this is interesting:
"It has been confirmed by producer Todd Howard that the world will be larger than the previous installment in the series: The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind.
For comparison, the total above-ground area of Morrowind's game world was roughly 10 square miles, but the actual landmass was only around 6 square miles and then surrounded by water; not including either of the expansions.
With Oblivion, the above-ground areas are approximately 16 square miles, considerably less water coverage; plus more than 200 underground dungeon areas and the realm of Oblivion.
"The realm of Oblivion" in lore is described as infinite; in game terms, you'll be exploring large randomly generated sections of extra-dimensional terrain every time you enter a portal and leave the normal world behind you. This is similar to the random dungeon generation of The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall
There have been no official size estimates for the playable sections of "the realm of Oblivion".
Neither Morrowind or Oblivion has come close to the massive world as it existed in Daggerfall, estimated as being roughly twice the size of Great Britain, with over 15,000 towns, cities, villages, and dungeons. Instead Oblivion aims to bring more life and detail to the world, and not just massive size."

daggerfall was largest because of all the randomly generated dungeons? not really a fair comparison, is it? :)

16 sq miles AND 200 dungeons... its all a guy who wishes he lived in a fantastical medieval world could ever want. :D

well, i don't see why not. it's a big release, so perhaps they'll stick a few improvements in. of course it's possible that ati don't need to optimise anything, and nv are catching up, but i don't know. if there's any brand affiliation like doom3/nv and hl2/ati, then it's kept pretty low-key.
won't able to tell until benchmarks are carried out, which are rather slim on the ground at the moment.

Got mine a couple hours ago and just finished trying it out. So far, it has surpassed my expectations, though that only consisted of actually running on my 4 year old machine - I didn't expect it to even start. It runs in 640x480 with all effects turned off, and in the intro dungeon, it runs quite smoothly (though it looks how you'd expect). Once I stepped out into the world though I was greeted with a choppy framerate and ugly smooth-looking landscape which looked nothing like the the lush preview videos, and that's when I quit. I don't want to spoil the experience playing on a weak PC, so it's time for me to upgrade. I have to comment though on the physics of the arrows - that was easily my favourite part of what I played. Just the way the objects react when shot, arrows sticking into soft objects and bouncing off hard ones... dead enemies being pushed across the floor by a hail of arrows just to make sure they're completely dead... though I did try a little William Tell thing with an apple, and was saddened to find the apple hard and indestructable, but oh well...
There really wasn't anything at all bad about what I played so far. The inventory seems like the most awkward part - I think I prefer the one in Morrowind over this one, but I'm sure it's easy to get used to.
Also, I got the PC Collectors Edition, and have to say that everything about it is really nice quality. It's little and heavy for it's size, and it's about the same design as the Lord of the Rings Extended Edition DVDs, and the little guide that comes with it is really above most game every game document I've owned, in terms of design and typography (except the silver covered manual for Homeworld).
Oh, and the coin was definitely worth it.

Question for all Elder Scrollers... are you going to be good or evil? Or other? Whenever I play these open-ended games where I have the option to help or harm, I always end up trying to be a hero. It just feels more rewarding, or something. Being evil feels like a cop-out to me. I like to go on kill-a-thons and rapefests every once in a while, but I don't save.

For the most part, I usually play as the stereotypical hero trying to save the day/girl/world, but for Oblivion I'm currently playing as a dark elf custom-class that is basically the assassin class but modified to my liking, so that I can use armors, blades, and bows efficiently, as well as being able to sneak and lockpick. So basically I'm going for a more neutral/evil character this time around, and I plan on being a theiving little bastard. >;)

oh, and I'm running the game on 1024x768 on 2x AA, and the game looks great and runs pretty smooth for the most part, accept when mages cast spells really close to me, the game slows down to a crawl if I dont look away... its pretty crippling to the gameplay but the bright side is that until either the game is patched to fix the problem, or I upgrade my computer (if my computer is at fault), I've been able to snipe most mages from a distance before they can get up close and cast a spell. (spells cast by mages from greater distances dont slow the game down at all, but rather its the ones at point blank that cause the problem).
