oh gosh I just spent what basically for me is quite a wad of
money on a new graphics card.. it's actually making me
hyperventilate slightly, as I really don't have the money
for this.. and it's only a Radeon 9600.. now I hope I can
install it, seeing as I'm not sure this computer doesn't use
PCI-Express instead of AGP.

also jesus: the xbox 360 version of the game got a whopping
9.6 over at gamespot (whose reviews I generally
respect the most) - no element scores below 9..

I got the 360 version today, and this game is fucking
unbelievable. Gorgeous graphics, amazing sound (Jeremy Soule
is such a great composer!) and an element of exploration
that is unparalleled. There are some weird glitches like the
sound cutting out at some points, once I even fell through
the floor and drowned inside a block. But it's all good.
It's all very fucking good. Atmosphere is oozing and my
pants are soaked.

has anyone encountered a problem where the game exits for no
apparent reason? his computer matches and surpasses the
recommended specs on everything but the video card, which is
a geforce 6600 instead of a 6800, but since the 6600 is the
recommended and his computer has a few more ghz than the
recommended we figured it'd weigh out somehow..?

it has crashed a few times for me, but never at a really
frustrating point.

it does crash a lot when I quit the game, which is strange,
but doesn't matter that much, ofcourse.

I was playing the game on my friends super computer over the
weekend, and I must say the game feels incomplete in a few
places. A lot of animations are fucked up in 3rd person
view...they say you aren't meant to play in 3rd
person, but why would they put it in at all if they didn't
plan on finishing it?
Fighting is cumbersome at times, the controls seems a bit
weak and aren't always responsive (i.e. switching from
attacking to blocking). I haven't gotten very far, but
from what I've seen leveling isn't very exciting; you choose
three attributes to put points in (i.e. strenth,
intelligence, etc.) and that's that, no new skills or spells
or chocolate cupcakes.

But yeah, it's fun to run around and junk...

randomly closes the application...

I forgot to complain about two things:

1.) Character customization is great for the face, I spent
hours tweaking my character's peanut-shaped face...but then
there were absolutely no options at all for the body. Not
even the rudimentary skinny, normal, fat.

2.) I was very frustrated when I gave the inn lady money
for lodging and went to my room only to find that I had to
pick the lock...which I couldn't, even after
destroying about 100 picks.

the fighting is done pretty well, I think. it's a big
improvement over Morrowind anyway.

3rd person is handy for certain situations, like if you want
to jump over a tripwire. I wouldn't for the life of me know
why anyone would want to play it in 3rd person, though. it's
much more immersive in 1st.

leveling isn't very exciting, no. then again- personally I
don't play games like these to be able to level - frankly, I
don't really care. you learn skills by using them in the
game and by getting training from experts. similarly, you
get new spells by training your spell skills and by buying
them. overall, it's a pretty good levelling system because
it's based on direct actions and not on a experience point
system based mysteriously on whether you finish a quest or
not.

the character custimisation is a bit silly - you can design
every square inch of your face but nothing about your body.

the inn thing sounds like you went for the wrong room or the
game bugged out.

The problem with ''sandbox'' games like this, and it's
pretty unavoidable, is that it's like a compilation of
dumbed-down mechanics and aspects from more specialized
games. You can play as a thief/ninja/spy, but the sneaking
is sloppy and undeveloped compared to a Splinter Cell,
Hitman or Metal Gear. You can be an all-out warrior, but the
combat is uninvolved and requires very little skill. This
isn't Devil May Cry. So certain aspects of these games
always feel ''incomplete'' and sort of unsatisfying,
especially if you compare them to more focused games.

I guess the real appeal of games like this is the
convergence of all the aspects and such. There's so much to
do and lots of ways to do it. There's nothing here that
other games don't handle ten times better, but man, there's
something to be said for sheer, shameless size and scope.
And I'm finding the quests and world way more interesting
than Morrowind.

As for the levelling, yeah, it's tedious and not fun. A lot
of people are just taping their control sticks forward and
walking away for hours while their guy levels up their
Acrobatics and Sneaking! And why not, I guess... it's not
like levelling that crap up presents any sort of interesting
challenge anyway.

Overall the game is fucking awesome, although to be honest,
I've got my difficulty slider pretty low and have eschewed
pointless item collection quests (and I'm a millionaire). I
originally didn't plan on doing that, but I realize I've
grown really tired of some of the more redundant RPG
conventions... when I ignore them (and it's easy to in this
game), the game chugs along, always keeping me busy seeing
cool things and hearing different stories, and the
experience as a whole is great. I'm enjoying it more and
more the deeper I get.

that doesn't make sense - leveling isn't much fun, so lets
make it even more tedious.

what's against just playing the game, having fun and then
discovering now and then that you've leveled up?

I run it at 800x600, but then I can crank up some other
stuff, like reflecting water, reflecting windows, etc.

it looks great to me, slows down a bit at times, but not a
lot.

