Has anyone done the missing/stolen painting side-quest in Chorrol (I think) yet? Where is the next clue after you find the painting tools is Chanel's room?

How many places have you guys found so far? I'm at 308. I think I've uncovered 99% of them, though, just searching for the last stragglers at this point. I've been close to finishing the main quests for last 5 days, and have been doing side quests and guild jobs and stuff. Oh and my house in Cheydinhall is looking pimp, and I'm still working on my house in Skingrad, though it's pretty bare because I spent most of my money on it.

oh, and has anyone downloaded/purchased the new horse armor module yet? I think it's kinda ridiculous that you even have to pay for them, but 2 dollars isn't a large percentage of my income. Maybe this is just the next evolution of expansion packs? God I hope not.

unless of course it becomes cheaper for the consumer to buy expansion modules for games separately rather than paying up front for a bunch of new gameplay changes, some of which the player may not even want.
So for this 1st one, you pay $1 per armor. does that sound worth it? I guess.

yeah, sadly the only thing I use horses for are to ride about un-explored areas of the map faster to uncover new dungeons/camps/etc. I also have the fastest horse in the game, so you definately do not run faster than my horse. :D
basically, I use fast travel for literally everything else, even making my way around towns (why walk to east gate when you can fast-travel there?). I try not to abuse the fast travel though because I feel it makes the gameplay feel too punctuated, like loading new levels does. I don't think oblivion was meant to be played that way, but you know people would have bitched and moaned incessantly if they didn't put a feature like that in the game. I think it would be better if you could only fast travel to towns, but then again if you can fast travel to one place, logically you should be able to travel to all of them in the same fashion.

I've set out playing oblivion with a mindset that allows me to experience all aspects of the game, whether they be good, evil or neutral. In spite of that fact, becoming a vampire is the one thing I have not done yet, so once I've exhausted everything else I'm sure I'll try it. Besides, my character's a dark elf, he's got bright red eyes already so why not become a vampire? He's already half way there. :D

can I be both arch mage of the mages guild (which I already am), whateverthetitleoftheheadofthefightersguildis and on top of the thieves guild if that is even possible? and those assassins... can I advance in their ranks at all? I haven't done their initiation quest yet... what other factions are there? Me and my friends expectations were very high for this game, perhaps too high. I haven't played it yet but this is what he had to say about it.
(I'm 'zeal' and he's 'flesh to spare')
flesh to spare says: oblivion was mediocre. makes me shick zeal says: fuck, whats wrong with oblivion flesh to spare says: they didnt make much changes at all since the elder scrolls for xbox
flesh to spare says: only big difference is the attacking and ragdoll zeal says: what about the AI and environments? flesh to spare says: and though the attacking is way more improved, its still not even up to par with what condemned had to offer
flesh to spare says: it should have at least been that flesh to spare says: the ai was filth flesh to spare says: retarded zeal says: even after all they said about it flesh to spare says: lets say i commited a crime in some town and ran away from some gaurds after resisting arrest. then i teleport to some other town way over on the opposite end of the map.. well suddenly the gaurds in this other city know exactly who i am and try to chase me down
flesh to spare says: theres so many unrealistic stupid things like that zeal says: lol, news doesnt travel that fast in such a fantasy medievil time
zeal says: what happens if you're arrested? do they try to kill you or just lock you up in a prison
flesh to spare says: news should travel dynamically, and there should be ways to avoid suspection such as wearing different clothing
flesh to spare says: you can resist arrest, pay gold or go to jail. zeal says: is there really bad lagging? flesh to spare says: there was, but it might have been the disc. it seemed scratched. but i'm sure there would have been some lag anyways
flesh to spare says: the loading was massive, but i guess thats understandable zeal says: are the environments awesome looking? flesh to spare says: and the enemies are fucking stupid. you can hop onto platforms and enemies unable to reach you will

