Soundblaster Live 5.1 - should work fine, i have it too.

as long as the sound in ESIV is not something super-duper
out of this world

My system's similar to yours - Athlon XP 2800 @ 3200 speed,
1GB, nV 6800GS overclocked a bit (i think it's more or less
similar to the X800XL). I hope it plays at 1280x1024 alright
- not too bothered about AA or such. Actually, if I can have
HDR lighting I can't have AA, possibly...

2 more days at least for me. won't be able to play at the
weekend either!

It sounds as though it's been thoroughly xboxed though, what
with the large clumsy menu and interface. to be expected,
really.

staz: hahahah, that must have been tedious. :D

csl: Yeah your system is roughly the same as mine, though
yours is probably a little better. One thing I am confused
about is that in the settings, it wont let me turn on HDR
lighting. it says its unsupported (the box is greyed out),
but I don't understand why because I'm pretty sure I have
HDR turned on in HL2. I installed the newest ATI drivers the
night before I got the game, and it popped up a severe error
message but the install still finished... so I'm trying to
figure out if perhaps my drivers are corrupted, and if they
are, it might explain the spell-animation slow-downs.

i have had a few problems with bad drivers from ati so its
very possible. also does anyone know how big a difference
there is between the radeon 9800 256 and the x800 256? i
have a feeling im going to have to buy a new video card,
which is going to make school in the fall more tight.

How's the murder and crime? If I kill someone or steal
something, is there an omnipotent force that knows I've been
bad, or can I get away with stuff if it goes unobserved? I
heard it was the former but I hope not.

(I don't plan on being bad, per se, but sometimes you have
to go all Robin Hood to get what you want)

I saw some of the demos and it looks effin great. For those
of you who've played this: When you travel between cities,
are there random monsters, scattered treasure, or anything
else interesting besides eating deer meat and mushrooms?
For example, if I wanted to play as some sort of wild man
who just lives off the land and fights goblin encampents to
hone my skillls, is that possible or even fun? Can you jump
from tree to tree? Build a hut? etc...

I generally gravitate into the hero role, too.

it is strangely more satisfying, generally. we've all been
programmed nice 'n sweet.

for the Europeans and other people who haven't got the game
yet, gamespot recently e-broadcasted 12 hours of Oblivion
play right after the game's release.

you can see highlights here..

haven't watched myself yet, so maybe it's awful!

well, half the fun is just hopping on your horse and riding
randomly about the countryside, finding
dungeons/caves/encampments/ruins and plundering them. :) So
yes, you can easily live off of the land. Theres no
tree-to-tree jumping so far, or any real way to manipulate
trees/sticks/logs, so dont get your hopes up about building
a fort in the forest. although that would be fucking sweet.

when you are wandering through the countryside, you often
find wild indigenous animals for that area
(wolves/deer/bears), as well as the occaisional goblin I
think. I'm very NOT far into the game, and Ive seen
screenschots of minotaurs roaming the forest, so that'll be
fun. minotaurs in the forest means lots of other big baddies
could also be roaming randomly as well.

The most enjoyable thing for me so far, is being a sniper
with the bows. I've already mastered leading the targets as
well as aiming it slightly upward to give it the right arc.
The physics of dropping a goblin with an arrow to the chest
while he is leaping at you to attack you from 4 feet away is
a beautiful sight to behold in oblivion.

Ophecks: From what I can tell, any items that you
steal can only be sold to the theives guild. stolen goods
have a red hand imprinted on the icon to show you which of
your stuff is legit and which is boosted. The thing that
sucks is that if you murder someone in one town, and then
fast-travel to a town 1000 miles away, everyone there will
already know what you did. So yeah I think it's still a bit
like morrowind. However, no one will notice stolen goods on
your character as long as you steal them completely out of
sight.

yep, as staz mentions, you can't have AA and HDR,
only one or the other. No idea why? Perhaps that's another
Xbox trait ported over...