I dunno, I like Thief a lot but it's a different experience
from a something like Splinter Cell, which is all stealth
with no miscelleanea. I probably like Deadly Shadows more
than any Splinter Cell game, but the stealth isn't as
polished. Lighting is less advanced, jumping is floaty,
enemies are morons and too easy to take down and survive
encounter with, etc.

Yeah the sneaking is cool, just that... even THAT is
governed by arbitrary statistics, statistics that aren't
challenging to level up. Like, I made the mistake of making
my guy a big strong dude, and people catch me so easily. The
dipshit Cultists in the sewers didn't see me, but they knew
I was there because my I hadn't done much stealth up to that
point. Whereas some people have characters that are almost
invisible in broad daylight, merely because they've spend a
lot of time building up their stealth by standing behind
people, crouched, and walking back and forth for an hour.
It's just dumb and RPGish.

(but it's still very fun, sneaking is never not fun)

It's not tedious to pull tricks like that, they can go jack
off and come back a superior thief! Problem is, to get to a
point where you can do a certain thing satisfactorily, you
don't really need to overcome obstacles or actually improve
YOUR skill, the game just calculates how many menial tasks
you've done and stuff and awards you skills even if you
happen to still suck as a player.

I can see why people enjoy levelling up, but I personally
don't really get anything out of it anymore, and a lot of
people are just exploiting a flawed system because they
don't either. This hasn't affected my enjoyment of the game
at all though, I'm getting what I wanted out of it, it's
fun. The game lets you do your thing, and if your thing
isn't hardcore RPGins anymore, it's cool.

Agreed, that's what I'm doing. But that doesn't mean the
game doesn't have flaws that need to be fixed in the future.
Morrowind had a myriad of them, and a lot of them were
addressed.

I'm really just an old lady, I like to bitch. I could, would
and have gone on for 10 paragraphs about what the GTA games
need to improve on, but the bottom line is I've had as much
fun playing that series as any. I don't want to play games
if I can't bitch about them and look forward to the day when
they suck less. Sandbox games, man. Sandbox games.

well, it's not so much about there being bugs - bugs are
annoying and should be fixed.

it's more that when people find exploits that they'll spend
a lot of time using those, which kind of beats the point why
you're playing the game in the first place, for me at least.

I think some people are missing the point of the leveling
system in oblivion. If you're running around in circles
trying to level up athletics and things of that nature, then
you're still playing oblivion like a traditional "kill this
monster, gain 500 exp" RPG. The beauty of it, to me, is that
I can just go about my merry way in the gameworld, doing
whatever I please, and I never have to stop and check some
arbitrary number like 3502053/3770505 experience until next
nevel. Which is good for me since I am compulsive about
checking stuff like that. I just like how natural leveling
up feels, and the AI difficulty in the game scales to
roughly your level, so you can see that Bethesda really
meant for there not to be any long and tedious "leveling up
times" just so you can beat that next boss, like in
countless other RPGs. Not saying you all aren't entitled to
your view, but I'm just surprised more people don't see the
leveling system as revolutionary.

Fair point. Personally I think the real-time,
more-active-and-interactive-than-ever gameplay just doesn't
gel with some of the archaic and arbitrary character
building elements. I wish there was a more intuitive way
rather than ''do stuff and your guy will automatically be
less visible somehow, even if you still suck''. But I don't
have an alternative solution and I'm a hypocrite because
I've exploited this game like crazy. It's hard for some
people to resist doing that, since the levelling up process
isn't exactly an engrossing challenge, it's just time
consuming. Some people just need to pad their stats or they
can't play the way they want to play. Hence why so many
thieves are just saying ''fuck it'' and exploiting the
sneaking trick.

Bottom-line, it's an RPG so I should just accept this. I've
played 25 hours, and had tons of fun. BTW, has anyone did
the ''Paranoia'' quest? I want to know some possible
outcomes, I think I fucked up.

Good points again, but like I said, there are certain things
people want to do and certain ways people want to play, but
they can't accomplish that until their stats are built up to
a certain point. And it's just too time consuming for some
people. I experienced a change of heart recently and wanted
to alter my style and be stealthy, but I found I couldn't do
it well because my stats were too low. You just can't ignore
this stuff sometimes and ''go on your merry way''.

My fault for not sneaking enough and choosing the wrong
path? Maybe, but it's still annoying and I'm not looking
forward to building up my sneaking. Not an interesting
challenge.

I do like this system more than a lot of Japanese RPGs where
you just need to kill a lot of cannon fodder, then you'll be
able to beat the boss. And I don't have any bright ideas,
just criticisms.

I guess I was lucky enough to have picked a set of skills
that suit me enough that I don't want to change. I hear what
you're saying about switching skills not being an
interesting challenge. On the bright side, once you have
plenty of money (which you probably already do, it doesnt
take that long), you can always pay trainers to advance your
skills faster. by the way, have you tried taking your boots
off completely when sneaking? even if your sneak skill is
low, it's pretty easy to creep up behind people if you do it
barefoot. Remember to walk, even though its really slow it's
the best way for low levels to remain undetected.