flesh to spare says: and the enemies are fucking stupid. you can hop onto platforms and enemies unable to reach you will just continue to walk against the platform hopelessly trying to slash you
flesh to spare says: from there you can just exploit them like nothing flesh to spare says: they cant even climb or jump flesh to spare says: and they overexaggereted so much about ai having dynamic task activity involved in their daily routines. wow, they just stand around, walk, sit, pretend to eat and drink and go to bed
flesh to spare says: tahts pretty much it for everybody flesh to spare says: it gets old so quick, and the game feels dead zeal says: feck zeal says: what about the environ flesh to spare says: it was nice, but even with that there was horrendous things which ruined it
flesh to spare says: you could run up and down mountains flesh to spare says: there was absolutely no sense of footing or weight flesh to spare says: it was glitchy crap flesh to spare says: and unlike metal gear solid, you couldnt even move bushes and stuff with your body
zeal says: holy shit thats crap flesh to spare says: the dungeons were repetetive as hell zeal says: how long you been playing it? flesh to spare says: there were maybe a few variety, hardly distinguishable, and just felt like diablo with its random generation of different room sizes and stuff
flesh to spare says: and oblivion didnt even have any deep customization or skills or anything
flesh to spare says: it was such basic shite flesh to spare says: it felt like baldurs gate in that sense that trying to max out your guy because meaningless in the end
flesh to spare says: there was no need for tons of spells in the game flesh to spare says: the characters in the town dont even travel across the map. they dont do much of anything. the most they do that makes them seem fresh is bring up some new topic so that you can activate a quest or something
flesh to spare says: they still have

I would say saying your "expectations were too high" is an understatement.
it is just a computergame, there's only so much you can do at this moment in time.
like Ophecks said before - the amount of variety in the game is very, very broad, which does mean that not every aspect will go as deep and be as well executed.

it is just a computergame, there's only so much you can do at this moment in time.
thats no excuse for the problems in the AI, like the way all guards are like members of the borg collective.
flesh to spare says: and its funny, when gaurds try to approach you to prompt the options you have for the crimes youve done, instead of resisting arrest to begin the fight, you can just run around and they'll just keep following you stupidly allowing themselves to be vulnerable while you kill them with your bow

yeah, but I seem to remember from morrowind certain guild quests involved killing other people from other guilds, which = being expelled from the guild (which, in itself, seems to be a sidequest)...
I remember a quest that involved killing myself (by title, as I'd surpassed the other character, but the name was still that other characers.. auto-completed quest!)

Yeah, I'd say my biggest disappointment with Oblivion is the AI. In fact, there is almost no AI, but just enough to make the game progress. All enemies either see you or they dont, based on your sneak skill (if sneaking) and how fast you are moving. Once they see you, there is absolutely nothing to differentiate any of the enemies from one another in way of their tactics. Archers/Mages and ranged-attacking monsters attack you from a distance, and soldiers and melee-attacking monsters/animals run right up to you haphazardly trying to clubber you. Never once in the game do they do any kind of coordinated attack or change their tactics, like one might expect from an INTELLIGENT being. Aside from that, as Gwely pointed out, the way your "infamy" preceeds you every where you go is just ridiculous. Especially when you kill someone in a secluded area while no one else is watching, just to see a message appear at the top of the screen that "your killing has been recorded by forces unseen." It's just lame and makes the game feel too much like morrowind.

this game is too good; it's huge, surprisingly detailed, and the pure exploration can mean many tens (hundreds?) of possible playing hours. i've had to stop myself playing it otherwise i'm not going to get anything done, ever.
i will agree on the ai being a bit crap though, it's certainly one part of the game that lets things down.

there's a bunch of optimisations you can do - it runs like shit by default, even on very high end machines.
some kind soul has even made up ini files which you just throw in with suggested stuff already done.
on this particular machine i'm using at the moment (xp 3500+, ati x850), it made a _massive_ difference - the game to me both looks nicer and my framerates are insanely better.
