i do that. that's how you win, man.

what really pisses me off is when you are there in the last
minute, but someone else times it even better than you, in
the last last minute :P

There is a program called auction sniper, it bids in the
last seconds ...

Ebay is alright , it's PayPal who are the real fuckers.....

Yeah $45 for a blow up Britney doll with 'real hair' was
pretty cheap...but I wouldn't have gone over $50 so you were
just unlucky.

win an auction

Yeah, they have proxy bidding,
so you can put in the MAXIMUM you are williing to pay, and
it will put in for you just the minimum you need to beat the
other people, up until they outbid your maximum bid.

So if you put a $10 bid, and someone else bids for $1, and
the bid increment is 50 cents, you will be listed as being
the highest bidder with $1.50, and if nobody bids higher,
you get it for 1.50.

haha well yes i am -- no offense, but the high bid wins, so
there you have it. if you want something you have to have
the high bid.

yes, but when someone bids at the very last minute... it
doest give me time to rebid.

ill have to use that autobid funtion next time... (this is
my first time on ebay)

but dammit. It was a nord 2 rack synth, for 380 bucks. Thats
what I put, and then they put 400. didnt have time to up it

:(

Well if you were willing to pay over $400, you should have
bid $400 initially...

Maybe you don't understand...

yes, but thats what proxy-bidding does.

it only bids what is needed to go over the other bidders -
up to the amount you specified.

so if the amount specified isn't ridiculous, you'd still get
it for a good price.

offline mappatazee from ¨y¨z¨| (Burkina Faso) on 2003-10-14 18:00 [#00902308]
Points: 14294 Status: Lurker

Okay, I'll try another example:

The item starts at $200 with an increment of $10/bid. You
put in a bid of $1000, because that's all you can afford.
Ebay gives a proxy bid of $200. So the item is yours for
$200, if nobody else bids.
But someone bids $300, then Ebay bids for you$310.
It will do this up to $1000. So somebody bids $1100? If
you had maybe instead of $1000, decided that at most, you
would pay $1200, then it would put in $1110 for you. It
will always put in a bid as cheap as possible for you.

I've always thought last minute bidding was cheap and a bit
unfair. And I know how the damn thing works. :)

I put in a succesful bid manually the other day, when I saw

I never put in the max bid until right at the end because...
well, 99% of the time, you win.

bidding in the last minute works almost always profitable. I
don't think it's cheap, it's just the way how it works. It's
indeed just about the maximum you are willing to pay. And
the highest bidder wins, that's the whole 'all'.

I think me and Zeus are both fully aware that there's
nothing technically wrong about the practice.. it's the idea
that some people deliberately wait so that they can slip in
a bid, regardless of the amount of time another bid has been
in place. Why can't they just play fair and bid when they
see the item they want? Again.. nothing technicaly wrong.
It just causes a lot of heartache on the other end, and I've
tried to avoid this practice because I know how bad it makes
me feel when I'm the recipient of this kind of action.

the auction isn't about time, it's just about the highest
bidder. If you're afraid of those who bid in the last
minute, your bid wasn't actually your highest bid. And why
is that? Probably the same reason why other people bid in
the last minute. (to save money)

I used to think that last minute bidding was unfair but it's
really not. It's exactly like a real auction with people
bidding at the last minute. It's not a bad thing really it's
just an annoyance.

Basically it rolls down to this:

If you're bidding early then put in the absolute maximum
you're willing to pay, don't think "Well if I put $50 for
now and maybe go to $100 if it goes above it. Stake your
amount from the off. If you lose then you lose. You've saved
yourself some money and you may pick it up cheaper in
another auction.

Be prepared to lose by whatever the minimum you could be
outbid by is. If it's 50cents then it's 50 cents. Think of
it as a way to save money.

Thing with that is, if you put in your max right from the
start it spurs other people into action. Most of the stuff I
bid on is pretty obscure and doesn't appeal to many people.
I might put in an opening bid, or if there's just a couple
of bids, to gague how much I might have to pay. If I get
automatically outbid straight away I wait right till the
end, then put in my max, because it gives nobody else a
chance to up their bid. It is kind of sneaky, but I've won
11 auctions this way :)

offline nacmat on 2003-10-15 05:04 [#00902642]
Points: 31271 Status: Lurker | Followup to Jarworski: #00902639

I ve won like 20 auctions that way too.

I never bid till the last 5 minutes
then as I dont want to go all crazy outbidding till the last
second, I just put my maximum bid... if I win great! if not,
no problem, thats life.

but if you bid before that (couple of days before ending
bid) then you just make other people bid, and it gets much
more expensive.

If you don't want to be outbid at the last minute, don't bid
early.
Do people SERIOUSLY think that if they bid three days in
advance nobody's going to outbid them?
And if you'd managed to outbid them, Zeus, then YOU would
have bid at the last minute, and be just as bad as they.

What I don't understand is when there is an item with a
reserve price. A few weeks ago I bidded on one of the UI's.
My max bid was pretty high, but the "current bid" did not
reach the reserve price. So because there was no high
bidding from the other person, the reserve price was never
reaced, although my max bid maybe was "up there". THAT is a
lame thing about e-bay.

When the reserve price hasn't been reached yet you can place
a direct bid without needing this other person to bid
higher.
