XLTRONIC VIBES #14 | FUNK

I think it comes down to how defined a Vibes concept is -
this one is pretty well defined, which narrows down the
amount of people that will be willing to enter.

when I did the classical Vibes I tried to keep it as open as
possible - mainly because I personally would like it a lot
more that way, as little restrictions as possible, more a
nudge into the right direction, trusting in me as a
music-maker to make something interesting out of it.

it comes down to personal taste, ofcourse.

true...

when i saw "funk," i thought james brown, parliament, etc,
but then the description of the style was not funk at all,
but mildly funky downtempo instrumental hip hop stuff.

indeed, the classical compilation succeeded admirably
despite the fact that almost none of the tracks were
classical, strictly speaking.

i don't mean to be negative, and i'm looking forward to
hearing the results, i just seemed to note a lack of
momentum in this particular vibes...

i'm sure you've got at least one friendly downtempo track in
you qrter...

Well, I see what you're saying, but as we're on an
electronic music board I'd say it was fairly obvious that
I'm not going to ask for people to go out, rent a studio,
find a singer and produce a James Brown-esque funk track but
am, in fact, asking for downtempo funky electronic music.
And the term "funk" is used to describe a certain "feeling"
in all kinds of genres nowadays.

You're right, there has been a lack of momentum on this
vibes..... but it's not THAT bad. I've got quite a lot of
tracks now. Just a few more and I should be able to finish
it.

I think the reason that there hasn't been more interest is
that the majority of people on this board just don't make
this particular type of music. It's not really very "IDM",
which is I suppose what most people make. That's partly the
reason I chose to do it - I thought it would make an
interesting diversion from the norm and show the breadth of
talent present on here.

Anyway, all is not lost. I have a lot of good tracks now. If
I could just get a few more, I'll be very happy.

none of what i said was meant as criticism, i'm well aware
of the use of the word "funk." i'm just saying what
immediately came to mind when i first saw "funk" vibes.

you're right in that this vibes represents a style that is
not as popular as some others around xltronic.

i wasn't announcing the death knell of this vibes, just
making an observation...

i'm still looking forward to hearing it.

Just for conversation sake, i think that this could have
been done with any style given the fact that people could
have done some sampling and cut ups of various funk material
and added their own distinct style.

Either way i look forward to see how this one turns out!

over-sensitive.

On Friday night I DJ'ed in Vilnius and played quite a lot of
the tracks people have contributed to this....... it was
fun!

Anyone who still has a track to finish, please hurry up and
submit it within the next 7 days..... I'm looking to finish
this off very soon.

really been that many contributions to this particular

If you haven't finished it by the time I manage to get
something worthwhile I'll pop it your way :)

wouldn't it have been a good idea to ask the unknowns which
track they made? why not give people credit for the track
they submitted? my track had my name in the filename, as
well...

I only noticed this thread when it came unpinned. I always
assume pinned threads are weather related, disclaim
responsibility for lost and stolen items etc.

Vibes 14:

Sorry for the huge delay - I've had a lot going on in recent
months....

It hasn't ended up being *that* funky, but the quality of
most of the music I received was, frankly, fantastic. I hope
people will enjoy listening to the finished mix as much as I
enjoyed listening to the individual tracks (some of which
I've even been playing live when DJing in Vilnius).

It's shorter than a lot of Vibes, but that's sort of how I
expected it to be, what with the tempo restrictions and
everything and the fact that I'm not a very well-known or
popular XLT "personality". Plus, I don't think a concise
vibes is necessarily a bad thing.

Thanks to Phobia for his patience and encouragement, and to
all who contributed.

If you like my Vibes, then obviously you should download the
other 13 XLtronic Vibes too. If you already have them, you
might like to check out my site here. More mixes
and opportunities to contribute.