Im well known for not buying anything and downloading
everything, you name it - ive downloaded it without
purchase, but i respect these guys and the amount of work
they've put into it (and since i actually do have money now)
i will be buying this (the collectors edition)

I love the sence of freedom in this game, i just hope it has
many little quests and is as big as the other game to
explore and things!

oh and for anyone thinking about downloading it, you can buy
it with p&p for £30 for the collectors edition which
includes many tihngs like the map, a big booklet, an extra
dvd which contains the making and concept artwork @
play.com

Thanks luv. I'm back already. I've just been tweaking my
facial features, so I've not started yet. I've pretty
accurately reproduced my considerable nose, I'm proud of
that. The face creation feature is like a game unto itself,
it is.

yeah, its cool that you get so much control over how you

that kinda defeats it a little bit.

( + )
HDR lighting and all that... when it gets dark, it doesn't
just LOOK dark, it FEELS dark. Dig? I can feel the night,
and I feel really cozy when I go into a nice house (The
Priory, for example). Beautiful atmospheres. Makes it hard
to breathe sometimes. BTW, where can I get a torch or some
other means of illuminating my surroundings? I saw lots of
them in the sewers but I didn't take any.

( + )
It's more interesting (and much prettier) to go off the
beaten path in this game. There's more stuff to find and
more things to see. I've found a TON of caves and things
tucked away. I'll go back later to terrorize whoever's in
it.

( + )
the fighting is a big improvement... hitting something
actually hits them, no ifs ands or buts. It's still
simplistic, but at least it's satisfying.

( - )
third person view. Call me a rube, but I like to use third
person view often. I like seeing my ever changing visage,
and I don't like the way first-person view in this game has
''floating head'' syndrome. But the animation for your guy
in 3rd person borders on pathetic and it feels like I'm ice
skating through the fields and meadows. Ice skating through
fields and meadows is not immersive. It is unimmersive.

( - )
some jarringly low quality textures. I'm not a graphics
whore, but occasionally you'll see a faraway hill that looks
like it came straight out of Mario 64, and it's funny.

( - )
When I'm on my horse (BTW the horse feels like crap compared
to, say, the horse in Shadow of the Colossus, the physics
are just... off), the game loads the areas a bit too often.
There's supposed to be some fix for this, hope it works.

(+/-)
The music fits but it's so workmanlike. It's just there,
pleasant and devoid of personality. Thankfully I loaded my
360 with far superior classical music and now I'm raisin'
the roof.

I haven't really done much, except run around smelling
flowers and killing anyone that's different from me, so
these are all just shallow first impressions. Overall, I <3
it

The 360 has AA and HDR, nyah nyah.

Weathered- if you want to be a man of the land, I don't see
why you couldn't be. The world is... alive. I've collected a
lot of venison using my leet deer-stabbing skills. I've also
traumatized many goblin children by killing their goblin
parents and taking their goblin goods.

Well it didn't take long for the first big bug/exploitation
to be uncovered. I think this will mostly come in handy for
people playing the 360 version, which doesn't have a console
or anything.

-In the Talos District of the Imperial City, find Dorian's
house
-Think evil thoughts
-Enter Dorian's house
-Talk to Dorian
-Engage in speechcraft
-Bribe him repeatedly (the more money you give him, the
better, so make your wallet fat before you do this)
-Kill Dorian
-search his body
-take each item individually, except his gold
-when his gold is the last thing remaining, take it
-and keep taking it and taking it and taking it, because it
doesn't run out. The more money you bribed him with, the
more money you'll get each time you click ''take'', but his
gold won't go down. I had to sit there tapping the A button
for a while, but now I'm a multi-millionaire.

Or at least, I have a save in which I'm a multi-millionaire.
I still plan on continuing on the old fashioned way, because
the feeling of being rewarded for efforts and building up
yourself is kind of the whole point of the game. But at
least now I can have an alternate save where I can just pimp
myself out with the finest designer arms and armors, and buy
some mansions and shit. I tend not to play these games long
enough to become a Godlike character, so it's all groovy.

Some funny debates about video game morality have broken out
over this. I don't feel too bad about it.
