Even worse, it was also the conversations I had with the
MGS3 support team that convinced me that one of this game's
biggest twists just seems very weak in hindsight.

I've just killed the Laughing Octopus and it was so good
that I played 3 hours straight after that and now I'm filled
with many enthusiastic yet disturbingly pompous feelings.

It's my first MGS game and I admit there is a lot to like
about it. The staging is not nearly as preposterous as I
expected. Yes, it's filled with a lot of groaning of an
uberveteran who's seen it all and campy as hell dialogue,
but it's not bad enough to distract from a spot-on gameplay
and very "real" graphics.

I've seen some cutscenes from the third installment and they
were much, much worse. Cringeworthy actually.

Also, I like Kojima's logo.

MGS3 still might still be my favorite MGS! Of course it's
pulpy camp, but that's part of the charm.

Have you played the 4th act yet? That act is nigh shameless
unadulterated fan-service that would even make Super Smash
Bros. blush and I wonder what someone with no prior MGS ties
would think of it. It just seems to me like almost
everything that goes on in that act would mean nothing to
someone who hasn't played MGS1.

This game is absolutely fantastic. EPIC. The ending isn't
quite as phenomenally winded as the ending
sequence(s) of MGS 2 & 3, but what you loose there you gain
in narrative structure / cutscene. (esp. if you wait for the
credits).

Perhaps thats not important to some people, but with that
said, the gameplay is amazing as well. Does anyone else
think it's poetic that Raiden is a fucking badass now?

I was really hoping to be able to play him. Perhaps it's
too soon to tell if he's an unlockable. The official
strategy doesn't mention it, but they suggested how much of
an "incredible" feat it would be if one was to defeat the
game (undetected) in the tailored suit you get after playing
through once.

Kojima said in a recent interview that this marks the end of
Snake's story, but not necessarily the end of the franchise,
nor the absolute withdrawl of his involvement. I'm really
hoping we get to see mysterious 10 year absence, as he moves
from pussy-pawn to kickass ninja cyborg. He looked so
fucking cool.

Er, a couple edits:

-The official strategy *guide* made the comment about
the suit.

-I was talking about *Raiden's* mysterious absence
and how great it would be to see that as a game, being able
to play him as a cyborg ninja.

PS- I'd also like to know how he can control lightning, by
the time of his last fight scene.

(sorry, I was typing too fast in the previous post.)

(Spoilers for people who haven't beaten it)

Yes, Raiden's history post-MGS2 is left purposely vague. How
and why he came to be like that, what he was doing all that
time... I really do think there's going to be a game based
around him to explain the things this game left extremely
vague. He did an awful lot of important things for the story
that are only briefly touched on.

Another Metal Gear game is a given... there's even a
fourth-wall-shattering cutscene for some random plot point
that shows screenshots from all the canon MG games, with a
couple of empty slots that say ''in progress'' or something.
There's more to come, no doubt, to fill in the gaps leading
up to MGS4 (which really is the chronological end of the
story, I would think).

The ending was weird. I don't know what to think of the very
last scene, even by MG standards, a bit farfetched. ''Epic''
is definitely the word though. Act 5, even with its paucity
of gameplay, was really well done. The split-screen
microwave corridor was intense, and the fist fight on Haven
was amazingly presented. Hard not to grin when Snake and
''Ocelot'' stab EACH OTHER with the syringes. Alpha fucking
male.

Hey, did anyone see all the weird shit that comes up during

Let the graveyard sequence keep playing and don't hit start.
Right when Snake goes to do the deed, it cuts to these
weird "commercials" some of which are kind of interesting!

From a literary standpoint, it's really quite amazing how
Ocelot becomes a bit of a well conceived hero.

For all the convoluted mess that this story has become over
the years, it really ended up turning out nicely and
addressing everything fully.

I played through 99% of the game thinking that it was dumb
that Ocelot himself had been left out and wasted. But during
the fight with who you thought was Liquid, you could slowly
see him slowly turn back to Ocelot... even the lifebars
change to reflect that thought, another brilliant
fourth-wall move. Then he gives you the little hand gesture
from MGS3 as he dies... good shit.

Then Big Boss explains everything, and it's a bit insane,
but yeah, it does sort of work and does some justice for the
character.

Did anyone else have a moment of near sadness at the very
end, at the prospect of never being able to play this series
again in this form?

I did. But then again, I really got sucked into the story.

I can't stop thinking about Raiden.

Also, did anyone think it was noticeably hard playing the
MGS1 PS1 "dream" leading into act 4? The shift in game play
through me off for a second or two.

All I have to say is if GTAIV received a 10 from many
reviewers, and it did, then MGS4 deserves about a 13. This
game pushes the limits like no other in graphics, music,
style, storytelling, everything. I just received my first
real glimpse of new-age Raiden last night in his sword fight
with Vamp....it's not often I vocally respond to video when
I'm watching something alone, but in this case I had to say,
"Holy shit this game fucking rules!" It didn't hurt either
that brilliant video was on the tail end of the amazing
fight with Laughing Octopus. I cannot wait to see what else
this game has in store.

R1 fires your bullets, R2 launches the grenades (or the
Masterkey shotgun attachment). Dunno how effective that will
be on that bitch though.

My second time through the game has been as enjoyable than
the first... the game really shines with the difficulty
maxed, forces you to measure your movements and use gear
that you may not have needed the first time around. And
there's SO many optional tricks. I just wish there was
another... 3 or 4 acts.

That part really showed the quantum leap the gameplay has
made. MGS1 still has top-notch atmosphere and style, though.
I played it a few weeks ago and it was still compelling.
