I can't friggin' wait, man. I really hope the scope of the
game is as special as it looks. I want to wander through
vast forests, not be led down artificial paths. Some of the
graphics are pretty good but I think it's looked less and
less impressive as time has progressed. Not a big deal, the
scope is the key. Morrowind didn't look so hot but the world
was really immersive.

There's a lot of great games coming out soon that I have to
get. Ghost Recon- Advanced Warfighter, Oblivion, Metal Gear
Solid 3- Subsistence... there's more but I can only afford
those three for now.

i really can't get bored checking more and more cool plugins
for Morrowind that were created so far....but i promised
myself to upgrade my oldie PC just for the mighty Oblivion.
Just to see how all those neverending forests / "amazing
new" AI possibilities work.

I'm definitely buying the PC Collectors Edition of this,
even though I won't be able to play it. Hopefully, sometime
soon, prices of hardware will drop enough for me to be able
to afford to upgrade/build a new computer.

i'm hoping that if my pc can run hl2:lost coast, then
oblivion ought to be alright. no 8xaa or anything though...

only a few days now (unless you're in america, in which case
tomorrow). anyone been checking the countdown vids? the last
showcases the facial animation, which is pretty good (nice
moving eyes). the characters still look rather bizarre
though, and some better than others (the guy that looks like
lenny kravitz is pretty goodm as is the priest).

even though my computer isn't exactly top notch by todays
standards, I was able to play half life 2 at 1024x768 (not
great resolution but good enough for me) with all the
graphics turned all the way up, with no lag whatsoever,
since my video card is pretty good. I can only hope that
oblivion will be optimized as well as HL2 was. I pre-ordered
the standard game, since the guy at the store had no idea
what the difference between that and the collectors edition
was going to be.

ah! you're right!

dang. even more quiet waiting to do.

although the place I preordered it at has a tendency to send
stuff a few days too early - they sent F.E.A.R. about 3 days
before it was officially released, so here's hoping..

Hey, has anyone taken a look at the different armor types
available? They all look pretty ridiculously cool, but the
Orc armor especially looks great.. It's samurai style armor
and I'm dying to get that on my character. Has anyone heard
if armor is race specific, e.g. only orcs can wear orc
armor? I'd rather not have to make an orc just so I can wear
their armor, but I might have to make an exception because
it looks so damn cool.

HL2 was optimised pretty incredibly though - it runs
smoothly on machines that other same generation games hardly
come to a crawl on.

I've been really impressed by how well it runs on poor
configurations.

yeah, thats true, but Oblivion is using the Source engine
(as you know) so it seems like half the work was already
done for them, right? Source is such a great engine that I
have a feeling I'll still be able to run Oblivion reasonably
well even if it isn't optimized to the calibre of HL2.

by the way, the requirements for the PC version are listed
already, correct? I'm having trouble finding them on their
website.

ok so I found the requirements, and my computer meets all
the recommended reqs except for 3ghz P4 (i have a 2.4 which
I can safely overclock to 2.8ghz).. but it says I need an 8x
dvd-rom drive... Well I specifically asked the guy at the
store if I could pre-order a CD version since I dont have a
dvd rom drive, and he said yes. So it better be coming in 2
different versions.

oblivion is using the source engine? i don't think so - not
unless it's heavily customised. the water looks rather
different to hl2 for a start (unfortunately, as HL2 water
looks amazing).

Points: 130 Status: Lurker | Followup to Zephyr Twin: #01863257

what about hl2:lost coast? i can imagine oblivion having to
work much harder than this to look as good, as you're free
to roam anywhere, unlike hl2 where you're guided very
linearly (and thus the graphics detail focuses only on the
important bits).

just thinking about the story is getting me excited...
morrowind sucked me right in.

yeah, i'm amazed at how smooth hl2 is, given how good it
looks. morrowind occasionally ran like a dog in open city
areas, even on modern hardware. god knows how it ran on 3dfx
cards and the like...

I think in the case of HL2 a lot of how good it looks comes
down to the artistic design of the game - simply how it's
drawn, the clearness of it all.

it doesn't try to look realistic as in: coming close to
reality, but keeps some form of abstracted style, so it's
more like a really well drawn animation or even an animated
graphic novel.

although the water (for example) does look amazing, which
does ofcourse come down to technical frippery.

you make a good point - HL2 is extremely linear, but yes,
Oblivion is using the Source engine, and yes it has been
modified. You're forgetting, however, that even though
Oblivion is extremely open ended, that doesn't mean you're
going to be seeing the whole world in it's entirety at any
given moment. You're only going to see as much as you could
in HL2 at one time. This gives the game (and your computer)
time to begin pre-loading approaching sections of the game
before you can see them, so that the world appears seamless,
when in fact it's being loaded in chunks just like any other
game.

Daggerfall was great, despite it's bugs, but Morrowind
really sucked despite looking better, so I'm hoping this one
will be more like Daggerfall, only without the bugs.

but after further investigation, it appears we were
both wrong.
